Title: Famous TV character quotes
Post by: roadman65 on February 19, 2019, 06:55:46 PM
Famous TV quotes from any character from any show.  Lead, supporting, or guest.

Dennis Patrick as Vaughn Leland on Dallas, A House Divided (the episode where JR Ewing got shot in 1980) to JR Ewing:  It was crooked!  And I believe you knew that!  You'll regret this!

JR Ewing:  Is that a threat, Vaughn?

Vaughn Leland:  No threat!  A promise.

Out of that particular series, that was the most memorable moment for me out a many.

Gomer Pyle to Barney Fife on Andy Griffith:  (While running down the street) Citizens arrest!  Citizens Arrest!

Edith Bunker to husband Archie on All In The Family:
Edith:  Lets talk.
Archie: We have got nothing to talk about.  (Archie notices his chair is gone) Now, we got something to talk about.

Seinfeld last episode:
Jerry's attorney to Jerry:  They are real and they are spectacular.
(This after Jerry learns his lawyer slept with one of his many ex girlfriends, and it was one where Jerry in his usual skepticsim had problems with her due to her large chest and not knowing if it were real or fake).

As God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly.

Les: "It's a helicopter, and it's coming this way. It's flying something behind it, I can't quite make it out, it's a large banner and it says, uh - Happy... Thaaaaanksss... giving! ... From ... W ... K ... R ... P!! What a sight, ladies and gentlemen, what a sight. The "˜copter seems to be circling the parking area now, I guess it's looking for a place to land. No! Something just came out of the back of the helicopter! It's, uh, a dark object. Perhaps a skydiver. Plummeting to the earth from only two thousand feet in the air. A second, a third! No parachutes yet. Can't be skydivers... I can't tell just yet what they are, but - Oh my God, they're turkeys!! Johnny, can you get this? Oh, they're plunging to the earth right in front of our eyes! One just went through the windshield of a parked car! Oh, this is just terrible! The crowd is running around pushing each other! Oh, my goodness! Oh, the humanity! People are running about! The turkeys are hitting the ground like sacks of wet cement! Honestly, folks I don't know how much longer... the crowd is running for their lives."

Fever: "Les? Les? Les, are you there? Les, isn't there... Thanks for that on-the-spot report, Les. Uh, for those of you who just tuned in, the Pinedale Shopping Mall has just been bombed with live turkeys. Film at eleven."

Game shows have their share of these:

"Door number 1, door number 2, or door number 3" -- Monty Hall, Let's Make a Deal

"Is that your final answer?" -- Regis Philbin, Who Wants to be a Millionaire (early days)

"This is Bob Barker saying, have your pets spayed or neutered."  -- The Price is Right

And on the news:

"And that's the way it is.  (insert date here) I'm Walter Cronkite, this is CBS News, good night."

True.  It's also worth noting that NBC offered Democratic candidate Hubert Humphrey to appear (not necessarily on the same episode as Nixon) on Laugh In but he turned it down.  It was believed that Humphrey thought it was beneath him to appear on that show.

More from the original Star Trek:

"The best diplomat I know is a fully activated phaser bank!" (Scotty)

(From "The Doomsday Machine":

SPOCK: Appropriate, Captain. However, I can't help wondering if there are any more of those weapons wandering around the universe.
KIRK: Well, I certainly hope not. I found one quite sufficient.

Then we have another computer on the fritz that will be "logically" destroyed but not before wiping out the population of a planet and raising Cain on the Enterprise:

NOMAD: You are the creator, the Kirk. The sterilisation procedure against your ship was unnecessary.
KIRK: What sterilisation procedure?
NOMAD: You are the Kirk, the creator. You programmed my function.
MCCOY: Well, I'm not the Kirk. Tell me what your function is.
NOMAD: This is one of your units, creator?
KIRK: Yes, he is.
NOMAD: It functions irrationally.
KIRK: Sometimes, but tell him your function nevertheless.
NOMAD: My function is to probe for biological infestations, to destroy that which is not perfect. I am Nomad.

This series is so loaded with golden dialogue!

More from the original Star Trek:
...
This series is so loaded with golden dialogue!
"Fascinating!" - Mr. Spock

IMHO, the best spin on the above Spock one-liner was in The Trouble with Tribbles episode dialogue between Spock & McCoy.
Note: the below is paraphrased.

McCoy (to Spock): Please, don't tell me that it's fascinating.
Spock: No, but it is... interesting." (McCoy's eyes roll up)

There was some dialogue on one episode where Spock explained the difference between Fascinating and Interesting.

That would be "The Squire of Gothos" :  " 'Fascinating' is a word I reserve for the unexpected. In this case I should think 'interesting' would suffice."

Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead.

Generalissimo, now there is an interesting rank.  During World War II we had Field Marshals, Air Marshals, Grand Admirals and in the US, 5-star admirals and generals.  These were ranks that commanded in one service branch.  Generalissimo was a rank which commanded across the board (army, navy, air force) and there were two of note.  Franco of Spain, which remained neutral although pro-Axis, held the rank and was that nation's leader was one.  The other was Chiang Kai-Shek, leader of the Republic of China, which was on the Allied side.  Despite their geographical distance and being on opposite sides of the Axis vs Allies conflict, they both sprang from political parties called the Nationalists with the Chinese name being also well-known at the time, Kuomintang.

Today in the US military, joint operations and joint commands are prominent but we do not have anyone who holds the rank of generalissimo let alone 5-star general although the definition of generalissimo would apply to those who hold authority over joint commands.

Ralph Kramden of the Honeymooners to Ed Norton:  (Norton fooling around with the pool stick instead of shooting the ball)  Come on!  (Saying it loud and slapping Norton on the back)

Another Honeymooner Scene Ralph to Alice:
Ralph: Is that the reason why you think I won't buy you a TV set cause you think I am cheap?
Alice: Yes
Ralph: Well it so happens that is not the reason why I won't buy you a TV.
Alice: What is the reason?
Ralph: The Reason. You want to know the reason?
Alice: Yes
Ralph: The reason?
(Brief pause as Ralph can't think of another reason)
Ralph: Oh I'll tell you what it is......I'll tell you what it is......The reason is I am waiting for 3D TV.

Ralph again upset at Norton.
Ralph: OUT!
Norton: I take back the job offer I gave you to work in the sewer with me. Besides you wouldn't even fit through the manhole.
Ralph: GET OUT!!!!

Dallas S2 Bobby Ewing exposes JR mortgaging the Southfork Ranch.

Jock angrily to JR:  Why the hell didn't you discuss this with me first?  How the hell did you involve Southfork in this?

That scene is classic as Jock was really pissed at what JR had done.  You did not see Jock pissed at JR much until he secretly mortgaged the family ranch.

Before that was also good when Bobby almost beat the shit out of JR when he refused to talk to him.  Then he grabbed him to shove his face in the record showing he put a lien on Southfork was also great.  I have to say the best seasons were when Jim Davis was alive.  The show went downhill after Davis died, but you cannot have it all.

This is one of those misquotes ("Beam me up, Scotty"  is also one of these) - 1960s TV standards generally avoided any cussing, mild or otherwise. The word "hell"  though did appear in a couple episodes, notably "City on the Edge of Forever" .

The films were much more liberal with cussing, particularly IV where it was a running point of humor.

Actually, Bullwinkle had a different response for every animal that came out of the hat.  For the bear "Wrong hat" (no oops), for the rhino "Ooh, I don't know my own strength", for the tiger "I take a seven and a half", for the lion "I gotta get another hat", and lastly (when he pulls Rocky out of the hat), "Well, I'm getting close."  Rocky's response to this was usually "And now, here's something you'll really like", except when he was pulled out of the hat, when he would say "And now it's time for another special feature."

Also, there were two versions of the "bear from the hat" routine.  One had a red background and ended with Rocky saying "And now it's time to meet Mr. Peabody.", the other was the standard blue background with Rocky making the standard response at the end.

As for other R&B recurring quotes: "It's not the Canadian way" was always uttered at some point during a Dudley DoRight episode.  "I forget how to make a 'B'" or "But how do you make the 'B'" was another one uttered at some point during some Adventures segment.  And let's not forget the  "Now there's something you don't see everyday Chauncy.  What's that Edgar?" dialogue that would show up at random and unexpected times during the show.

From Klondike Kat:

- Klondike Kat always gets his mouse.

In one particular episode, a reply from his boss Major Minor following the previous quote
- And sometimes, he gets his Major.

From Tennessee Tuxedo (voiced by Don Adams):

- Tennessee Tuxedo will not fail.

- Phineas J. Whoopee, you're the greatest
(sometimes followed by... thanks a million!)

From Go Go Gophers:

Sergeant Oakey Homa: Begging the Colonel's pardon.

Col. Kit Coyote (following Ruffled Feathers' gibberish): What did he say?

Running Board: Him say....

Same here -- but I was a bit late to that particular party.  Got into it in college (1967-72); and was more often than not consuming brewskies or indulging in what passed for weed in those days (stems & pieces!) -- or both while watching TV -- so my precise memories are probably a bit skewed.  But Ward was indeed ahead of his time, toggling his content between kids and adults with ease (how many 10-year-olds can appreciate the significance of Boris Badenov [cf. Gudenov]?).

However, I have a slightly better recollection of a non-TV humorous comic series of the time: Gilbert Shelton's Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers.  Always surprised no one did an animated feature based on those characters' antics!
