3 feet of snow expected in NYC. How many people are calling out tomorrow (Jan. 27)

In Massachusetts, Governor Baker declared a state of emergency about 11 am today, and instructed non-emergency" state employees to stay home tomorrow.  Statewide travel ban on all roads goes into effect at midnight, and the Boston area transit system will be completely closed on Tuesday.

Latest forecasts are for between 24 to 30 inches of snow, with a high possibility of coastal flooding.

I kinda wanted to go out for dinner tonight, but I'm not risking shit. I swear, my luck is beyond garbage - barely any significant snow up to this point, and then suddenly the week of my birthday there is a freak snowstorm.

I suppose it beats my last birthday though, by a long shot.

Even if there were not a travel ban, you wouldn't be going to work here tomorrow unless lives depended on it.  I told everyone not to expect to work until Thursday and even that and Friday will probably be slow to get back up to speed.

I have food and booze, and as long as the power stays on, sanity.

In the Philly area, SEPTA announced that it will run on a Saturday schedule for its Regional (commuter) Rail lines tomorrow; meaning that there the Cynwyd line trains will not be running.

At this stage, practically all forms of travel are closed or prohibited across NYC and Long Island, including bus, subway, rail, bicycle and motor vehicle, as of 11pm. That includes the MTA and PA crossings, city streets and highways, the Staten Island Ferry, and all railroads except Amtrak.

Almost none operate within the area described, even on a normal day. Those that do are subsidiary to the commuter railroads, so I would bet they're not working either.

The DOW (Doppler On Wheels) is in the Boston area.  We almost sent a team down from the college today to assist them during the storm, but we cancelled this afternoon.
Title: Re: Ready for the blizzard?

I'm calling this storm a flop for central and southern New Jersey - totals were supposed to be 10-18 inches in my area, and now TWC is showing only an accumulation of barely an inch for the rest of the night. Evidently, the storm must've reversed it's course too late so only the coastal areas as well as Massachusetts in general are getting whumped by it.
Title: Re: Ready for the blizzard?

So basically the storm tracked a bit further east than predicted and is dumping the worst of its snow in the ocean. And to think we have a travel ban with transit service shut down for this. Womp womp.

As for calliing out, I work from home most days, so as long as I have power and internet my job is not affected unless a meeting gets canceled on account of the weather (but then I still do other work instead).

My girlfriend meanwhile had her job send everyone home early today and cancel work entirely tomorrow, so she gets some free paid time off.

No school for me until Thursday. As I'm typing this, it's super windy and the snow has stopped. I think the worst of it is going to hit within the next few hours. They originally said we would get anywhere between 24-36 inches, but that is slowly dropping down to 18-25 with possible areas over 3 feet. As of now, we probably have around 5-6 inches of snow.

1 AM update from Queens: it's snowing, but peacefully. Very little wind, and it's not coming down like the dickens. In the past 24 hours I'd guesstimate we've accumulated 6 inches or so.

I'm sitting in my plow truck reading this. I'm just on I-295 in South Jersey. Not a flake on the road. Travel ban on effect. Traffic is lighter than normal (considering it's normally very light anyway at 1:30am) but there is a little out here, moving at normal speeds.

Similar conditions in the Bronx: an abundant, tranquil snowfall, the dog and I romping in the middle of our normally busy streets. But we're only two hours into the warned period so far, and the snow bands have been tracking this way, so we'll see what the morning brings.

The only way Seattle ever gets a big snow event is when we get a cold arctic blast from Canada meeting a pineapple express from Hawaii (below):

(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F1.bp.blogspot.com%2F_vgawnhRg_KY%2FTQMfW2i0_8I%2FAAAAAAAADm0%2Ffa64daYCpnk%2Fs1600%2F201012110630.gif&hash=2721a9d499065715c89d1cab12ac76547cf71095)

The problem is that the pineapple express contains warm air from Hawaii, and for whatever reason, the warm air usually wins and it usually just snows for 20 minutes before changing to rain.

In short, I've never experienced a "blizzard". The most amount of snow I've ever seen at my home was 10 inches in December 2008, which fell over the course of three days.

Today, the 26th of January of 2015, it was 62 degrees Fahrenheit in Seattle and sunny, and I was walking around with short sleeves and no jacket. Eventually, the trend will end, but I'm enjoying it while it lasts.

For the metro-Philly area; this blizzard was largely a bust.  As mentioned earlier, SEPTA ran a Saturday schedule for its Regional Rail lines; which meant the inbound train I was on was packed and was forced to express/pass by 3 stations (due to crowding) prior to reaching the University City station.

Due to NJ's statewide driving ban; not one co-worker from South Jersey made it in; unless they lived within walking distance of a PATCO station.
Title: Re: Ready for the blizzard?
Post by: Zeffy on January 27, 2015, 10:38:22 AM
New Jersey is definitely one of the biggest losers in this, with snowfall now totaling up to less than a foot of snow. NJ Transit should be starting up again, I know the Raritan Valley Line should be started soon or already did. Travel ban is lifted entirely. Most schools closed anyway in anticipation for the monster storm that wasn't.

On the other hand, Long Island, Eastern Connecticut, Massachusetts, Boston, and everything north of Boston seem to be getting slammed by the storm. So it wasn't a total bust - it was a bust for Eastern Pennsylvania and all of New Jersey, as well as the New York City metro area.
Title: Re: Ready for the blizzard?

I think this blizzard was hyped way too much. Different snow total models with varying numbers probably didn't help either. We got around 10 inches of snow. Eastern CT got hit the worst. NWS still shows us as in the 18-24 inch range but I highly doubt that we will even get a foot.

As of 11:30 AM, the snow in SW CT is slowly letting up. It went from moderate snow to light flurries. I don't expect much else to come. I read that we're getting a small light snow shower Thursday-Friday and another potential "big storm" hitting us Sunday into Monday.

Well, everything is hyped way too much where the Internet's involved, but I'm glad at least that a weather event can still generate hype even after so many "disappointing" results.

But yes, on waking up this morning I find that our abundant snowfall didn't persist, and there's a perfectly manageable amount of snow to deal with on our day off today. And yes, New Yorkers are taking to social media in droves complaining about how they were shortchanged by the weather forecast. The modern, online New Yorker sure does seem to have trouble dealing with almost anything these days!

Generally, there's always different models that show different storm paths.  Eventually, many of them tend to fall in relative line with each other.  This time they didn't. Forecasters tended to go with the Euro model though for this storm which was providing the very high storm totals, even after the storm was taking a decidedly different path.

Albany was expecting to get a foot of snow from this and it's pretty much been a bust here too.  The meteroilogist said I'd experience 8 inches last night and I woke up feeling very unimpressed.

Just half an inch on the ground this morning.  We do have a little bit now, but it's only expected to accumulate a couple inches.  That's nothing for a girl who grew up in the Lake Ontario snowbelt.

Right now is looking like a REALLY good time to clinch stuff in NYC.  Guess I should have taken the day off and gone down there... so much less traffic with everyone preemptively taking the day off!

Travel ban in western Massachusetts (except for I-90) was lifted at noon today (1-27).  Travel ban in central and eastern Massachusetts is to be lifted at midnight tonight.  Massachusetts "non emergency" state workers directed to not report for work on Wednesday 1-28.

Wakefield got just over 21 inches - figure I'm looking at about 3 to 4 hours of shoveling out tomorrow.

Monitor the radar and if you see a big angry looking line of storms coming for you, find somewhere substantial to wait it out. The severe storms tend to be over fairly quick (it can go from calm to hailing to calm within the span of an hour). Most of the big storms are driven by cold fronts (cold dry air diving down from Canada and such meeting up with warm moist air from the Gulf), so if you pay attention to the weather reports you can generally guess where the bad stuff might be and work your schedule to avoid it.

Violent storms are so random that you never know where they're going to strike. I would keep an eye on the weather but things can change very quickly in this part of the country.

I estimate about 10 or 11 inches here in New Britain, CT, southwest of Hartford. The storm totals shoot way up once you got east of the Connecticut River. Our state's jackpot was Thompson. They saw 33 inches or so. It's the far northeast corner of the state in Windham County, where I-395 heads north into Webster, MA. A slight jog to the east puts you in northwest Rhode Island. Wells, ME picked up at least 24 inches (I lived there from 1974-77).

P.S. There was residual snow on the ground for the 4 to 5 wet inches that fell on Saturday morning.

We're south of where the blizzard forecasts were in effect. We got a dusting of snow, not enough to bother shovelling the driveway (had I really wanted to clear it, I could have used a broom or the leaf blower, but the sun cleared it for me yesterday). The big issue here was the plunging temperature. Yesterday morning the streets in our neighborhood were pretty well frozen over. I was very thankful the traffic light as I was leaving our neighborhood was green when I reached it because the street leading to it was a solid sheet of ice and I was going a little bit fast because I needed the momentum to get up the hill to where the light is. But I must say VDOT did an excellent job clearing the main roads.

Today, it's just windy and cold. Stopped at the gas station to fill the tank and it was no fun.

4-6 here.  It'll polish the muddy crust of yesterday's snow with a fresh white.

Snow rode beautifully and forgivingly today.  Pleasant bumps, borderline moguls in spots, and a welcome return to the pure stuff instead of sprayed-on shaved ice.  Not a complaint to be heard on the mountain.

Clearly this is catching the plow crews when they are spread thin.  The roads are a little rough here today.  However, I greatly appreciate the government allowing me to travel this time.

Is it me or is there a lot more trucking away of snow these days than there used to be? It might just be that I don't notice it because snow in this amount is not an annual occurrence, but I feel like I see a lot more aggressive snow removal this way than in years past.

I feel the same way actually.. I saw 5 trucks today and we had about an inch (not too bad, but enough to get the roads in slippery shape). They are salting more roads and every town is making sure the roads are clear to drive on. The worst part is the freezing rain and ice.

We might as well rename this to the  "Winter 2015" thread. We're getting MORE snow this weekend as well as the majority of the Northeast. Boston and New England in general are getting hit almost every day with some sort of snow. They're expecting 6-12 inches for us Sunday-Tuesday. Hopefully everyone is staying safe and warm in this crazy weather!  :D

Send some of it to us.  Still not enough snow in the mountains to sled.

Weather forecasts are moving targets. A couple days ago we were expected to get 6+ inches of snow between Sunday night and Monday. Now the forecast is for 1-3 inches of wintry mix becoming freezing rain on Monday.

Of course that actually makes it worse. Snow you can drive through if you have to and can be plowed away as it falls. Freezing rain turns roads into skating rinks, can't be plowed away, and trying to salt it while it's still falling is shoveling shit against the tide.

But again, moving target. Watch, Monday will come and it'll just be ordinary non-freezing rain. Or ordinary snow. I'll take either.

We had thunderstorms last night here in Central Florida. You guys up north knew about that already though, right? Since the NYC and Boston local weather forecasts are apparently national news, I'm assuming you're getting full coverage of ours as well. That seems only fair.

I don't know about New York, but we had more snow in a week than has ever been recorded here (and we get a lot of snow), so it might merit some coverage.

I'm moving to Boston in 3 months, I appreciate the coverage of Boston weather.

Yes, I'm willingly moving from the South back to New England. I'd rather deal with a New England winter than a Carolina summer.

Don't go waving your snow shovel in the air, or Lightning Storm Zachary might electrocute you.

Don't panic, but the latest forecast for the Boston area is 12 to 16 inches from late Sunday through early Tuesday.

We're supposedly getting less than expected, but still enough to probably cancel school. I think the forecast calls for around 6 inches of snow with periods of freezing rain. The last storm was the same prediction and we ended up with 9-10 inches of snow!

18-24 now predicted here.  That would make 6 feet in about 17 days.  Blocks are being closed day and night in a panic to cart off snow piles.

What amazes me is the scale of day and night snow removal operations going on. Today I even passed a New Jersey Department of Transportation dump truck on a local street carting away snow in Somerville, Mass.  Those guys are now in full panic mode with another foot on the way.

So, it's snowing yet again - they're predicting 6-10" for our area of Rhode Island. :paranoid:  The roads are bad enough already (my back is still sore from partially widening our street on Thursday), so this is only going to make things worse.

Spring here, when spring really hits, is a lot of fun.  People really quickly come out of the woodwork after months of relatively deserted sidewalks.  I have a feeling this one's going to be a little wild after this winter.

And by June 28 people will be declaring they hate the weather here because it's too hot and humid.

It was really windy over night here, too, with wind chills down into the single digits. They are calling for snow from between Monday night through Wednesday. Last winter we had a couple of 4+ inch events which isn't much, but 4 inches here is like 2 feet up north-the world stops.

I don't think they are looking at anything like that though this time, more like on and off freezing rain and a few light dustings.

Current wind chill here is about —13 (outside thermometer lists air temperature of about 3). The wind ripped one of the screens out of the kitchen window about 45 minutes ago. Glad I was sitting in the kitchen, saw it happen, and could go outside to retrieve it before it blew away.

Even the squirrels are nowhere to be seen today.

Several wind casualties around here this morning. At my house I had a trash can, tarp, and spare front bumper for my project car (!) blown up against the fence. On I-95 a Shell station sign had been partially blown out, and a ground-mounted BGS had fallen apart. Fortunately no debris on the road itself.

Didn't you guys have to deal with snow a couple of years ago, IIRC?  Causing problems at least in North Vancouver and that area?  I distinctly remember watching something to that effect on CBC.

As for me - well, the high winds and the like have shut down a good portion of RI, including RIPTA service (though they are determined to get to normal service tomorrow).

Well, jokes aside, Cascadia gets slammed with winter storms about every two to four years, but it's only one storm at a time (never multiple storms a la New England 2015). When it does snow, everything shuts down. Vancouver is better at weathering storms than Seattle and Portland because it's flatter, but it's still pretty crazy.

Hope the south is ready, especially Kentucky and Tennessee, because the snow is coming for you guys next. Up here, we're getting another 3-5 inches. I'm so ready for the snow to stop. (also, IT'S REALLY FREAKING COLD OUT, and last night I thought I could run outside really quickly to throw something out. I was in shorts and a sweatshirt. 25 seconds outside and my legs were beyond numb.)

It snowed here yesterday, not kidding. Temperature went down to -1 C or about 30 F. I guess that's what happens when you live in Winnipeg. Supposed to get back into Spring and Summer conditions later this week though.
