I'll keep track with a leaderboard here. Counts will include DC.

1 - Illinois (45)

This is very impressive, but also not surprising, considering the number of key routes that have to bend down here to get around the Great Lakes.

The reason I chose Illinois for the county thread was because I knew it had the state record (although it might have tied; I can't remember).

The thing about Illinois is that of the top three cities in the US outside Illinois (New York City, Los Angeles, and Houston), Illinois routes hit none of them.

It used to serve one of them with two routes in the past (LA with US 6 and US 66), but not anymore

If we're counting the top 3 metro areas outside Illinois (NYC, LA, Dallas), Illinois gets 2 of the 3 (3/3 with US 66), with I-80 to NYC, US 67 to Dallas.

One only needs to bring back US 66 and extend I-80 a few miles and you've got the two biggest taken care of.

I'd be interested to see the total for DC itself.
I-95: FL, GA, SC, NC, VA, MD, DE, PA, NJ, NY, CT, RI, MA, NH, ME (15)
US 50: CA, NV, UT, CO, KS, MO, IL, IN, OH, WV (25)

If you're nitpicky that I-95's couple hundred feet in DC doesn't count, US 1 goes through all of I-95's states except Delaware, so that total will be 25.

Also, leaderboard update

Closest is Colorado actually. I was surprised that there's no routes from Colorado to the Pacific NW states with how close they are geographically. From the NW corner of Colorado to SE corner of Idaho, it's a straight line distance of 125 miles.
