I had thought that, after its 1935 truncation, US 73 ended in Kansas City, KS.  But recently on Facebook a 1952 photo was posted, showing the intersection of 6th and Broadway in KCMO.  Eric Lachmiller (not sure if he's on this forum) noticed that there was a Missouri US route shield with the numbers 40-24-73.  So I did a little checking and found the USGS maps from 1957 and 1964 showed US 73 ending on 6th at Oak in KCMO.  That's not always enough to be conclusive, but then I found the Oct. 1983 AASHTO minutes noted approval of a truncation to US 73 from "its present terminous [sic] in Kansas City, Missouri".  Photos, maps, and more details on these pages:

That was a nice find indeed! And I do remember vaguely passing the southern terminus of US 73 when it was in KCMO and I was just a kid looking for adventure.
Go Cubs Go! Go Cubs Go! Hey Chicago, what do you say? The Cubs are gonna win today!

Didn't US 73 once go south of Kansas City, and was divided into 73E and 73W?

I think one of those routes is now US 169 and the other is either US 59 or US 69.

I'd definitely renumber US 59 to US 73 over its entire length (at least north of Houston; the Houston to Laredo section should be US 96) and use US 59 on US 52 and 67 from the Quad Cities to St. Paul.
Main Line Interstates clinched:  2, 4, 5, 8, 10, 11, 12, 14, 16, 17, 19, 20, 24, 25, 26, 27, 29, 30, 37, 39, 43, 44, 45, 55, 57, 59, 65, 68, 71, 72, 74 (IA-IL-IN-OH), 76 (OH-PA-NJ), 78, 80, 82, 86 (ID), 88 (IL)

US 73 original southern terminus was at Interstate 75 in Atoka, Oklahoma. It was replaced by US 69 south of Kansas City, KS on April 10, 1935. On the other end, in my opinion, US 75 should not have replaced US 73 north of Omaha in 1984. I think US 75 should have remained co-designated with Interstate 29. The exit numbers on the Sioux City bypass, the portion solely designated as US 75, have exit numbers that seem to be numbered as if US 75 was still on its pre-1984 alignment.

I have long suspected that 73 once ended in downtown KCMO. I saw a map once that had a US 73 shield in the Missouri part of the map.
