Title: NEW features
Post by: rickmastfan67 on March 26, 2024, 12:44:11 PM
There are a few new features in the 2.1 branch of SMF that I've turned on for us.  Please don't abuse them, or I might have to turn them back off.

==

LIKES - You can now like individual posts if you want to.  This will allow people to show their support for something, and not have to make an 'I agree' type of post if they don't want to.

@ Mentions - You are now able to directly mention another user in a post and they'll get a notification about it.  Please don't abuse this.

I'm not sure that I see where the like post button is, but I did just find another feature: if you select some text, there's now an option to quote just the selected text.  Neat.

We also appear to have the ability to edit posts while still being in the thread (similar to quick reply).

Yep! Should see that I liked your post if you want to check the back-end of the function.

The character limit rules have changed for the worse. The character limit is 300 for signatures. It used to be that it would only check before filtering and automatic replacement. Now, it also checks after. Worse, punctuation characters get replaced with HTML entities (even if they're in ASCII), meaning punctuation takes up several characters.

There's a new "country" option on my profile, but I can't add it without ruining my signature, since it's over the limit by 38 characters. (It displays as 6 over before trying to save, which I was able to get under the limit by removing "http://" from the links, but it's 38 over when it auto-adds the HTML entities.)

I've changed my display name to match Flickr and Discord. My original idea for "1" was that it wouldn't be connected with my other accounts and I could put more personal information here compared to my "hotdogPi" accounts, but that ended as soon as I got Flickr.

Some settings got reverted to the 'default' due to the changes that happened when fixing the site.

Signature limit should now be 450.

Title: Re: NEW features

Searching is more intuitive now. It was always the case that searching in a board or topic would search that board or topic rather than the entire forum. It wasn't obvious that that was the case until now, though, where it explicitly says "this topic" (and has an option to switch to "entire forum"). However, searching US 50 still gets US 250 and US 501, regexes still aren't supported, and you still can't search a user's posts from their profile.

By the way, I absolutely don't like that the window to type posts in is monospaced.

I think it should be fully fixed for the 'special' user groups now.  Honestly thought just turning it on for 'Regular Members' would have allowed it for all the extra groups. lol.

I definitely like that, when clicking the image button, instead of having to click in the middle of the brackets to paste a link (if you happen to have moved the cursor), a dialog box opens up making it much easier to use, especially on mobile.
Title: Re: NEW features
Post by: formulanone on March 26, 2024, 03:23:43 PM
Search lets you pick and choose which sub-forums you'd like to search. You can also pick from results by the largest/smallest topics or the most/least-recent topics. Not sure how the "relevance" works...same as before?

Searches used to be hierarchical; searching from the main page of the forum searched everywhere, searching in a sub-forum only picked results from that section, and searching within a thread showed results just inside that particular thread. Unfortunately, the last feature is missing from this update.

Probably intentional, rich text causes quite a few security issues on SMF.

That's actually good thing IMO. There was too much discussion of users' ages before.

I am also a fan of the quick edit, which I'm using to add: I liked the green background for roadgeek vibes, but prefer the new background for browsing in public or semi-public spaces, as it looks more like other forums or a generic web page, and stands out less.

I do not like the quick reply appearing at the bottom of each page for the same reason: the en masse emojis are ugly and and make it very obvious that you're on a message board.

Wow. Love the quick reply interface. However, not much of a fan of stuff like avatars not appearing. That makes it a bit tougher to identify people in threads. And it sucks that the theme has reverted to the default, though I understand that it would have to be rebuilt from scratch.

Dang, I was not expecting this today! But I'm pleasantly surprised. Weird to see the old theme that I've gotten used to for over a decade gone though. Hopefully we can get a BGS theme going again in the future.

I actually don't mind this new setup for now, if they're planning on rebuilding the old theme and adding back profile pictures. It's just weird to navigate for me, since I was so used to the old layout, which did bug out sometimes on my phone when I opened it, causing text to shrink. I'll learn it one way or another though.

Ah, that makes more sense. I was away from my computer when making that observation, so I assumed that was the way it was universally. It does look much more compact on mobile devices, so kudos to that I guess.

The font used for in-progress replies (like this one I'm actively writing) is an improvement over the old one as well. It looks like some sort of serif Ubuntu or something?

Oh, it turns out you can! The setting "WYSIWYG" is within your account/profile settings, but turned off by default. This is nice, as I don't think this was in use with the older version.

On an unrelated note, it seems the update also reset the time zone settings. I had to change mine back, so if you are noticing time stamps being off, check your settings.

Okay, browsing/posting from mobile and I am getting NO theme, just plain text - regardless of login status. Looks weird as hell. However guessing it's something to do with my mobile browser's (Brave, in my case) ad/tracker blocker, since the default theme reappeared once I turned it off.

Edit: Or maybe it was just one of those weird momentary code gremlins, since it shows up now.

At least there isn't an overall Like count for each profile that I've found. It's just on a per-post basis. That should keep things reasonable.

On an unrelated note, while we're in this whole new forum process, is it possible to put more emotes away under the More button? I'm thinking about some of the rarely used emotes, such as...

There used to be a little "NEW" icon next to each post that was new since the last time I had viewed a thread. I don't see that anymore. Is that something that can be brought back in some way (or is there a setting I need to change on my end to make that happen)?

Thanks!

I'm still seeing it. Even on mobile, which has been streamlined.

I thought the mods/admins didn't have it before was the thought that it would create a popularity contest.

I think that's why they previously didn't. I don't really see that as being an issue here. Most members are old enough to not make a big deal about likes.

We had a thread around ten years ago regarding whether there ought to be a "like post" button. The sentiment was largely that it wasn't needed.

https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=11356.0

The comments I made back then continue to reflect my overall feeling about that sort of thing, so I'll simply quote what I said in 2014:

Quote from: 1995hoo on January 14, 2014, 09:43:23 AMI really don't like the idea of a "dislike" button. I think if you disagree with someone's comment enough to be motivated to give some indication of it, you should give a reason why you feel that way (preferably more than just "yawn" or "fuck you," but then, if someone posts that sort of reply, it just damages his own credibility).

I don't really see much reason for "like" or "dislike" buttons because I don't think it's hard to assess the value of a post. It's sort of like perusing the reviews on Amazon.com when considering whether to buy a product. They do let people vote on whether reviews are helpful, but I don't need the vote count because I think it's easy to determine which reviews are useful and which are written by grade-school kids as a school assignment. Plus, the people who vote something helpful might be doing so for reasons that are of little interest to you (an example might be if somebody's review focuses on why a stereo component is convenient to operate but doesn't discuss sound quality—if your focus is on the sound, that review won't help you).

It's interesting that the gender marker moved from text to the Mars/Venus symbol, when Wikipedia moved away from that symbol to text a year or two ago. (I would prefer it switched back; not everyone knows what those symbols mean.)

Still no nonbinary option, though...

If you're on a computer, there's a little thing at the top left that says "Alerts". I saw some "notifications" in there telling me that people quoted me in threads yesterday. That might be where the @ notifications live.

I also like that the entire thread is now visible when typing a post, instead of just recent replies. That makes it a lot easier to insert multiple quotes as I did just now. Previously that required juggling multiple tabs.

Is there an estimate to how long it will take to restore the old forum theme? A week, a month, maybe more?

I was also going to request a temporary theme with a dark background and the new message tags turned back on, to be applied while the real forum theme is under reconstruction, but if that isn't a priority then I'm fine with what we have now.

I have it set up (by default, I assume) to give me an alert when I have a mention. When I click alerts at the top, I do see it there. That said, I would have assumed that it would do something similar to "My Messages" and put a count of "unread" alerts that I have next to the word Alerts and put the word in bold or something.

No ETA, as all the settings are different from the previous branch of SMF that we were on.  So will take some trial and error to get stuff to work right.

Several years ago, to my surprise, I got made an Admin of a new forum that was replacing one (which I was never involved with on the Admin side of things) that had just got shut down.  In setting up that forum (which did not port over ANY of the content from the other one) I went out of my way to make a Theme that tried to mimic the feel of the previous forum.  However I never promoted it, I just put it into the settings and hoped people might find it if they cared to look for it.  A few people did, but while I still have Admin status there, I have moved on from that topic and seldom look at that forum any more.  I just checked and it looks like I'm the only person still using that Theme.  *sigh*

Now having said that,  you might expect that when this revision of the AA forum finished the other day, the first thing I looked for was some kind of alternate display theme.

Something else I had done when setting up that forum was that I eradicated their default emoticon library and replaced it with a much less manic version.  Not that I really use emoticons that often any more.    (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmembers.trainorders.com%2Fandroid%2Ftemp%2Ficon_ungood-w.gif&hash=2289198a7ece965f795d1cddcdc05805d3dbd92a)

How come I looked at thazt page several times and never saw that line there before?   :paranoid:

Same here, w/r/t formatting tags:  I always just type them manually.  I never use the actual icons for that.  But I can never remember which emoticon corresponds to which emoji/sticker.  So yeah, that is nice to have in the 'quick reply' box, not just after clicking [PREVIEW].  Of course, I almost always am only using a smiley if I'm quoting someone else's post, and I always click [PREVIEW] when quoting, to make sure nothing went awry...

Am I missing something?  Where is this quick reply of which you speak?

For me, right below the last post in a thread.

Oh!  The huge section at the bottom of each page!  Wasn't that always there?

I thought so, too.

It was, but it wasn't as fleshed out, the buttons for various things (like the embeds and things like bolding text) and smilies weren't there.

For bolding and such, I find it just as easy to just type the tags. Smilies are nice though.

Same, though sometimes going through and adding a URL (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ) is easier with the button around selected text, especially if I didn't already have the link I'm using at the ready. ;-)

As a side note, I think "quick edit" had been an option with the older software, but the button for it was less prominent.

Fun fact: quotes actually render correctly in rich text view, which can be toggled from quick reply (although the button is instead labeled as the default-on "source view").

I don't like it that the subject doesn't show up on every post anymore.  Often, I click on a topic, then do something else on the other monitor, then look back and forget what topic I'd clicked on.  It was nice to see it without having to scroll all the way to the top.

Not an ideal solution, but if you hover the mouse pointer over the timestamp of a message, the subject shows up in the tooltip text.

I'm testing now if titles can still be changed for a single post, viewable by hovering as described. (I changed it on this post, so you can test on mine.)

Good to know we can at least still hover to see individual title posts. It would be nice to see it brought back like it used to be though, if it's still an option in SMF.

Is anybody else having problems with viewing tables? Ever since the update, tables on threads like "Lowest-numbered Route You Haven't Been On" have been completely broken. An absurd amount of space is inserted before the location of the table, and the table is completely stripped of rows and columns. Here's what I'm talking about:

Search is broken, which is super annoying when trying to find if I already posted something in Road Sign UNO.

This isn't happening with all tables.

I wonder what's up with Rothman's tables that they end up with that giant amount of white space in front of them.

I'm on Chrome on both by desktop and phone and am not seeing a "white space" issue with the tables in the lowest numbered thread.

But, I am also not seeing a table in jlam's post in here...  Looks like he's using img tags, but just with an URL?

ETA:  Oh wait, looks like it happened on some earlier tables for some reason.  The BBCode's the same in the posts, so...whatever.  Forum's problem, not mine. :D

Old feature to bring back: marking a message as "New" or "Unread" after you click on the topic. It's nice that it brings you to the first unread message, but nothing marks read vs. unread messages after that as you scroll.

There's a 'Mark Unread' button at the bottom beside the 'Print' button.

It looks like it was hosted on a page on the AARoads website but got discontinued/archived. Said image likely exists elsewhere.

Because your signature image was in the 'old' gallery.  That info wasn't ported over when repairing the database.

Whenever I post something in a thread, I've noticed that it automatically adds it to my watchlist. It remains on the list unless I manually go in and remove it.

However, if I remove the thread from my watchlist once (like this one), it doesn't return to the list.

To prevent threads from automatically being added to your 'watchlist', do the following:

Profile -> Notifications -> unclick the button for "Follow topics I create and reply to" -> Click the 'Save Settings' button at the bottom of that page.

Love having the "NEW" label back, thank you rickmastfan67.

I've noticed that profile picture limits have changed, my fingerpost profile picture (which I've used for like 10+ years now) is much smaller than it used to be. The horizontal limit is the same as before, 150px, but the display size is about half that (or less).

+1 for the new "alerts" feature. It's really handy to know when your posts have been quoted, and fun to see when you've been "liked". And +1 for the like feature itself? To my knowledge it's been serving its intended purpose without being abused or creating drama, so I'd call that a success.
