post your flickr start page here if you'd like to be inter-connected with other roadgeeks who have accounts over there.
I will start, as I just created this page.

I have one, but I only upload certain photos:

Aww, these are all "All Rights Reserved". :-(
If you want to share images on the web, don't select that one unless you're doing it for commercial purposes. That way the photos can actually be shared on the web. That's my analogy. :)

that makes sense, thanks! Seeing as I have the huge versions available for download, people can yank 'em all they want. (And if they steal them for commercial purposes, there's a good chance I'll never find out, but that is neither here nor there!)

Well, I never personally put my large versions online. If somebody really wants it, they can contact me and ask me. Depending on what they want it for and if I trust them, usually I'll provide the original version to them. But usually, it's been good friends that ask me, and I have no problems what so ever providing the pics to them as long as I know they aren't going to use them for commercial reasons.

The way I figure it, people who don't want to pay will either steal from me, or steal from someone else. This way, I may get the trickle-down effect of free advertising; otherwise I get nothing at all.

Most are all rights reserved. The road ones are available for use on roadgeeking sites as long as the user lets me know first. Everything else, I generally prefer the user ask me for permission first (per the disclaimer on my profile). Since I'm no longer associated with Wikipedia, I typically don't use licenses that free images up for it.
Close to 260,000 photos, with a few thousand more in the queue!
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dougtone/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dougtone/)
I have a Creative Commons license that just requires attribution. Even though I'm not with Wikipedia, I don't mind my photos, especially of roads or historic buildings, to be used on Wikipedia. My license does allow the photos to be used for commercial purposes as well, meaning that Jake could snag a photo he likes and use that as a template for an old sign he wants to make.
One thing I do need to change on my licensing is specific for any band or event photos that I may take. I think that I may need a little more control over those photos, for the sake of the band or the event organizers.
Also, I would recommend Flickr to everyone here, not just for posting photos, but also to leave comments on other people's photos.

Creative Commons does not restrict you from making separate licensing arrangements. The CC licenses are merely provided as a way to grant users certain permissions without having to go through a lot of communication. As you say, you don't want your work used in certain ways but are permissive of others, so CC tries to simplify some of that. If someone wants to use your work in a way that's restricted by a CC license, he can contact you and you can negotiate a separate license.

One thing that I've read on one of the Flickr groups I'm on is that external websites (through Flickr's API) can still pull images that are "all rights reserved" to display, even though photographers did not want their work to be displayed in that fashion. I've always considered the photos I've been taking lately to be more of a hobby, but I know if I ever turn pro, I'd most likely severely limit any of that work which gets posted online, and even then it would go on a website to promote the business, not on Flickr or any other third-party site.
Wikimedia Commons does a good job explaining copyright stuff on Flickr.
Link: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Flickr_files (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Flickr_files)
Basically, only flickr images with the symbols of a person in a circle or a backwards "C" with an arrow are allowed to be used on commercial sites like Wikipedia.
(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2Fthumb%2F1%2F11%2FCc-by_new_white.svg%2F64px-Cc-by_new_white.svg.png&hash=8c7e5d7d242a27bf57bae0bdaf9f9035a98fe196) (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2Fthumb%2Fd%2Fdf%2FCc-sa_white.svg%2F64px-Cc-sa_white.svg.png&hash=55d7a6473b07070cd364108c37a62ac2b3ffe5c2)

My analogy is if you're uploading stuff to the net, you're releasing all rights anyways because everyone can see it, so you may as well deselect "all rights reserved". That won't stop someone from copying your image or taking a screenshot of it.

What do y'all use for tagging highways in your pictures? I tend to use lowercase with no space or dash, e.g. i635, us26, ct2.
Perhaps that could be improved, and we could agree on a tag convention that helps us find all photos (at least from our sets) for a given highway.

exactly. I might not even change it from "all rights reserved". If you're going to take one of my pictures for your own personal use,
I am not ever going to find out! So just go ahead and do it!
"All rights reserved" hopefully will entice the more honest to simply ask me for permission, as opposed to all that Creative Commons verbiage, which will likely entice people to say "tl;dr" and move on to the next potential image to use.

True, it's really how you look at it. Net neutrality isn't exactly as neutral as it seems as people tend to lean one way or another.
In the perfect internet utopia, anyone would be able to do whatever they want. In the real world we have things like passwords and licensing agreements to prevent others from accessing our digital beings, committing financial or identity theft. It doesn't
always work, but it is a good safeguard next to no protection at all.
You make a good point, you could always contact the creator. It may not be as fast as simply grabbing it, but it's the more, shall I say, humane thing to do.
-Problem is if the author never contacts you, or if they say no. But that's life I guess.

19000 photos is crazy. Doug's over 200000 is even more crazy!
I think I've processed and posted maybe 2000 photos in my life.
I think it depends on how one photographs. Some people only take pictures that highlight the highway, others try to document the entire road, and take a picture of every single sign and situation. I do the latter, and I average approximately one photo per freeway kilometer (or ~ half a mile), depending on exit density.

I think that covers it well, although I cover more than just roads on mine, which has 32,701 photos on it. I do work to cover the following:
Train stations, roads, my hometown, parts of the history around the region, and the Raritan Arsenal (a project of mine).

sometimes I go several hours without taking a photo, if there are no old signs or interesting sights. And of the ones I do take, I discard a lot ("hmm, another random button copy sign that isn't sufficiently different from the last one to warrant mention", "one of these five should come out not blurry", etc)

It really is to each ones own. I'll stop and walk around and explore places vs. wanting to drive endlessly. I usually enjoy a short four hour trip in my own backyard over driving 15-20 hours in one day. I'd also say in my own and Doug's case there are more than just roads or signs. It does appear those in this forum will use flickr more for the hobby (roadsigns etc) than a general photographic interest. I've enjoyed flickr more on the photography side as I have made great contacts and learned a lot either from talking to them or seeing their work.

I have about 260,000 photos posted on Flickr, plus about another 6,000 photos in the queue from the past couple months that I haven't posted yet. Not all of these photos are road-related, but there's plenty to see, especially here in the Northeast. Currently, I am uploading some photos from a recent trip to Maine.
Here's another thing worth mentioning regarding Flickr. There are also a number of groups that are for roads and signs on Flickr, including groups for New England, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina, Michigan, Canada and Oregon. Basically, these groups are for displaying some of your best photos for others in the group. Some of these groups also have an ongoing scavenger hunt contest.
My page is at the bottom of posts currently, but, of course, that may change.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/mightyace
There are currently over 600 items, most of them roads.
I default to "all rights reserved", but as other have said, there's not much that you can do to keep someone from taking it. If I am truly concerned about persevering the rights of a photo, I simply won't post it.
My collection is here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/steelyankee/ I'm happy to have my pictures used, especially if you let me know and give me credit. I consider it an honor.

my flickr page definitely has less road-sign-oriented content than the AARoads blog. I think I have maybe four photos tagged "highway sign", which is somewhat less than what is tagged "purple", "snow", or "northern lights".

I use uppercase, with a dash for Interstates and a space for US/state/county routes. I also include the state (typed out), county (i.e. Fairfax County), and (if applicable) nearby town/locality.

I tend to spell it out so that search engines will bite better (hopefully!). "us highway 2", "interstate highway 90", etc. I tend not to label state or provincial routes. For Canada I use "transcanada route 1" and for Mexico routes I use "mexico highway 5" as opposed to, say, "mexico federal highway 5".
Also if the highway has a prominent name ("alaska highway") I use that.
and flickr's tags are case-insensitive. they are automatically converted to lowercase for internal and display purposes regardless of the case in which you enter them.

Started off with a few New York shots tonight, and will probably upload more from other states within the next few days.
I'm on the verge of breaking 200 photos and will probably get a Pro account soon. I just want to know how you guys take pictures while driving at the same time. I'm getting sick of having one hand on the wheel and trying to balance a camera in the other trying to get a good shot and to not get the reflection of the dashboard in the picture. I'm getting better and better at this technique, but obviously it isn't the safest thing in the world. So, do you guys recommend any mounting equipment or something to that effect where I can take good quality photos without getting in a crash?

Most of my photos I stop and take the photo. If I'm driving, I slow down. I also take multiple/repeating shots and save the best one.
I don't recommend this. I have a suction cup monopod, but don't have a way to remotely take a photo.
You may also consider a black cloth across your dashboard to cut down on the reflection. Preferably a fabric that isn't shiny, like cotton or a cotton blend (or an old bath towel).
Addendum:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Sunpak+-+Suction+Cup+Monopod/8345622.p?id=1176506228750&skuId=8345622&st=camera%20monopod&cp=1&lp=3
I use a black t-shirt to block the reflections.
I bought black dash mats from JC Whitney for my vehicles. Not only do they cut down on glare, but they help preserve and protect the dashboard from cracking.
As for taking photos while driving, it's an acquired skill. Years ago I was managing a Minolta 35mm camera with a 150 mm telephoto lens to take pics. I wouldn't try that now. I just use the viewscreen on my digital cameras to take the picture.
You can buy some mounts that will clip or clamp to various surfaces. I have my video camera mounted to the overhang on my instrument panel. You could try this with your digital still camera and then just reach up and push the button when you want to take a photo.
Thanks for the advice. Shoulda realized something as simple as a black shirt could cut down on the reflection. Now if only I could get myself a better camera...

One thing I found with flickr is that they took off their direct links to the raw images - I have reservations about what they call "Community Guidelines" being interpreted as "law/policy" in that you must provide a link back to the image's main page if you hotlink it. It interferes with my easy method of inserting images into my blog :pan:

Flickr doesn't really enforce that very well, though. I had a photo "borrowed" a few months ago without my permission and when I complained, they all but said "not our problem"
I hotlinked a Flickr photo here not too long ago.
Kinda like this...
(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm6.static.flickr.com%2F5210%2F5356607160_77b3990e48_z.jpg&hash=9e31808e97c66ba333dc8aa0daf61e5f2173bac1)
(URL is http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5210/5356607160_77b3990e48_z.jpg)
Flickr doesn't stop you from hotlinking, they just make it inconvenient. It's still easy enough, though.
I didn't have any trouble at all hotlinking.
1. Went to my Flickr page, went to my photoset, clicked on the thumbnail.
2. Ctrl-clicked on the photo displayed on the resulting page (I have a Mac), which brought up a dialogue box saying "View all sizes.." with a few choices.
3. Clicked on one of the choices available.
4. Ctrl-clicked on the image displayed on the resulting page (again, I have a Mac) and chose the "Open image in new window" option that came up in Safari (Firefox gives a similar option).
5. Copied the image's URL and pasted into the "image" option in my post here.
Alternately, the Ctrl-click in step 4 above gives the option to "copy image address" in Safari, which can then be pasted in to the "image" option here.
Pretty quick and painless. Not difficult at all.
1) Alternatively, you can click on Share This which will show a list of options.
2) Click on Grab the HTML/BBCode
3) Select the size you want from the dropdown list
4) Select HTML (general pages) or BBCode (forums like this) and it will give you ready to go code that you can cut and paste.

That gives you a link to the page on which the image is contained, doesn't it? And not the image itself?
No, it gives the image itself, at least for the BBCode. I've been using it for all my recent image posts.
For example, the BBCode to show the image below was pasted directly into the post reply box:

That gives the link to the Flickr page, which is not something I'm crazy about doing. And it won't fit in the IMG tag, either.
^^^
That's your prerogative, of course.
If I was linking images on a website of my own, I probably wouldn't use it either. But, for here, the simple cut and paste works for me and I don't care about the link.
And, in any case, I was putting it out as general information, as some other people might want a quick and dirty way to do it as another option.
I was in Oregon earlier this month for family reasons. While I didn't have a lot of extra time to explore and drive around, I was able to fit in some exploring and roadgeeking while running errands or dropping family off at the airport, and managed to get some photos from the Salem and Portland areas, and plenty of places in between around the Willamette Valley. Today, I was able to upload the photos from the trip onto my Flickr account. Check them out (and other road photos too) by following the links below...

Let me ask you guys...what would the advantage of Flickr be compare to Photobucket, where I keep my albums on?

Let me ask you guys...what would the advantage of Flickr be compare to Photobucket, where I keep my albums on?
For one, Flickr will preserve the original size of any photo you upload while the same cannot be said for Photobucket. There's also a much cleaner look on Flickr's website. Given that, I'll still use Photobucket to host images that aren't photos simply because I don't like to pollute my Flickr stream with non-photos. There should be several reasons given upthread why others have taken to using Flickr, so you may want to re-read those posts.
I use flickr to upload temporary/throwaway things that have no place on a legitimate website. I much prefer a website to organize things in a precise way. Flickr still doesn't have that capability - albums get thrown together by date.
Well, the advice you guys gave was great. It's really helped with getting that pesky glare and reflection from my dash out of my photos. Now my biggest issue is lighting... I can't head south or west in the afternoon; otherwise, the sun's pointing at me and everything gets washed out. I think once summer comes around the higher sun angle will mitigate this though.

If you do not mind shooting during cloudy days, you can mitigate the afternoon sunshine in the west or southbound direction by photographing on overcast days. This gives you an option until the sun angle becomes more conducive for better shooting conditions after noon.
I feel like I'm a little late to this party, but what the hey. I'm sure none of you care about photos of my dog and things like that, so here's a shortcut straight to my collection of road photos. Lots of photos of state and US highways, especially old and abandoned alignments.

Quotealbums get thrown together by date.
By default, yes. But that's easily changed with some clicking and dragging.

I started it a few days ago with a first batch of pictures from QC-138, A-30, QC-132 and A-10. It doesn't contain a lot of stuff as of right now, and it certainly doesn't contain any real good pictures... but that's a beginning I guess.

The one thing I hate about Flickr is that you gotta pay to have a resolution higher than 1024x768.
Luckily Wikimedia Commons allows you to upload any size for free! See the full size here as an example:

Just wanted to let anyone who's interested know that I've added scores of New Jersey photos to my Flickr account from a recent trip I made around the Garden State. There's some pictures from the recent Northern New Jersey road meet, a jaunt around South Jersey and more! Abandoned roads, cool old shields, even older bridges and even AAA signage adorn the photo collection.
Check it out at...

Next on the agenda, some photos from Central New York State, plus wherever the open road takes me this weekend.
I just tried to upload a new flickr photo on another thread, and it didn't work.
I've been uploading a lot of road photos lately. My most recent offerings come from Pennsylvania and New Jersey. I took a nice trip around PA over Easter weekend, getting photos from southeastern and central PA. Also took a trip last weekend around the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, both in PA and NJ. Enjoy the photos!

I've uploaded photos of new (December 2009) I-80 signage through Salt Lake City, as well as more three-digit state highway shield weirdness in Tooele. UDOT (and/or its contractors) cannot make up its mind! SR-201 through western Salt Lake as well.

A Parish Route shield in Houma, LA. It is unusual to see a traditional blue and gold county route shield with a "PARISH" name in it, but Louisiana has parishes instead of counties. It would make sense for this, but nonetheless found it interesting to shoot.

Just to let you know that I have uploaded some new construction photos of the under construction interchange of TOLL Roads FL 414 and FL 429 near Apopka, FL. This will allow for continuation of FL 414 as well as turning in the northern one mile of FL 429 into a spur of FL 414 re- numbered TOLL FL 451. FL 429 will be realigned so that it will be a directional interchange (not seen in photos) to the west of this construction and both 414 and 429 will run concurrent into the proposed Wekiva Parkway.
I've uploaded new road photos from a trip into Washington State this summer onto my Flickr account. Enjoy some new photos from Seattle and the Olympic Peninsula, along with some old favorites around the Evergreen State.

Photos from my trip to Watertown, NY are up on my Flickr page (four sets covering four days):

Just photos for now, no commentary. Once the commentary is done and I get links to my EveryTrail tracks done, it'll all be available on the Millennium Highway roadtrips page.
During my recent move, one of the things that that I turned up was a box of photos and negatives taken with my old 35mm camera during the late 1990s. Another thing I turned up was a negative scanner. Put two and two together and you have a set of photos on Flickr:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/hbelkins/sets/72157627627216365/
These are mostly older signs that have been replaced, unusual signs and sign goofs. Most of them are already on my Web site in various places but these are fresh scans, all in one place.
Some of these will definitely qualify for "best of road signs," "worst of road signs" and "signage goofs" threads here.
excellent - an actual in-the-field photo of '57 spec Kentucky I-65. right now all the shield gallery had was a mockup of that particular route number and state.
Those were taken in Mammoth Cave National Park. There were a lot of old I-75 shields in the Richmond area that looked similar, but of course I was too young to know I should have gotten my dad to stop and let me take a picture of them when we went through there when I was a kid.

if they're in a National Park, those shields might still be around. sometimes jurisdiction changes like that cause shields to survive a lot longer than they should. for example, the last known MINNESOTA/US shield is at the exit of a state park.

It's mostly California signs, with a couple from Maine. Enjoy!
Just finished uploading my road photos from Maine that were sitting on my computer since my trip up there in July. All geotagged and everything!

Some goodies on my Flickr page today.
Pics from all four days of my trip to the Richmond, Va. meet (including my meet tour photos) and a whole bunch of pictures from 2000 that I found over the weekend.
There are some jewels in that bunch of photos: some Indiana and Missouri button copy that's been replaced; an Indiana state-named I-64 shield; various photos of construction, bridges and tunnels; a few sign goofs, ugly signs (candidates for the "worst of..." thread) and sine salad; and a lot of signs that have since been replaced.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/hbelkins/sets/
All great pictures, HB. Especially the Richmond trip stuff. Makes me wish I had gone to that one.

My photos from a June 2001 trip to Missouri and Arkansas. I thought I had lost the photos from the second day of the trip, but I found them on the same DVD as the old photos referenced above. Hello everyone,
Fairly new poster here. I have started a flickr account for road-related photos:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/88645322@N03/
I just put up my first road photoset from a driving trip last week, and a couple months ago I posted some hypothetical road pictures as posted in the Fictional Highways section.
Some new Flickr entries...

These are various photos from around Kentucky the last six months of 2012, plus some of the new US 52 segment in Mingo County, WV, with new signage for the WV 44 extension.

Last time I was up there, which was back in the fall as depicted in those photos, the new section between WV 65 and the WV 44 extension was signed as US 52. However, there was no signage at the US 52/WV 65 intersection routing US 52 onto WV 65 up the mountain to the new road.
That may have changed since those pictures were taken, but unfortunately I don't know when I will be back up that way to verify.

I just posted some new I-45 in Texas photos on my flickr page. I have many photos from Dallas to Galveston, however it was dark when traveling through Houston, so I only got two shots while stuck in traffic on the Gulf Freeway. I still hate the new instagram-esque style, though.

I don't mind the new flickr interface. It's like with every design change someone's not going to like it.
Anyways, some photos from various trips in April.

it's significantly slower, burns a lot more memory, and defaults to placing things unintuitively past the first page. one should not have to explicitly scroll down to read the caption of an image.
also, infinite scroll of search results. I know this has become popular recently, but it definitely weirds me out. I think it's because the way I search is to look at the first page of results, right click and open in a new tab all the ones which I think need further investigation, and then have the final right-click-and-new-tab be the next page of results. with infinite scroll, one loses this ability to have "browse results" and "look at details" be elegantly dovetailed.

also, infinite scroll of search results.
There were days when I'd go onto flickr, type in some search terms (e.g. "NJ" OR "New jersey" AND (road OR route)) and spend the day looking through the tens of thousands of photos people took of Jersey's roads. This was also good since I can set up "marker dates" to save where I was and come back later in addition to filtering out the people with millions of auto-tagged photos. With the new format, I can't do that anymore. (note I don't have a flickr account so I guess it's harder to lodge a complaint to them)

is that what the new view is optimized for? a taller-than-wide browser window?

Tough call - i'm guessing they're siding with people who want to see more of a photo - prefer the black backgroun vs. space taken up by captions and what groups they are in, who favorited, comments, etc.
I am sure in a year there will be another reformat.

"who favorited" is an exercise in solipsistic dick-sucking, and the comments on flickr tend to be equally self-indulgent... but I still want to read the original caption!

Probably. Though I note they have fixed it so navigation is at the bottom of the window rather than on the next one.

Most comments in Flickr are Ivy League dissertations compared to YouTube, which is more of a poorly-organized anarchy rally devised under a cheap-beer moonlit night, at its best.
Oh, they probably did it for tablet/smartphone optimization. It's not that bad, honestly...except tablets are one of the worst mediums for uploading photos, since they take average photos at best, and aren't really good at editing photos. Flickr had the same format since I started with it in 2005. Only Google's been that big, that old, and hasn't changed.

new Flickr also takes up gallons of memory. open up six or seven tabs of image search results, and your Firefox is suddenly running 750MB hotter.

I am glad to hear you say this. I thought is was only me with this new flickr page layout. To me I think it is much harder to manage. The old way was fine, but like everything else when things work fine somebody has to improve it with some new crap just to say that we are moving along or that progress is fulfilled.

Try it now, I added the full URL and it seems to work fine for me. I have more Dothan stuff to add to the set as well, it is already on my flickr page just not in the set. One bad thing about flickr is it is not the best for managing photos as it is all done with the dates it was uploaded, so you cannot change the order to keep you photos together except for the sets which even then is limited.
Try this one, LED traffic lights, traffic light modules
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ledtrafficlight/
How the hell in new flickr do you get the URL to just the image? I'm trying to post in the forum, but I can't get a URL that doesn't go to the lightroom. :verymad:
Click the x in the upper right corner and the 'lightbox' crap disappears from the URL.

Actually I meant so that the "insert image" feature in the forum works. It used to work every time.
Go to the last link, right click on image, copy URL. If it's set so you can't do that you'll have to go into page properties or source.
This may not work on every browser, but here is a simple way using Chrome:
[1] Find the username and filename for the picture. I'm using one of my own pictures as an example. My username is "ka.pe81" and the filename is "100_1617". Both of these should be visible on the flickr page.

Quoteis that what the new view is optimized for? a taller-than-wide browser window?
Latecomer to this, but I'd expect Flickr's mobile website (http://m.flickr.com) to be the one optimized for smartphones/tablets. Also works for those of us with crappy bandwidth. #LifeAtSea
(yes, I added a hashtag here...get over it)

Both were. They're trying to cater to mobile devices such as iPads and MS Surfaces

Some new photos that I took over the past month of Eastbound FL 528 near Orlando, FL.

Ok, I uploaded quite a few pics. Including, embossed, non-reflective button copy signs from CT & Westchester, NY. My first foray into road signs pics. Whaddya think?
I just use an average iPhone, no fancy camera or anything. I do notice some of the pics come out dark if the sun isn't facing the right direction. Not sure if that's the iPhone or just luck. Although whenever I take pics it seems to be cloudy.
Let me know what you think. Thanks!

I like them. Nice work - I live in the area that you covered in these pics so I think it's a good representation.

is there a way to revert Flickr's arterial-bleeding new interface? I can scroll maybe three screen heights down before the whole thing is occupying 1GB more memory and my browser crashes.

my photo is from August, 2006. the US shield is 1948 spec (adopted by New York in 1955) has had the border painted in to bring it to 1961 spec. the state shield is 1961 spec, and thus 1962 or newer.

I like the "ROUGH ROAD" sign with the orange flags. Especially since the pavement behind it looks pretty smooth. Did the pavement drop off beyond that point?
No. IIRC, there had been a culvert replacement there and it had been patched with cold mix and not with a final coat of asphalt.

Some new photos that I added from my recent Louisiana trip. I never did get to go to St. Louis as I wanted because my friend weaseled out because somebody got sick in Venezuela! How that got to be the reason, Lord only knows and I mean it literally either and not breaking Commandment number 3. However, I am not going into details about that one and what it means, but ended up staying around SE LA instead, so I got some of these. Enjoy, as if you check back I will be uploading more especially around Baton Rouge soon.
very nice. been a few weeks/months since I've seen clear blue skies like that in the Boston area :wow:
Most of my photos are architecture-related, but a few are road-related, so I'll share mine for anyone who's interested: http://www.flickr.com/photos/94235698@N03/

Just added some more photos to my I-10 in LA set. I pretty much have WB I-10 covered from Kenner to the Mississippi River with a few signs missed. Nonetheless, I have most interchanges covered, however sorry about my friend's windshield as it needed cleaning real badly and some spots are noticeable especially at I-110 in Baton Rouge.
nice photos, thanks for the update!
http://www.flickr.com/photos/54480415@N08/sets/72157635265627400/ Another update to my flickr of my September 12 trip to Louisiana. This set includes pictures from around Shreveport, LA.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/54480415@N08/sets/72157640186621395/ I now have new photos to my 13 Houma Trip gallery including some neat patch job green shields for LA 24 on LA 3040 SPUR. I have total of 20 in the set, so check out.
nice, thanks for the update!
You must have lucked up with I-10 Miss. river bridge. Traffic is usually a disaster there!

While cleaning out my computer's hard drive, I found a few more negative scans from the late 1990s. There are only 28 photos in this set, but there are some old signs that have long since been replaced in Kentucky and West Virginia. I've also got some photos of the Linn Cove Viaduct on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

I have a lot of I-310 pictures that I have added to my LA 13 Trip flickr page that are now up. Sorry I did not get photos of the Hale Boggs Bridge because I took time to make a video on you tube of it while photographing these.
Plus I added some US 90 photos since the last time as well.

Got my photos from my trips to the Hampton Roads/Delmarva and Lebanon, Tenn. meets posted.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/hbelkins/sets/72157644343827396/
Day 1 of the trip -- from home to Hampton Roads. Includes some shots of US 311 in Virginia. The corridor is basically US 23, Alternate US 58, I-81, I-77, US 58 (with a slight detour for US 311), I-85, I-95, US 158 and US 258.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/hbelkins/sets/72157644403737064/
Day 2 -- the Hampton Roads meet and some photos from my efforts to clinch US 13 and US 258 in Virginia.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/hbelkins/sets/72157644529782895/
Day 3 -- the trip up to Salisbury, where I only lunched with everyone before I departed, then across US 50, down I-95 and various routes through Richmond to get to US 360 and then over to US 460 to Farmville.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/hbelkins/sets/72157644133393839/
Day 4 -- this is basically the US 460 corridor (US 221 between Lynchburg and Bedford) with a little bit of I-81 across Virginia and the southern tip of West Virginia, into Kentucky. I didn't get to explore Bluefield like I wanted to but still got some of the odd signage there.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/hbelkins/sets/72157644164687040/
Day 1 of the Tennessee trip. Pretty much US 127, TN 111, I-40 and US 70N between Albany, Ky. and Lebanon, Tenn.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/hbelkins/sets/72157644566351082/
Day 2 of the Tennessee trip. Includes meet photos and then the US 31E and Cumberland Parkway corridor, with some photos of the new US 68 bypass of Glasgow, Ky. and some on US 127 north of Russell Springs.
awesome photos! some unique ones in there. this thread is actually one of my favorites
Today, I was examining some of the pictures taken on the Road and Rail Pictures website, primarily for train-station related stuff, but I got distracted by my road interests, and eventually started looking at some of US 1. This one in East Greenwich, Rhode Island is kind of odd. Check out the Shell gas station sign in the picture. Very non-standard:

Wow, London looks beautiful. I want to eventually get to there. Their signs are so much more different than ours too, but they look nice! Great photos and thanks for sharing!

Virginia 360 is a former route of US 360 that really should have been renumbered something else. The extra placards were added to reduce confusion.
I think the confusion lies within what was VDOT thinking when they rendered that one.
Then again we have that in Florida with FL 17 and US 17 intersecting in Haines City, but FDOT does not place those cards on them to show which is which.
Also remember when FL 997 was FL 27 branching off US 27 at the Broward/ Dade County Line. FDOT made the change when motorists indeed were getting confused. so FDOT created FL 997 instead.
I think nowadays people are not aware of the surroundings and what is happening in their own backyard unless its to build an actual roadway. Most people I find do not even know where Winter Park or Winter Garden is anymore who reside here in Greater Orlando. Most people do not even know that Kirkman Road is SR 435 even. Only Semoran Boulevard is called by its number as well as people knowing that SR 50 and Colonial Drive are synonymous. Other than that the arterials in Orlando are known by name rather than numbers. Oops, I forgot OBT is Four Forty One in most minds, heck with the US 17 & 92 shield standing out more than the US 441 shield on assemblies.

Enjoyed those pictures, Will, especially since I was on some of those routes back in the spring when I went to Hampton Roads and the Delmarva Peninsula. I got some of the same photos, too, including the "Interstate 58" restaurant sign.

Thanks. That was my first time down in that area. My job is about to involve some travel so I might see how I can incorporate roadgeeking into it. Maybe I'll have to bring a compact camera along. :)
Yeah will thanks for you posting. I enjoyed that area of VA so much being I probably will not get there in this life, as I do have other roads I need to clinch first.
Went ahead and updated my roads Flickr since I'm using it and posted photos from the trip my girlfriend and I took to Kill Devil Hills, NC. Photos include US 460, US 13/58, VA 168, VA 168 BUSINESS, NC 168, US 158 and more.

Just now saw this thread. When VDOT applied to AASHTO to move US 360 they wanted to leave behind US 360 ALT. This was denied by AASHTO. Not sure why it isn't VA 360 ALT. The "US" and "STATE" banners have been up for only a few years. Most of the time up to then VA 360 was not posted from US 360 WB at the VA 344-360 intersection.

This might be a little bit off-topic for this thread, but does anyone know if there is a script available or other automated way to download a bunch of pictures from a Flickr album? Doing the "right-click/save image as..." dance for several dozen pictures is going to get very old after awhile, and I've been tasked with trying to download a bunch of pictures from a Flickr page.
UPDATE: I found a plugin for Chrome that does the trick nicely.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/54480415@N08/sets/72157634118701383 I just added some more photos of Alabama to my flickr. I even have the US 90 and US 31 intersection signage including an END assembly where US 31 finally comes to rest after its long 5 state journey. I also have two diagramical signs for I-65 in Mobile along I-10 Westbound as well as some other signs in Baldwin County to the East of the Mobile Bay.

Many of the town's signs seem to be in this font (looks like Franklin Gothic): http://goo.gl/maps/GGD8F
A pretty rotten sine salad that should be posted in worst, in my opinion.
Some of the people actually like this assembly and some hate it. It is one of those things that can go either way like modern art. I had someone over a gribblenation.com say it was cool and then Alps once said "its an abomination."
Incidentally, most of Cullman, AL uses this font I was told.

I see now if you edit your flickr photos in the aviary, it loses its image here on the forum. I just cropped some photos and now the image of the photo is gone and message displayed as PHOTO NO LONGER AVAILABLE.

PS, the trip cost me a speeding ticket in DE.
After a visit during late August to the Scandinavian countries as well as some other countries that border the Baltic Sea, I'm finally able to post some of the road related photos to Flickr from the trip that took me to Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Norway, Russia and Sweden (also France and The Netherlands if you include airport layovers). Some of the photos were taken on foot, while I was subject to the mercy of tour buses and hop-on/hop-off buses for other photos. I hope that you'll enjoy and feel free to include some input, since I don't have quite the knowledge of the roads on the other side of the pond as I do in the States.
The first installment in this series takes us to Oslo, Norway. Enjoy!

My photos I take from my iPhone 6s. (nothing spectacular) but on Flickr on my phone they fit nice but on a computer they look narrow and small.

I refuse to use a smartphone, so I always look at Flickr on my PC. I just upload the images from my hard drive, and when I view them on Flickr, they look exactly as they should.
I use a PC to access flickr whenever I can. The only time I use flickr on my phone is when I'm uploading a photo from the phone itself...or if it's my only choice since I'm working out in the field somewhere

Over 20 photos in all as some are from other parts of the state. Hopefully soon it will be more as I have plenty that I took from a road trip out there last year. Enjoy!

Catching up with my Flickr uploads, so I've got a bunch of stuff posted as of today.
- EDIT/ADDENDUM: Photos from my October trip to the Birmingham meet via Indiana and western Kentucky
- Photos from my November trip to Michigan for the Battle Creek meet and my journey down US 33 and into West Virginia afterwards
- Photos from my December trip to Bloomington, Ind., via Evansville and new I-69 to meet Lil Bub
- A trip last week across Northern Kentucky to clinch routes (KY 10, KY 14 and KY 53) and to drive the new East End Bridge

Since there were no wrong-way concurrency groups out there on Flickr, I created one.

Finally created an account for myself. I have a lot of stuff on there already but I'll be getting pretty much all my good stuff on there eventually since the site seems to retain photos at the original size which is great for web based storage:

Don't have a flickr account but do occasionally browse the site. I happened to notice that some user uploaded a photo that I took and uploaded to Wikimedia Commons (which I did not publish under public domain) without proper attribution. There's no way I can directly flag the specific photo as a non-user, going to Yahoo's copyright flagging page either requires me to log into my Yahoo account (which doesn't exist) or email them separately. Is there a way a Yahoo user can flag a specific photo as infringement despite not being the original copyright holder?
Can PM me to get specific details. Thanks in advance.

So basically: Your photo was stolen, uploaded to Flickr, given a new license, then uploaded to Wikimedia Commons (with the idea it has a "free" license)?
There are bots and people which upload Flickr photos with the right Creative Commons / Public Domain attributions. You'd have to lodge a complaint with Wikimedia Commons; they would be happy to remove a non-free photo, though I think just getting hold of an administrator would get it swiftly removed (or at least flagged for deletion).
After that, a Flickr user might have the case to to present to a Flickr admin.

Usually trucks are not allowed. However, trucks are temporarily allowed on Legacy if there is a major accident on I-15. In this case, the electronic sign changes to a green circle around the truck picture.

^ Probably depends on the size of the image. A 24 megapixel image with 6,000 horizontal by 4,000 vertical pixels is going to be able to be zoomed in much more than say a phone image, which might only have 3,000 horizontal by 2,000 vertical pixels.

Otherwise I'm content to post new material over on FB.
I guess I'll start trimming content on the Flickr account.

Yep, with attribution. It's a big turn off for a lot of people (who don't want commercial re-use), but generally it doesn't spread beyond clickbait lists and the occasional interesting website. I've had a few of my photos printed in materials that were sent to me by their publishers...which felt pretty neat.

That isn't too bad then so long as you get a credit. I left a Facebook group over someone snipping one of my Flickr photos and not giving a source credit. I had someone request to use my US 1/FL 4a maps in an online book which I was happy to do for free with a source credit.
People use unattributed photos all the time. I think the only true way to stop people from using unattributed photos is to not share them to the internet. Unfortunately (imho), people seem to think that once something is uploaded to the internet that it belongs to everyone.
I am fully okay with others using my photos, as long as they don't claim it's theirs.
I will ask for payment if someone requests using a photo for commercial use. I don't really like seeing my photos distributed elsewhere on the internet, because then if someone wishes to use them commercially they're less likely to ask me if they find them somewhere that isn't on my website.
Though, that said, I've had so few photos used commercially that it probably doesn't really matter anyways.

In the case of the US 1/FL4a maps I described above I was also given a free download copy of the book. It was by the Pigeon Key Foundation so it was more of an honor for me that they asked for my help in making their Overseas Highway history book. I've never had much expectation that anything I do road related will yield some sort of monetary value, for the most part I do the things I do (photos included) because they are fun and worthwhile for me to do.
Oh yeah, I take photos for fun too, but I take the stance that if someone wants to use my work in something they plan to make money on, I should make money on that too.

When was the last time you clicked on an ad?
Multiply that by hundreds of thousands of people, and the companies simply aren't going to pay a lot of money to a website to have their ad ignored.

I'm using a service called SOS Online, which I bought the last time my computer crashed. I was very thankful that the repair store I took it to saved my pics, but that taught me I needed something else. Thankfully I purchased the account back when it was unlimited free forever. They've since converted to a yearly pricing plan, and they've told me several times that I need to update my account or I'll lose my account, but that's never happened.
There's also Google Photos, which is free.

As long as the photo isn't used in a malicious way, it's not really something to get all upset about. Heck, all the GSV photos, Google Map photos, etc used on here are property of Google, yet I don't see many going out of their way to inform others of the source.
And if someone manages to find their photo on a website somewhere, just imagine how many other places it may have been used without the original creator knowing!

I should note that I'm referring to non-profit organizations which has been what I've dealt exclusively up to this point. To that end they are much more interested in historical context then they are so much more photography. In the case of the Pigeon Key Foundation I had made some simple map illustrations showing the difference in the alignments of the Florida 4a version of the 1928 Overseas Highway compared to the US 1 version that is now in use. Had someone wanted privately fund a book they would make a profit off of then I would request to be compensated in some way.
I started using Flickr because it was easier than trying to do web pages and uploading them to a provider. I may end up letting my Pro account expire, since the cost is going to double, and just use Facebook. At least it's still free, and pages are publicly viewable to anyone. The only reason I pay is to share my pics with roadgeeks, and I'm beginning to wonder if it's worth the cost.
Well this is great. Just great. I recently crossed the threshold of having 10,000 pictures uploaded, too. $50 per year really doesn't sound very affordable for such a simple service. Are there any more reasonably-priced cloud services for image hosting? I really just want to host and store the images...I don't need any other fancy services or features.

Sorry to say, but anything that doesn't suck is going to cost money. Hosting just isn't free, or at least not without drawbacks.
The pictures I post to this forum, I upload to Imgur (https://imgur.com/). Making an account is free, but the images are compressed a bit. I don't know if there's any limits to the number of images, but I have ~1800 of mine on there and haven't had any problems. Sorting and labeling images is kind of clunky, but the ability is there.
Honestly, in your position I'd just pay the $50. Not worth the hassle of moving everything, and $50/year for practically unlimited, original resolution images is a pretty good deal.
^ Regarding cloud storage, iCloud is $0.99/month (~$12/year) for 50GB and $2.99/month (~$36/year) for 200GB, but it's not easy to share photos stored on iCloud.
I guess we better hope that the free accounts stay at 1,000 photos, because FWIW, they could go down to 500 in a few years, and then we'd all be screwed to the wall!

I just updated to Pro, so here's some thoughts.
1) The $35 deal/year deal is a clickthough promo (https://www.flickr.com/account/upgrade/pro?coupon=FLICKRPRO30&select&utm_campaign=flickr-lookingahead&utm_source=Flickr&utm_medium=blog) (or use code FLICKRPRO30) used by 11/30. I promise, there's no benefit to me linking you to it this way, just want to make sure you get the deal as promised. If you just click the "Pro" link in your profile, you'll get the $49.99/year offer. If you don't trust me, click on the link for the announcement (https://blog.flickr.net/en/2018/11/01/changing-flickr-free-accounts-1000-photos/) to cap limits at 1000 for non-pro members.
2) There's some neat stuff in the stats, but it wasn't making nor breaking my day. Some of my stats eventually showed up within a few minutes, but while they've counted all my views (just over a million, presumably since 2005), there's no breakdown for the days before going Pro.
3) I can see which photos are suddenly getting a lot of attention; though it's probably safe to say that a bot might doing most of the looking (for example, today it's a very-average photo of a runway). Or that it got attention from some other site.
4) There's a way to see your Source Breakdown; where are the clicks coming from? In my case, most of it seems to be is IntraFlickr traffic. There's a section for Social Media and Search. There's a few on Other but all of it shows "no referrer".
5) I'll probably never use the Auto Uploadr. I like to know what's being uploaded, being able to tag them and move them where I want, and in what order.
I've noticed since I updated my account that a lot of my monochromes are getting viewed a lot. I suspect a bot since they tend to be really inane pictures that don't provide much context outside their parent album..so WTH. :eyebrow:

I-270 W Bound from Riverview Drive to MO Route 367.
I see January 8, 2019 is the last free day to post photos for flickr. After that you must pay to upload (a set monthly package) any photos over 1000.
I currently have over 3k photos so I am locked if I continue to add. Are there any other sites out there cheaper or for free? Personally I think its time for a website of my own, but that may be more than what these free (or even Flickr now lol) is asking. Any recommendations?
I don't have that many (in the 1300s as of this writing), but I'm still in a mad dash to remove many of my pics from Flickr right now.

I am fully okay with others using my photos, as long as they don't claim it's theirs.
I don't, and I try as best as I can to deny any claims to the pics that aren't mine... and I have a lot of those.
I think that since Flickr doesn't want me uploading any more photos to their site, I won't be adding photos to Flickr anymore. I signed up for storage on Google photos. Even having 10,000 photos uploaded, I'm only using about 25GB. So I got 100GB of storage on Google, which will be the home of any new photos I upload. I don't really need a whole terabyte of storage.
It's not like this information is really important to anyone other than myself, but I found a solution that only costs $20 per year, rather than the $50 per year that Flickr wants. So I just wanted people to know that this option is out there
I'm getting caught up on my Flickr uploads from last year. I've been lax in updating the directory on the Millennium Highway web site, but the Flickr stream at http://www.flicker.com/photos/hbelkins/albums is up to date for 2018. Included in the most recent upload are my various Kentucky photos from last year, as well as pics from my trip to the recent abandoned PA Turnpike meet.
There's always WikiMedia Commons if you're okay with sharing (i.e. no copyrights). That, and presumably the photos have to be of something encyclopedic.
I have zero desire to feed the greed of Flickr's owners and operators by buying Pro. As a result, I've gotten an Imgur account, which appears to have no upload limit (which is all I want, really; I don't care if it compresses the images a little bit, as long as you can still clearly see what's there).

I'm still going to need a place for my copyvio stuff. Does Google Photos have privacy shields? In other words, do they allow you to post pictures only you can see?
UPDATE; January 8, 2019; Well, it's now January 8, 2019 12:05 A.M., and I'm still being allowed to remove my more than 1,000 pics. It's just a slow process, because my PC has been forcing me to refresh my pages a lot of times.
If you notice any asterisks in the titles of my Flickr albums (https://www.flickr.com/photos/138603251@N02/albums), it's because I'm marking them safe from the Great Flickr Purge of 2019. :D

People use unattributed photos all the time. I think the only true way to stop people from using unattributed photos is to not share them to the internet.
That's why I carry a hammer to bust someone's fingers the moment I catch them do it. As you can well imagine, I don't get to use the hammer.
So I just put most of my photos out there for consumption. If they feel like playing nice, then good for me and good for you; I've found about 100+ examples where someone (or
somebot?) actually went through the trouble of correct attribution. A few people have even contacted me by e-mail, even though they don't truly have to ask me. The fact it made someone feel a little better to use it makes me feel good, in a way.
Otherwise, I can't get too bothered about some road, sign, car, and cloud photos. The few photos of my kids and family, that's where the line gets crossed. I don't see any season why anyone I don't know would want them, and I leave copyrights on them. They way modeling rights are established - as opposed to some inanimate object in the public view - I'm not too worried about them appearing anywhere in a questionable manner.

I'm down to 1,301, and I'm losing space on my PC. Speaking of which, Microsoft wants to add another shitty update this year that's supposed to crowd up your PC.

And I'm sure I have other material from other localities on here that might be new to you as well.
Of course, if we're Facebook friends then you would have seen all of these, and then some, already.
Got an email today saying that my Flickr Pro account would be automatically renewed next month for $100, at two years at $50 each. Maybe I missed something when Flickr changed hands, but I didn't think the price would be going up that much.
I'll be deactivating my Pro account. I already have all my photos backed up locally, and will be moving them to the Millennium Highway Facebook page until such time as I can get motivated to upload them all to the millenniumhwy.net Web site (I've been using Flickr since 2013 instead of uploading pics directly to the site.) This means that for the foreseeable future, any Flickr links on the roadtrips page on my site (which admittedly hasn't been updated with links for a few years) will probably be dead.
In the meantime, if anyone can recommend any good tools to use to generate photo albums and HTML pages of photos, I'm all ears. I was using a combination of iPhoto and GoLive to produce and edit the pages, but that proved to be too clunky, which is why I switched to Flickr.
Also, any tips on downloading photos from Flickr would be great, as I may go ahead and download all my albums just to make sure I have another copy saved somewhere other than the backup I already have.
The price was $30 per year for a limited time and $50 per year thereafter. They didn't change the price from what they said it was before.
I don't know what happened with Flickr, but overnight and into this morning I got something like three dozen emails saying someone had followed me on Flickr. None of the account names looked legit. (sample name: lipikaparvinp2p)
Wonder what's up?

About two years ago, I had something similar on Flickr; having very few photos and yet loads of sudden followers is a warning sign. All were obliterated in a few days' time.
(If you get a photo to make the front page of "Explore", you'll suddenly get a few more followers over the next 48 hours.)
I have my photos from June's road trip I done from my Louisiana visit of the trip. I got all of I-20 from I-220 west to the Texas Border as well as all of I-49 from US 71 north of Texarkana to Shreveport as well.

Could have to do with the fact the site keeps changing owners, in 2017 the owner switched from Yahoo! (2005-17) to a company called Oath (2017-18).
I've added a few more photos to my Flickr page. A few shots of I-49 construction, plus a couple more entries to the "Off the Wall" album. With the weather starting to warm up, I'm hoping to get some more road time and more photos.
Flickr cancelled my password after the expiration date from last year, and they won't let me make a new one... and they've still been sending me e-mails trying to get me to get a pro-account.

This isn't one of my photos but I did spot it recently. The caption says it's the PA Turnpike in 1953 but the number paralleling of tunnels on the highway (s/b (1) if 1953) nor any of the straight alignments approaching the tunnels match the PA Turnpike. Anyone know where this might have been taken?

Got my western trip photos posted -- 14 albums worth, representing 14 days of travels.
Some of these pictures were adversely affected by weather, sun angle, and a not-so-great windshield wiper on the passenger's side of my brother's truck. Plus, darkness kept me from chronicling the last miles on several days, and battery issues plagued me the second day of the trip. (Not to mention, I dozed off and missed a bunch of US 6 in Utah.) And there are lots of scenery pictures in several of the albums.

Photos from my weekend trip to Tennessee and Alabama with my brother as he was scouting out places to camp and fish.
Day 1
https://www.flickr.com/photos/hbelkins/albums/72177720306565617
Photos start at the end of the Bluegrass Parkway and are of the Western Kentucky Parkway, Pennyrile Parkway, local roads between Hopkinsville, Ky., and the Paris, Tenn. area, US 79 and various connecting roads, and US 641 and various connecting roads until it got too dark to take pictures on the way to Pickwick Landing, Tenn.
Day 2
https://www.flickr.com/photos/hbelkins/albums/72177720306575849
A convoluted route from Pickwick Landing to Scottsboro, Ala., with a lot of the trip being on county roads my brother used to check out various possible camping/fishing sites on a few lakes.
Day 3
https://www.flickr.com/photos/hbelkins/albums/72177720306562355
Starting at Scottsboro, heading north to Kentucky. After he checked out a few campgrounds on Tim's Ford Lake, the route led to I-24 and I-65 through Nashville. I quit taking pics at E-town but took a few of new signage on the US 127 Lawrenceburg bypass.
This was my first time to be on I-65 since the three-lane widening was complete south of E-town, and it was only by a quirk of Google Maps that I was on the route. My brother was routing the trip with Google Maps. At our second stop at Tim's Ford, he entered his home in Owen County as his destination and Google routed him from that area via Cookeville, then TN 111, US 127 and KY 90 to the Burnside/Somerset area, then KY 461 to hit I-75 at Mt. Vernon. He decided on the fly to check out a third campground, and the software recalculated to use I-24 and go through the traffic mess that was Nashville in early afternoon.
On this trip, I used an iPhone app called GPS Tracks to keep a record of the routes we were on. One of its export options is an image of the route on a map. I generated those for each day and added them to the Flickr albums. The app will also produce KML and GPX files that will display the route on a zoomable map; you can't really get a lot of detail on the images the app generates and that are in the Flickr albums.
Last week, I travelled to Georgia and Alabama.

Updated. I don't really go onto Flickr much anymore, and when I did, I would upload photos in bulk (so this photo must have been in the wrong folder). A better way to get my attention regarding any corrections that need to be made would be to send me a personal message using that option in the AARoads Forum, since I don't check every section of the forum (but would get alerted if I receive a new message). Another Forum member informed me of your request.
Thanks, and I renamed the Wikimedia commons image.
