I'm glad this one's being done. The signs near the 635 interchange were beginning to show wear, especially at nighttime.

A couple of observations about the I-35 and US 69 signing rehabilitations:

*  KDOT seems to have outsourced design of both to HNTB.  I think most of the signing rehabilitations over the past five years have been done in-house, although I think PEC might have done the I-135 out-of-Wichita job.

*  Since roughly 2010, when plotted sheets became the norm and scanned sheets became uncommon, KDOT and its consultants have been experimenting with background fills for sign illustrations on sign layout and sign panel detail sheets.  Most of the other signing plans sets have had grayscale substitutions for the actual sign colors, e.g. a dark medium gray for green and a light gray for yellow bottom Exit Only panels.  This allows sign sketches to approximate the brightness values of the actual signs (light elements are light, dark elements are dark) in a way that is easy to read on the screen.  The recent HNTB plans sets, however, try to approximate the actual colors, but use RGB basis colors instead of the MUTCD Pantone equivalents.  In the case of red and blue, this does not impair screen reading, but RGB basis green is actually a lime yellow that contrasts poorly with white legend and makes the sign sketches harder to read.  I wish KDOT would enforce the use of actual MUTCD colors, not RGB basis colors or even SignCAD default colors (which include a green with less yellow in it but is still significantly lighter than MUTCD green), as peer agencies like Iowa DOT have had to learn to do after initial experimentation with too-light colors.

I hope they fix the order of signs on NB I-35 at the 87th Street/75th Street exit.

I really hope they install overhead signs for the lane drop on SB US 69 at 135th Street.  Sure the post-mounted signs helped after that lane drop went for so long being unsigned, but it would be super to bring it up to MUTCD standards.

Sorry if I'm a bit ignorant here, but where will these signage upgrades be? State-maintained routes? County roads?
The traveler sees what he sees, the tourist sees what he has come to see. - G.K. Chesterton

Major collectors are county roads. If you see a "C" in the project number, it's a county road project, and "KA" is for state roads. I believe "U" is "urban" and I'm not entirely sure what "TE" is.

I assume that there's some sort of state-aid project to assist the counties and cities that KDOT does the C and U projects under.

To add to this description:  part of the objective of the camera installation is to provide real-time indication of parking space availability for trucks.  The plans include sign panel detail sheets for static-legend signs with LED blockouts (somewhat similar in appearance to the mileage/travel time signs shown in the MUTCD) that list the distance to the next few rest areas or truck parking areas together with the spaces available in each.

The September post has been updated with the awarded bids announced on October 11.

Everything up for letting in September was awarded except for the Depot project. Apparently, there were no bidders for the project. KDOT is going to try again in November.

The real-time parking availability ITS project for I-70, meanwhile, was featured in KDOT's blog
