Title: What are all those abdoned roadways that are along Vista Del Mar in Los Angeles?
Post by: roadman65 on May 04, 2011, 08:14:01 PM
I noticed that west of LAX there are a series of abandoned roadways that are located on the west side of Pershing Drive and east of Vista Del Mar (the street that runs along the Pacific).   The whole area is fenced in along Vista Del Mar and it seems that whole block north of Imperial Highway is closed off to human and road traffic.  It looks like part of a state park, but the side along Pershing Drive has a 50 feet drop and if you head west on World Way West (the cargo road inside LAX) you are dwarfed by it at the trumpet interchange there.

The abandoned area looks like it was part of a street grid as the roadways look perfect almost.

It was indeed once a neighborhood...it was abandoned as LAX was expanded, as the houses would be right at the end of the runways and underneath departing aircraft.

Historical Aerials has a shot from 1952 with some of the houses still present:
