Holy shit, look at these videos of trucks crashing into the same bridge, over & over & over http://11foot8.com

It amazed my the number of trucks that also ran the red light, in addition to hitting the bridge.

We have a low clearance overpass near my work, and every couple of weeks, we hear the unmistakeable sound of a giant can being ripped open (it's often a rental truck).

Those are even more gruesome, that CAT tore right thru the overpass, how fast were they going to do that. I thought bridges were built to take certain blows.

The 8'10" trucks are actually hitting the sacrificial beam, not the bridge itself, but otherwise you can't take your eyes off of it.

The 11'8" bridge is near the apartment where I lived for three years during law school, but it seems like there were far fewer truck crashes then. Maybe we just weren't as aware of them because we didn't have a 24/7 webcam documenting them.

"That sounded stupid, didn't it?"

They mostly hit the lower protective beam as someone said above ^^, but I don't understand how people are missing the sign that lights up, when a vehicle is to high. But the funniest one to me is where the truck makes it, but the beam slices the top right of like a can. Never knew that could happen like that.

Either (a) they're REALLY zoned out or (b) they think they can just barely make it and they can't be bothered to take a detour just to be on the safe side.

Why the hell, would that truck, be speeding & think it could do that, I wonder what pedestrians think, when they see a truck plow into a bridge & almost kill everyone. & HAPPY THANKSGIVING.

I know we've discussed these low bridges before on another thread, but I still don't understand how this happens.  If the clearance is this low, the road should be restricted to "passenger cars only" - no trucks or buses of any kind on a road like this.

What do you mean by "this low"? 15' u-haul truck is 9'11", and would comfortably feet under 10'8" bridge, for example.
You cannot ban traffic just-in-case, that is why clearance signs exist. One may wonder why those are not read and understood, though.

Tonytone

Maybe that glowing, "Over-height"  vehicle sign should be bigger & a different color, because the trucks run the light & miss that sign. & do they not have red light cameras around that part?

They discuss this in the FAQs on the website. Trucks utilize the cross street immediately before the bridge to make deliveries to businesses along that street.

ErmineNotyours

Either put in a crossing gate that is activated by an overheight truck, or people should obey the freakin' red light.

Yes, yes it is. If a fire truck hits a bridge, does this mean the bridge needs to be re-examined?

I believe it does.  These are serious safety hazards.  It is a good argument for closing the road altogether, if not restricting it to card only.
