I have been researching the numbering history of the highway between Fort Smith to Mena in Arkansas that goes through Spiro and Poteau in Oklahoma. I am looking for maps of these two states from 1926 through 1930 or 31. I'm specifically looking for maps that show the highway south of Poteau as US 71, US 271 or US 371. Does anybody have any scans? Here is a blog with some of the information about this highway that I have discovered:

1930 Clasons Atlas:

The 1927 Clasons Atlas shows same routing but all as US 271.

Wow, thanks! That's the third map I've seen that shows this road as US 371. When I first saw it on a map, I thought it was a mapo but I've recently seen this map and a map of Lake Wister that showed US 371. Three sources are like smoke: there has to be a reason that US 371 appears on these maps. It was apparently officially proposed by one or more parties. I may bite the bullet and go to Oklahoma City and see if ODOT has a library that is open to the public and do some research.

Mapmikey, do you mind if I use this map on my blog? I will credit it to you however you want me too.

If it was 371 it was very short-lived:

Have you seen the map on page 79 of the 1929 Oklahoma Annual Highway Report?
https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015021036762;view=1up;seq=83;size=200

Appears to show US 271 southwest to Hugo and US 270 over towards Mena AR.

Pg. 169 of the same report has traffic data explicitly showing where segments of US 270 and US 271 are...

The 1925-26 report doesn't mention the US route system and the 1931-32 report is nothing like the 1929-30 version.  The 1927-28 report is not available from the Hathi site https://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/000063283

You are welcome to use the 1930 Clasons scan, courtesy Mapmikey

I have found the 1927-28 Oklahoma Highway Report.

It has a traffic data count and it shows US 271 to be assigned to the road south of Porteau and headed for Heavner and Page.

Go to content segment 62 (scroll on the right side of the viewer) which brings up pg. 113.  There is a single US 271 entry, described as 1 mile south of OK 3.  Oddly, the road north to Porteau and Ft Smith is still represented as OK state routes in this set of traffic data

Incidentally, this on-line repository appears to have all biennial reports 1919-54

This document from the AASHO archives strongly suggests that US 271 was signed in Oklahoma between the state line at Fort Smith to at least the state line east of Page.
