    • Item 193 widens around 6 miles of I-57 south of the southern I-64 interchange
When 57 is fully 6-laned between 24 and 64, I may start using it to head north again. This is another step in that direction!

Until then, IL 127, US 51, IL 13, US 45, and IL 1 are my friends

Looking at the plans, the NB lanes on I-57 will go down from 3 to 2 when approaching the southern I-64 interchange with a wide shoulder on the left (assuming that IDOT has plans to reconstruct the bridges at the southern I-64 interchange to add a third lane NB).[/list]

Typical IDOT, losing the lane prior to the interchange where they could properly drop the lane.  They did this on I-55 southbound one mile before Weber Road, causing backups that went as far as the Ryan some days.  They did this again on I-80 westbound just before US-30 in New Lenox, causing backups that went back to I-355.  They still haven't learned their lesson to maintain the lane far enough to drop it properly.

Quote from: jdunlop on May 23, 2024, 03:20:53 PMAsheville would like to decommission 240, similar to how Durham would like to decommission NC 147 and convert from a freeway to a boulevard.  More likely in the downtown area (26 to the cut); there's work that'll eventually be needed as those bridges reach their life expectancy.

Are there definitive plans for both freeway-to-surface road conversions?  Or is this essentially something planned for after 2040 or so?

(As opposed to the in-progress changes for I-375 in Detroit and parts of I-81 in Syracuse)

Asheville has suggested it, but nothing definitive, and NCDOT has not agreed to go along with it at this point.  I don't think they'll consider it until the I-26 corridor is finished.

I see some merit to the idea, as mentioned specifically in the downtown area where the road/RW is tight.  When it comes time to replace the bridges in that area, the discussion will ramp up.

Not shocked at the lack of "definitive plans", but has the city looked into any potential concepts?

Interesting that PennDOT has such a low speed limit on US 40 WB heading down the long hill into Uniontown.

Plus plenty of these warning signs as well.

Then at the beginning of that long decent, you have a red warning sign informing truckers of the upcoming road conditions.

I'm taking that stretch of US 40 is a dead man's highway hence all of these warnings and such a low speed limit.

10 MPH is almost impossible to maintain down that hill. In fact, I've had to engine brake an SUV because of the speed it kept picking up.

After five years, and yet, when I see a map like this...

I'm still trying to figure out if I'm in the Red area or the Green area. It would help if there were county lines on those maps, as I can easily locate from that point. As it is, I'm trying to figure out if I'm in the light green or red zone.

That. NDOT generally sees little use in signing redundant designations if there is a local name already in use because that a) costs more money and b) creates the potential for confusion. In the case of urban arterials, nobody uses the number, so why create more sign clutter along congested urban freeways? The best you'll get is a few standalone shields, which are generally present apart from the shortest routes.

And again, this differs significantly by NDOT district. 1 and 2 are much less likely to post numbers than 3, though all have at least 1 route that isn't acknowledged along a freeway despite being signed on the surface. But since 3 is mostly (all, if you don't count Elko) rural, people will use numbers because there is no name.

The only time I've been pulled over for speeding in general was in 2015.  I dusted someone in my Challenger that was holding up a line of cars in Hernando County, Florida.  I probably got up to 15 MPH over for a couple seconds.  I was given a minor verbal warning and was on my way shortly after.

Suffice to say I got away with a lot more speeding in Arizona.  My top speed during my time there was 134 MPH on an empty stretch of I-10 during a car cruise.
