Title: Road Trips You Want To Go On At Least Once In Your Life

I'm going start by making a list of road trips I want to go on. If you want, just list trips you would like to make as well.

1) Terre Haute, IN - Muskogee, OK - Mazatlan, SIN (MEX).
2) Terre Haute, IN - Toronto, ON - Sudbury, ON - Terre Haute, IN
3) Terre Haute, IN - Montreal, QC
4) Lisbon, Portugal - Barcelona, Spain - Paris, France, - Warsaw, Poland
5) Brisbane, Australia- Perth, Australia
6) Drive around Botswana on A1, A2, and A3
7) Drive Chilean Route 5 from Santiago to northern Chile.
8) Terre Haute, IN - Anchorage, AK
9) Haifa, Israel - Tel Aviv, Israel - Jerusalem, Israel
10) Snowmobile in Antarctica  :-D

In no particular order:

1)  NC 12
2)  US 1 to Key West
3)  Los Angeles freeway system
4)  Pacific Coast Highway
5)  I-70 west of Denver
6)  Amtrak's California Zephyr (not a "road" trip per se, though railroads are a type of "road")
7)  Amtrak's Empire Builder

1) I have a 3 week loop planned from Croatia to Germany to Romania to Bosnia to Croatia I have wanted to take for a while, just need the resources
2) Dempster Highway
3) Montana to Quebec, hoping to do that next year maybe in conjunction with the UP meet.
4) Trans-Laborador and Newfoundland
5) Paris to Istanbul
6) Clinch US 1, 6, and 62

I have so little flexibility to just take off anymore, but I really want to drive up to James Bay.  It would somehow tie the world together a little more for me.

Planned near term:
- UK/London. Drive all over for one week, ride trains all over for another.
- cross country, northern tier - visiting the remainder of the lower 48 I have not been to

Planned longer term:
- cross country through Canada from Ontario west, then to Alaska
- Canadian maritimes/Labrador

Pipe dreams, may or may not happen someday:
- Japan
- Australia
- Italy

I just did this recently...great place to visit.  If you like bridges and tunnels, this place is for you.  If you want a tunnel all to yourself, drive the Wabash.

In no particular order:

–The Overseas Highway to Key West
–The Hana Highway (and the continuation around the south side)
–The entire Kahekili Highway (especially the super-narrow windy part)
–The Alaska Highway
–The Saddle Road and the Waipio Valley Road
–The Eyre Highway in Australia
–The Guoliang Tunnel Road
–A road trip around Scotland, including Campbeltown (Springbank Distillery!) and the Road to Applecross
–A road trip around Ireland

I think it'd be interesting to travel the Road of Bones to Magadan, but I'm not crazy or stupid enough actually to think I'd ever do it. I'd also love to be able to travel from Istanbul to Delhi via the historic route through the Khyber Pass, but I doubt that will be viable or even remotely safe in my lifetime.

The next major trip we're discussing, aside from our Christmas visit to see relatives in Florida, is a trip to Rome roughly a year from now, and if we make that trip we won't be renting a car or doing any road-tripping.

Regarding Hawaii, I've been to Oahu (did not rent a car) and Kauai (did rent a car and drove all over except for Polihale).

Of the trips listed above, obviously Key West is the most realistic in the short term, though I've struggled to figure out how to fit it into any of our Florida itineraries due to our desire to spend time with our relatives while their kids are still kids.

I'm a bit surprised you haven't done this one. I know I've told the story of how I tricked my mom into taking US 70 east out of the Raleigh area instead of US 64 when she had taken over driving for my dad on a family vacation to the Outer Banks so we could ride the ferry. My dad didn't get too mad about that one; he was a bit of a roadgeek himself.

I describe Pittsburgh as a region-sized machine for the production of primarily one product, one which it doesn't make much of anymore.  It is still fascinating to look at the massive scale of organization that exists around this one goal, both extant and vestigial.  Any lover of the built environment can keep busy for days.

Well, Boston was originally a number one destination, but then I saw the view of the Pittsburgh skyline from the Fort Pitt Tunnel and was mesmerized. Once I get everything I need for the trip, I will make it as soon as I can. My route basically utilizes I-70 from the Pennsylvania Turnpike and goes to I-79 to get to I-376 so I can hit the tunnel (I believe that was it).

For Spain-China, across to Turkey and then through Iran (then through the ex-soviet -stans) is a better bet than Russia. Especially given Russia-EU tensions over Ukraine (and Belarus will support Russia more than Russia does!). Also not as much driving across boring plains as a more northern route.

ISIS is certainly a valid concern, but I wouldn't necessarily be worried about Iran per se. I'd be more worried about the US government's retaliation against any of its citizens who might travel to Iran–I'd be concerned that I'd probably wind up on a no-fly list or the like. With all that said, though, I've read the crossing from Iran to Pakistan is particularly dangerous and should be avoided. Unfortunately, the alternative is probably worse because it requires going through Afghanistan. From Tehran you could always turn northeast towards Turkmenistan and on to China through the former Soviet Central Asian republics (the old Silk Road).

Regarding Russia, I've long wanted to travel the Trans-Siberian Railway, taking a few days to see parts of the country at the western end before or after the train trip, but since I don't speak more than a very few words of Russian and I can't read their alphabet (again other than a few words I recognize, like "PECTOPAH" being "restaurant") I don't think it's a practical idea. There's so much history in Russia I'd love to see and I know we didn't even really scratch the surface during our brief two days in St. Petersburg in 2007.

The Yazidhi as they are rare and PC got enough press to get Americans behind an aid relief effort by the US military, but you need killing American captives to get the public behind what needs to be done - going back into Iraq to contain these monsters as part of the 'you break it, you own it' promise behind starting the Iraq war (and being a responsible superpower).

*Paris to Warsaw via Frankfurt am Main and Berlin
*Dover to Glasgow via London, Birmingham, Manchester, and Newcastle
*Madrid to Turin via Monte Carlo
*Vilnius to Amsterdam
*Prague to Rome via Vienna and Venice

Two US ones:
*I-95 from D.C. to Boston via The Garden State Parkway
*New Orleans to Charleston via Birmingham and Atlanta (Never spent much time in the south...)

The Russian visa regime is pretty complicated. You can't just drive up to the border and expect them to let you through. You're also subject to hefty penalties (including not being allowed to leave the country) if you overstay beyond your visa's expiry. I remember looking into the visa process when we visited St. Petersburg and ultimately deciding it was too much trouble because we were there on a cruise and could enter the country without a visa as long as we went on one of the cruise line's shore excursions and remained with the tour guide at all times (aside from obvious things like using the restroom and the like).

US 60, end to end.
US 23, end to end.
Blue Ridge Parkway/Skyline Drive.
Both sides of the Great River Road.
US 62, end to end.
Straight-line drive from the midwest to the Atlantic Ocean or Chesapeake Bay through the Appalachian Mountains. (Probably OH 32/US 50 from Cincinnati to Annapolis unless someone could suggest a better route).
US 6, end to end.
I-70 from Denver west.
Moki Dugway.
US 1, end to end.

Finish up what I lack of US 11 (need most of New York, Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi; I already have it clinched in LA, GA, VA, WV, MD and PA).
Finish up US 52 (need North Dakota, Minnesota, most of Iowa, most of both Carolinas).

My current road trip goal is to travel through all 48 of the contiguous United States. So far, I have 30. The ones I have missing are in the northwest and southeast. And I hope to take one road trip per year for the next two years to get them. We'll see if I can swing that.

The only trip that I am really thinking of right now, involve the Pacific Northwest.  I'd really like to finish the Pacific Coat up from San Francisco through Oregon.  In particular, Oregon has some pretty funky bridges that I'd like to see along US-101.

I've driven all of Corridor D, and have also driven all of US 50 from the Kansas/Missouri line to just shy of Winchester, Va. So this would not be new territory for me at all.

What I would like to do is start out at a point west of the Appalachians and drive east along as straight a route as possible, staying on the same road if it could be practically done, through the foothills, the mountains, then the foothills again and then to the coastal area -- preferably all in one day during daylight hours.

I've driven I-64 from Frankfort, Ky. to Staunton, Va. in one fell swoop (which almost got me out of the mountains) but it's hardly a straight drive. I've also done I-64 from Morehead, Ky. (already in the mountains) to the US 15 exit in Virginia, but again, it's not straight.

US 50 from some point between Cincinnati and Chillicothe east to D.C. or Annapolis seems to me to be the best candidate for this excursion, but I'm sure there are other options too.

Perhaps US 6 from somewhere near the Ohio/Pennsylvania line to somewhere in Connecticut or Rhode Island?

Or maybe US 64 from somewhere in middle Tennessee to the Raleigh area?

US 33's NW-SE jaunt in Ohio disqualifies it; if there was a good E-W route that one could follow from some point in the middle of the state to Pomeroy, that combination might work.

Anyone have any good suggestions?

Ok, having given it more thought, and partly nudged by hbelkins's last post, I would like to drive in a generally west-southwest direction, off-interstate, as far as possible... with no map.

I would bring my phone, of course, but try not to consult it. Really, the joy for me in exploring is in reading the roads and the towns and the landscape fir their clues.  My favorite parts of my favorite road trips have been like this, letting the brain get some exercise.

I think going too far into rural Québec–my other recent fixation–like this would be a little scary, given my scant French though scary might be fun.

Honestly, I think 33 would be the way to go. In the big picture, its course is really more NW/SE, but to me, that's okay because the Appalachians are roughly oriented NE/SW anyway, so you're still cutting across them transversely. Plus, starting in, say, Columbus, you really get the feeling of coming out of the totally flat plains, into the rolling southern Ohio hills, then the more defined hills of the Appalachian Plateau in WV, then dropping down the Allegheny Front into the Ridge and Valley before cutting across the Blue Ridge formation into the piedmont and then on to Richmond, which is where the fall line actually is in the James River between the piedmont and the coastal plain. You hit all the physiographic regions of the Appalachians on one numbered route, which to me makes it okay to cheat a little bit in that route not necessarily running perfectly W-E the whole way.

If the east-west thing is still a big hangup, U.S. 50 would be your best bet I think, starting roughly in Hillsboro, OH.

Anyway, as for my own list, it's pretty simple: anywhere to anywhere, as long as it's two lanes. Really, I'd just spend my life rambling, if I could afford to.

But I do have a few ideas of some more concrete itineraries that I'd like to do, first some things that I could probably take care of with just a weekend trip here or there:
* Philadelphia to Erie, roughly following the route of the original U.S. 120.
* OH 3, approximately the original Three-C road, still mostly two-lane Midwestern goodness.
* The full NY 28 loop, Hudson Valley through the Catskills, Cooperstown, Adirondacks.
* MA 2 (2A where applicable) across Massachusetts.

Then there are some grander, longer-term aspirations:
* U.S. 11
* U.S. 20
* U.S. 50
* U.S. 60
* U.S. 191
* The SR 200 chain from the Minnesota northwoods to Sandpoint, ID.
* Want to run the Ohio River roads, north bank going out, south bank coming back.
* There are a few places I wouldn't mind just roaming around for a week or so, such as Michigan, which is still pretty much a big blank spot on my personal map. Washington state is another. And I can always get immersed in New Mexico.
* Really want to do a loop around Nova Scotia some day.
* BC 3, the Crowsnest Hwy, looks like a lot of fun

From Cincinnati, I would go to:

1) St Louis > west end of I-70 to clinch MOST of that road > Salt Lake City > Chicago area > Louisville (getting I-65 in Indiana). All that would be needed for a full I-70 clinch is from I-79 in Washington, PA east to the PA Turnpike; from the Turnpike to I-68, and from I-270 in Frederick to the east terminus, and those would be grabbed before then.
2) St Louis > Oklahoma City (via I-44, almost clinching it) > Los Angeles (via I-40/15) > Dallas (via I-10/20) > OKC (possibly using the rest of I-44?) > Knoxville (clinching I-40 west of the Appalachians)
3) the UP of Michigan (clinch of I-75 in MI/OH)
4) Miami > Charleston, SC (clinch I-75 south of Florida's I-275 [and, thus in combination with #3, in totality], I-95 in Florida, and I-26) > Wilmington, NC (getting me I-95 in South Carolina) > Knoxville (clinch of I-40, if combined with #2, that gets a full clinch).
5) Similar to #4, but instead of west on I-40 I backtrack to I-95, run up I-95 all the way to Canada thus clinching it entirely. Then cross Maine and NH, south on I-93 to 90 (clinching THAT), west on I-90 and clinch the little bit I have left in MA and NY. Then back home via 90 to 71.

I'm fortunate to have done many of the US and Canada trips on some of the lists posted so far, but there are plenty left.  Here are some of mine, most of which aren't happening any time soon.

In the US and Canada:

- a month or so during summer or early fall driving to the national parks in the western US, aiming mainly for ones I'm missing with return visits to some favorites
- an entire winter spent driving throughout the western US and Canada, doing a whole lot of skiing and seeing some of those national parks during the winter season
- return visit to northwestern Canada and Alaska, this time via some routes I missed on my first trip, ideally with a side trip to Yellowknife
- a big loop through Labrador, ferry to Newfoundland, ferry to Nova Scotia, side trip to PEI, up through New Brunswick to the Gaspe crossing back into the US at Fort Kent
- more of US 101
- a trip around the north side of Lake Huron and Lake Superior
- drive as far as one can on the Mississippi delta
- Rio Grande valley and coastal southern Texas
- ultimately, anywhere I haven't been via roads I haven't traveled, which I think summarizes it for many of us

Europe:

- My travels to date have been fairly limited, so nearly anything would be interesting, but a driving tour visiting major cities and other points of interest throughout western Europe would be excellent.

Outside of that, I'm much less adventurous than many here.  I think I'd want to be traveling with a native or at least a speaker of the local languages in most of Latin America, Eastern Europe, Asia, and Africa.

When you get to Panama City you'll have to go north to Colon and ship your car to Cartagena, Colombia. For some odd reason a road hasn't been built from Panama to Colombia. Colombia is building a road to the Panamanian border, but Panama seems uninterested in connecting Highway 1 with it, right now. The shipping is expensive too. It's about $1000 (USD). I'm hoping that one day I will be able to make this trip too.

The estimate was 300 million USD. The US also has agreed to pay for 1/3 of the construction costs. So Panama essentialy has to come up with 100 million USD (since Colombia is already building their section for 100 million) to pay for it. I'm sure they could find a way if they really wanted it. Not to mention all the money they probably get from having the Panama Canal.

LA 1: and any other SR 1, because they should be long, important highways...but many aren't (I'm looking at you MS & AR)!

US 51 because it gets no love in Mississippi, and I know there is more to it up north.  :no:

Mississippi set up their 1/2-digit state highways in a grid format.  It may not be long or important, but it fits their grid.  It should be noted that, had they set their state highway system up before the US highways came about (Mississippi didn't get to it until ca. 1930), US 61 would have supplanted most of it's likely route.

As for AR 1, true it's not all that long, but it is an important route...important enough to where AHTD got it included on the National Highway System (http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/planning/national_highway_system/nhs_maps/arkansas/ar_arkansas.pdf).

That's what I wanna do...follow the entire original route.  I have lived on it all my life and have been very curious about what it looks like now & imagine what it may have looked like back in the day.

I didn't realize AR 1 covered that much territory.  The map you provided definitely paints a different picture than what I had.

It's on my list, too. I've been as far as El Paso before its decommissioning, and posters on this site and others have documented so many remnants in the southwest that would be so cool to find.

If you want to drive any route in Arkansas front to back, AR 7 is where it's at, IMO.

Finish I-70. I would have to start in mid-MO and go east from there (or vice versa).
Having just filled a lot of gaps on I-80, that looks pretty achievable as well.

One or two of these could fit with an interesting east coast road meet.

US1 to Key West - my favorite drive in the US
Ireland west coast (Dingle-Shannon ferry-Slea Head-Cliffs of Moher-Burren-Galway-Clifden-Westport-Cong) - my favorite drive in the world
Las Vegas to Four Corners and back via old 66, Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Bryce, and Zion - just a few weeks ago
US129 near NC/TN border - never made it past 3rd gear :)
Blue Ridge Pkwy - more great views, would be spectacular in the fall
NY Thruway - the whole thing, from the Bronx to Erie via Niagara Falls... surprisingly pretty drive
PA Turnpike - also very pretty, particularly the western half... skipped past Pittsburgh, though... maybe next time
OH pike/Indiana Toll Rd/Chicago Skyway - Classic historic highway... not much to see, though
I-55 end to end - New Orleans, Memphis, St. Louis, and Chicago... checked off lots of attractions on this trip

Want to do:

Megabus? Certainly a coach company, rather than buses.

Depending on the ferry route that could be a total borefest or it could have some nice scenery between Ayr and Cairnryan (and cool motorways in Glasgow) to give something other than boredom, but it's still just about the most boring thing to do with a day from Edinburgh - it's not like you'd be able to get out and look at the places inbetween. I'd spend more time doing the west coast (of Scotland, as you've done Ireland) and the north coast of Northern Ireland than travelling in discomfort missing all the fun stuff.

Citylink and Ulsterbus do a combined service with Stena line on that route.  I just thought it was interesting that one ticket gets you on four different vehicles... Citylink from Edinburgh via Glasgow to Cairnryan, Stenaline to Belfast, Ulsterbus to Belfast bus station, and either Ulsterbus or Bus Eireann to Dublin.

But yeah I'll more likely do that as a way to get from one country to the other rather than to check out scenery.

I hate that we didn't spend more time in northern Ireland while we were there, but... only so much time... we did at least take a day trip up to Belfast to look at the murals on our last day before flying out.

Any particular routes in Scotland that shouldn't be missed?

Some of those parkways are pretty short.  You could knock a few of them out in one day.  I went to a wedding in north Westchester one time and took the whole Saw Mill up and Bronx River back down.

I really like the Saw Mill.  It's long and curvy and a really fun drive, particular on the northern half where there's not as much traffic.  The Bronx is prettier and older and more interesting from a road history perspective, but it gets a lot of traffic which makes it not as much fun to drive.

All of those Westchester parkways minus the Taconic could be done in one afternoon. The Palisades is another hour, depending on where you are when you plan to start it. The Taconic is the only real time-consuming one out of them.  All told, though, this is all easily doable in one day as long as you are planning right.

The last changes were drive-on-right to drive-on-left (Samoa, Falkland Islands after liberation) and took a couple of hours overnight.

But they were small countries with not a huge amount of traffic (plus the Falkland Islands was a reversion after the invading Argentines changed the side of the road driven on, so it wasn't difficult).

I think the DfT costed converting the UK as a bit of fun - it was massively expensive and would take ages to fully sort the signs out (you'd spend a year or two placing the safety critical ones, but bagged up). Not even the conformity zealots think it a reasonable idea (though they still think the UK having the Euro would be a good idea :no:)

The only state I have yet to drive in is Alaska so a road trip to there along with Yellowknife is my number one.  I want to do it by motorcycle and again by 4 wheels.

Next would be to ride my motorcycle up to Newfoundland and Labrador.  I have driven to Nova Scotia but didn't make the ferry trip to NL.

These both should be finished by 2016 if my plans are not interrupted again next summer.   

I've driven from Munich to Athens via Yugoslavia (August 1968) but I'd still like to do it on a motorcycle and continue on to Istanbul with a return up through Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and Czech Republic.  I know there are tours for this but the $$$ are the limiting factor.

Deals can be had on this journey if you are willing to go during the winter...definitely recommend an inside cabin for the trip back to NY no matter when you go.  Excellent for sleeping/recovery and 5 of the 7 days are 25 hour days.

The bigger problem is having their schedule coincide with yours...if they are just turning around and coming right back that is not useful for traveling around Europe.  They also do a different extreme and go all over the place over several weeks before coming back across the pond.

I feel fortunate to have been able to do this where my stay in England was 9 days back in 2012.  Have been trying to find a way to do it again with the intent of cruising to Norway but haven't found a schedule that fits into the maximum amount of time off my boss will allow (31 days including the weekends...).

The one that's really more a pipe dream than anything would be driving coast to coast WITHOUT getting on a freeway.  It'd take a long time, and require some planning in advance, but sticking to mostly US and state routes that aren't freeways.  Probably get tougher as you head east.

If anything I'd think the opposite... interstates out east tend to have parallel local roads... not so much out west where the interstates were built right on top of the US routes.

US 20 gets you to Erie (20A in Springfield; detour via Troy if you must avoid the Albany-Rensselaer bridge), then US 19 to Meadville, US 322 and PA 18 to Sharon, old route to Warren, SR 5 to Ravenna, SR 59 and old alignment to Akron, SR 18 to Medina, US 42 to Lodi, US 224 to Huntington, US 24 to Lewistown, US 136 to Edison, US 6 to Sterling, SH 14 to Baker Mountain, US 40 to Duchesne, US 191 to Helper, US 6 to Ely (old alignment in Spanish Fork-Payson), US 50 to Carson City, SR 88 to Stockton, SR 4 to Brentwood, Vasco Road to Livermore, then you have multiple choices to hook around through San Jose.

A big circle (rectangle?) of the US heading down to I-10 and going all the way across to California, then up the Pacific Coast Highway/US-101/I-5 to I-90, back across to the Atlantic Coast and back here to NC. Still on my bucket list/dream drives I probably won't take for various reasons:

Drive to Alaska and back, hitting all the municipalities while there.
James Bay up and back
Labrador/Newfoundland round trip


If I ever became insanely wealthy, I'd want to drive every U.S. highway end to end. But, being a realist, one trip I would like to make, maybe once I'm done hitting counties, is to drive the entire length of U.S. 2.

I've been on a big stretches of it, including a fun trip a few years ago from Spokane through Shelby, MT. I'd also like to add U.S. 6 to that across the country as well. Driven on many many stretches of it in my life, including all of PA and most of Ohio.

One other trip I'd like to make some day is if I get out west again without another destination in mind and drive U.S. 50 from at least the CA/NV line to I-15.

My wife from the SF Bay area NEVER referred to San Francisco by the term "Frisco", and she's half-Mexican descent with some Filipino roots and Italian family from St. Louis MO, so she's familiar with some Spanish words. There is an actual Texas town named Frisco, an upcoming suburb north of Dallas. I had visited the SF Bay area with my parents when I was in my teens in the 90s, and I like to travel to Norcal again beyond Gilroy south of San Jose (few of my wife's relatives live there) if I have the opportunity.

In the last year, I've made a Pacific to the plains drive, which had kind of been on my bucket list. I can only really think of two road trips I'd like to claim before the big journey is over.

1. The whole of US 20. I've got large stretches of it already. I suppose because I've spent much of my life living nearish to it.

2. The Dempster Highway. Totally a crazy idea. Yes, I've read the trips of what it takes. If the road to Nunavut ever gets built, I might add that too.

I'd also like to drive to Mexico, but I'm in no hurry for that.

--Drive US 202 in its entirety.  Not sure what draws me to it, other than it just seems like a very strangely routed "spur" off of US 2 (I guess a lot of people in Bangor wanted to go to Delaware), the fact that I grew up near the road, and the variety of landscapes it passes through (rural & urban).  Heck, even just in Massachusetts, it passes through the hills west of the Quabbin and then hits the decaying cities of Holyoke and Westfield. 

Used to dink around with the idea of doing the Dempster Highway, too.

Yes, do it. Add Skyline Drive and US-441 through the Smoky Mountains National Park to that as well. I just did the whole shebang from Front Royal, VA to Gatlinburg, TN last month and it was absolutely stunning. Because of the lower speed limits and all of the overlooks to pull over at it took me 2 days but it was time well spent!

That is a long way off for me because I am only 12 (That is the thing I hate most about myself amoung others) and also I live near Cincinnati.

Just typing quickly past my bedtime.  I thought others had at least mentioned US 2 and Alaska and Overseas Highways are pretty common, as well as Tail of the Dragon.  I suppose McCarthy Road and US 202 aren't in that mix.

Reading this comment reminded me of the afternoon in January 1996 when a commuter train I missed boarding by 30 seconds wound up hitting a tractor-trailer in Wakefield (MA).  A couple of days later, my boss, who knew I was a train guy, asked me if I would have liked to have been on that train.  My response was an immediate and emphatic "No way!". (BTW, to this day I will never curse at having missed a train or bus)

Right there with you.  I have lived, worked, gone to school, and played at multiple points along this route that I like to think of as the Northeast (Service) Corridor, sort of the back hallway to US 1's main drag.  Runs through and near many of my favorite places.

I also feel like U.S. 1 has lost its romance somewhat due to the extensive chunks of it that have been made into big four-lane arterial or limited access freeway that traverses a sprawly, homogenous built environment. If I ever do undertake following a single long-distance U.S. route from beginning to end, I'd want it to be one where there's something new and different around every bend, and I just think that goes missing enough on 1 to diminish any desire I might have had to tour the whole thing some day. But horses for courses and all that.

Back in my November trip to the New York Tri-State area, one of the items on my itinerary was some pictures of Mount Kisco's old New York Central Railroad station, but on the way back, rather than stopping at Grand Central Terminal, I decided to stop at Fordham Plaza, and I walked Fordham Road from there to Pelham Parkway station on the IRT White Plains Road Line. Along the way, it barely phased me that this was part of U.S. 1.

Luckily there's plenty of concurrency between the two.

90 has some really wonderful parts. It's also got some tremendously boring parts, but on the whole the wonderful beats the boring. 80, on the other hand, is brutal across the plains. The levels of truck traffic on it are much higher (in my experience) than on 90. Both are pretty busy though.

I've always wanted to drive all of US 50.  I've been on pieces of it from Colorado to Maryland, but the longest contiguous stretch I currently have is from Clarksburg, WV to Ocean City, MD.

I should add that I also want to drive the length of MN/ND/MT 200.  I worked for attorneys in Duluth, MN that would take that route on the return from courthouses in Fargo and Grand Forks since they could stop and fish at whichever lake they chose along the route.

There are several, but the one that has been in my mind recently is the highway that runs through China's Guoliang Tunnel. Google that and have a look if you haven't heard of it; it's one of the world's most remarkable tunnels, mostly because of where it goes and how it was constructed. In fact, I think the story of the tunnel's construction would make a great movie.

I just finished a 9000 mile motorcycle trip to Alaska and Yellowknife, Northwest Territory, so that is one trip off of my list below.  Newfoundland along with Labrador is on my schedule for early to mid June 2016. 

Now I have driven all states (including DC) and all Canadian provinces with paved roads except Newfoundland.  I've seen Mexico while driving also.  I have ridden my made in the USA Honda VTX 1300R motorcycle in 49 states; Washington, DC; and 8 provinces. Might do a small part of Mexico in October on it.

My newest goal is to drive through 49 US states, 10 Canadian Provinces, 2 Canadian territories, and 31 Mexican states. (Hawaii, Nunavut, and any other US territory is not on my list. If a road is ever built to Nunavut then it will be on my to do list.)

Currently I've drove in 13 states and 2 provinces. (However I have been to 31 states.)

Basically a road trip to Alaska and to Cancun is on the distant radar. I don't plan on ever leaving North America (US, Canada, and Mexico) again in my lifetime. Spain was a great experience, but there are plenty of places to see in North America. God put me on this wonderful continent for a reason.

Another goal of mine is to never fly in a jet ever again. I literally hate flying. This is a pretty big factor in the above plan.

Give me some credit here. I'm not that stupid. I know Hawaii is a state. I'm just saying I will probably never visit Hawaii since I can't drive there as I hate flying. There is also no way that I'm taking a ship there either. The same is also true for US territories (like Puerto Rico, Guam, and a few others).

Iceland Ring Road...spectacular scenery and easy access to several substantial waterfalls and fjords.

Since I don't fly this one may have to wait for retirement, since no cruise ship routinely goes to Iceland from the US and I haven't found any cargo ships that go there either who accept a handful of passenger fares...

So this may require cruising to England first then Iceland and doing the reverse to get back home...

Just Hawaii. My goal is to drive to all the lower 48 plus Alaska.

I was trying to say that my goal is to drive to every North American (US, Canada, and Mexico) state / province / territory that is possible before I die. It is not possible to drive to Hawaii, Nunavut, or US territories (like Puerto Rico and Guam). And since I don't like to fly I don't ever intend on going to any of those places.

I would love to see the roads in Western Europe. The coast of France and the Alps come to mind. Though, I think I'd be nervous to drive along the more narrower mountain roads  :-D

Depending on your remaining lifespan, there's a proposed highway connection from northern Manitoba that would let you get Nunavut. Decades away at best, but be patient.

Awesome!!! I hope it happens. As long as it doesn't take 60-70 years to complete it, I should still be around.

I have heard the same about the Trans-Labrador.  I have also heard a little more is paved but still very rugged.  I am sort of like you.  It is one I'd like to do but at my age,67, if I travel it, it will have to be in a 4x4 pick up not on a motorcycle.  My Newfoundland-Labrador trip will be by way of Nova Scotia and ferrys.   

I didn't get to do the Dalton this year by motorcycle but next year is pretty certain.  My cruiser is not the one for me to go on.  I'll be on a dual sport.

I have often thought about doing a road trip from Lisbon, Portugal to Warsaw, Poland. Unfortunately I don't know if I could do two eight hour flights again. (I've been to Madrid and Barcelona.) Flying has to be one of the most boring things to do, especially if you don't have a window seat.

That would be an awesome trip. 

I used to fly a lot with a friend who had his own airplane (turbo with oxygen) and really enjoyed it.  But I am with you on commercial flights.  I ride a motorcycle or drive a car for 18+ hours but 8 hours on a commercial plane is pushing me to become suicidal.  :crazy:  I guess that is why they serve booz.

The Blue Ridge Parkway. I just went on it from the VA border to Boone. There was ice and lots of scenery. (that doesn't sound interesting, does it? lol)

Something I would recommend to all the AARoads Members if you ever get a chance. Drive through El Paso on I-10 at night. It is one of the coolest cities to drive through at night. It sits at a higher elevation than the Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez, which is what makes the drive through El Paso so neat. You can see the whole city of Juarez lit up at night. It's really cool. I will definitely do it again at some point.

The first time I ever came into El Paso was on I-10 from the east. I had fallen asleep shortly after Van Horn and woke up to see all those lights (and the famous star in front of me). It was definitely a surreal experience.

US-83 end-to-end.  I read about it in Jamie Jensen's Road Trip USA.  He calls it "The Road to Nowhere" because it doesn't pass near any major cities or tourist attractions.  Sounds perfect to me.

A long loop of state and US highways in west Texas.  Same reason.

The single-digit US routes in the east so I can get photos of the shields.  A photo of the US-1/US-2 concurrency in Houlton ME is a must.

I'm not really crazy about tourist attractions either. Usually what I've found is that when you drive to places that most people never go to, you end up finding places that are way better than tourist attractions. Most tourist attractions seem to something that is man-made. I prefer seeing rural areas and nature. Often going to unknown places is a lot easier on the wallet too.

Most people in my area seem to always want to go to Florida. I would rather go to New Mexico any day of the week over Florida. I've been to Florida 6 times in my life and honestly 2 times was enough. I only want to go back to Florida one more time, and when I go back I am going to take US 41 across the Everglades and drive all the way to Key West. Most people in my area have never been west of St. Louis which I find very odd. I guess New Mexico is the unknown for most people. New Mexico is by far my favorite state to visit. Two times in New Mexico is not enough for me. I could visit NM 50 times and it would never get old.
