Title: Missouri Highway Questions & Oddities
Post by: Route66Fan on March 31, 2021, 09:44:32 PM
I've wondered for some time why does MO 98 exist & if there were at one point plans to extend it across the Missouri River to Rocheport, MO, before I-70 was built? It seems like MO 98 from MO 87 to MO 179 could be a Northern extension of MO 179 & the rest of it from MO 179 to Overton, MO could be MO 179 Spur, or a lettered route.

Wow, that is quite the unceremonious eastern endpoint, isn't it?  I don't know the answer to your question, but now you've got me curious as well.

In that same area, I wonder why between Boonville and Glasgow, MO 5 loops towards Fayette, and shares a long concurrency with MO 240, while MO 87 is the bypass that meets MO 5 at both ends (and its northern terminus is at Glasgow). Wouldn't it make sense to have MO 87 take the route to Fayette and end there, while MO 5 take the bypass?

It appears (see pg. 14 at https://mostateparks.com/sites/mostateparks/files/Rocheport%20Historic%20District.pdf) that there was a ferry for the National Old Trails Road up until 1922.

The 1922 Missouri Official (http://www.cosmos-monitor.com/mo/hist/maps/etc/map1922-backlin.html) shows MO 98 already in place and MO 2 already crossing the river at Boonville.  Per pg. 154 https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=osu.32435061942983&view=1up&seq=154&q1=ferry the Boonville Bridg opened 7/4/24.

The 1920-22 biannual highway report (https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=nyp.33433107851168&view=1up&seq=5) seems to show the 1921 system did not have a direct connection from Booneville to Rocheport except via today's MO 98, but the 1922 numbering system later in the report does have MO 2 making the direct connection via Boonville bridge

MO 98 used to go to the end of that gravel road and it appears to me Missouri went out of their way to make MO 98 not the way to Rocheport instead of putting it there to someday get a bridge there.

I remember reading that there was a ferry there at one point.

Why is there no fence between the freeway and frontage road?  In Florida and many other places a fence would be mandatory between a highway and local road.

I can easily see 98 from 179 to Overton getting downgraded to a lettered route.

Does the Saint Charles Interstate 70 Business Loop still exist?

According to street view, as of May 2019, yes.

Well I drove most of it last weekend and didn't even think about it by that name.  It's really not signed that well minus the few turns.  Locally I never heard anyone talk about it and I live in St. Charles.  Instead people either talk about driving on 5th Street or First Capitol Drive.   I will have to look again the next time I run errands.
