Quote from: wildcat7176 on October 13, 2024, 09:18:06 PMWhile reading about the recent improvements to 422 near King of Prussia, a couple of things caught my eye:

2. The DVRPC site details about the future plans for the 422/23 interchange. A few years ago, they redid the 422 east exit ramp to PA 23 to make it a flyover ramp, which I found very strange. My guess is because Valley Forge Park, which is directly next to the exit, wanted the ramp to be farther away from the park borders, as I recall Valley Forge Park opposed a new Betzwood Bridge all those years ago. It turns out the DVRPC plan seeks to shift Gulph Road about 500 feet east of the park to construct a new park entrance area. But by shifting the road, it requires the removal of the 23 to 422 east entrance ramp. Does this mean they are going to make drivers on 23 head south to the First Ave. entrance ramp to get on 422 east? Seems strange to me to do all this and deliberately make the interchange incomplete.
(DVRPC Project Info)

Yes.  First Avenue will be he new eastbound access point for PA23 traffic.  "422 River Crossing" is the googlefriendly nickname for the project area if you didn't know that already.
Here is a PDF on Penndot's site showing the completed look of the river crossing project:

(For PA 611)  PennDOT - District 5 News: Route 611 is Open in Monroe County

QuoteMotorists are advised that the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today Route 611/North Delaware Drive in Delaware Water Gap Borough and Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, Monroe County, is open.

"PennDOT thanks the National Park Service, Federal Highway Administration, federal, state, and local elected officials, and the multiple tribal nations who were involved in getting this road back open," said PennDOT District 5 Executive Chris Kufro. "We especially thank the residents and business owners in the area for their patience."

Route 611 is open in a single lane condition controlled with traffic signals. Motorists are advised to only proceed through the area on a green signal. Motorists are also reminded vehicles over 8 feet wide are prohibited on Route 611 between the Portland-Columbia Toll Bridge in Portland Borough, Northampton County and Broad Street in Delaware Water Gap Borough, Monroe County.

"Once the design and permitting was complete, our contractor J.D. Eckman did a great job to quickly perform the work and get the road open," Kufro added.

J.D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, PA began moving barrier and other safety equipment into the area on August 14, 2024.

Work included roadway grading and realignment, constructing a concrete slab, installing free-standing metal posts, concrete barriers, and protective chain-link fencing.

The road will not be fully open (two lanes open, one lane in each direction, with no traffic signals) until a more permanent solution is determined. Currently there is no estimated timeline for when it will be fully open.

Route 611 was closed on December 6, 2022, due to a rockslide and slope failure caused by heavy rains. The road was closed between Cherry Valley Road/Oak Street and Slateford Road. During the closure traffic was detoured on PA 512, PA 33, US 209, Interstate 80, and Business Route 209.

Motorists can check conditions on major roadways by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras. 511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following local alerts on X.

A bus filled with tourists (one of whom was me, getting my first look at the project [completed or otherwise]) negotiated that circle twice today, going to Lancaster and heading back home.  That roundabout looks like a beaut.  Thanks, PennDOT.  And thanks for the link, 74.

Looks like they believe it will be like this for quite some time with them installing a metal mast arm for the lights.

Correct me, but per Google Maps/Google Sat, that stretch from Broad St. in DWG to the Portland-Columbia Bridge is about 6 miles long (my estimate).  I wonder how long a wait at the stop lights/how long the lines motorists can expect with that long a single lane?  The press release doesn't seem to answer that question.  I guess EZPasses will still be getting an excess workout in that neck of the woods.  Can't wait for the Google Street View van to go through there again (unless it's too wide).

Looking at GM with the traffic layer on (and using the red marks as the stopping points), the total single lane is about 2,800 feet.

QuoteDunmore, PA – PennDOT has opened the Route 435 "flyover" bridge leading from Interstate 84 from Dunmore to Roaring Brook in Lackawanna County this afternoon, after 11 months of construction as part of the Twin Bridges project.

Through this project, two bridges are being replaced and a right-hand exit to Route 435 southbound was created via a "flyover" structure spanning both directions of I-84. Changing the previous left-hand exit to a right-hand exit makes the experience standardized and predictable for drivers, while allowing smoother transitions and merging.

Additional work includes roadway reconstruction and retaining-wall construction to accommodate Route 435 grade adjustments. In addition, an abandoned railroad bridge previously operated by the Erie & Wyoming Railroad will be rehabilitated for use during construction and for future use in the Lackawanna County Trail Corridor.

I did not know until today that this US 15 study existed:

https://seda-cog.org/wp-content/uploads/US-15-Corridor-Study_FINAL.pdf

This is a case where I would support measures to slow traffic down and discourage trucks and thru traffic from the corridor so they'll start using I-180 instead. It is interesting that the need for better connectivity to I-180 was mentioned, as there are notably no good east-west connections between US 15 and I-180 north of I-80. The lack of a PA 44/I-180 interchange is also notable.

(For PA 82)  PennDOT - District 6 News: Doe Run Road Bridge (Route 82) over Doe Run Closed in West Marlborough Township

QuoteKing of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that the bridge carrying Doe Run Road (Route 82) over Doe Run in West Marlborough Township, Chester County, was closed after a recent inspection determined significant deterioration to the steel beams and deck.

During the closure, Doe Run Road (Route 82) motorists will be directed to use Route 841 (Chatham Road) and Route 842 (Clonmell Upland Road). Local access will be maintained up to the closure.

The two-lane bridge will remain closed until PennDOT bridge engineers can determine the full extent of the damage and develop a plan to repair and reopen the structure.

Built in 1932, the 58-foot-long structure carries approximately 4,881 vehicles per day. The bridge was posted for 15 tons in March 2024.

I remember once seeing an old map of PA showing PA 33 as PA 115.

Being that PA 115, that once went to Easton, was truncated to it's current southern terminus at about the time PA 33 got completed to US 22, I'm assuming it was a valid proposal.

However the part of PA 33 north of Snydersville would have not made sense to have PA 115 be designated there as it would have ended at I-80 orphaning the rest of PA 115 north of US 209 that is current.

So really was PennDOT serious about the current PA 33 being a realignment of former PA 115?
Every day is a winding road, you just got to get used to it.

PennDOT did the same thing on US 40 east of Uniontown about two years ago. There are signs before PA 43 splits warning of the restriction, which goes into effect immediately after the eastern end of the Uniontown bypass. Part of the shoulder along the bypass was widened slightly and is signed as a Chain Up Area: https://maps.app.goo.gl/B2QhNbbLdDmi9JVd7.

The signage for the chain restriction was done on the cheap. They just mounted battery-powered flashers, similar to you see on construction barricades, to the top of the signs for the restrictions.
