Or at least in Back to the Future 2, they did. Perhaps the offseason moves that they made were inspired by the YouTube clip below  :bigass:

Go Cubs Go! Go Cubs Go! Hey Chicago, what do you say? The Cubs are gonna win today!

And if Lester doesn't pitch a perfect game every time, and doesn't pitch for all nine innings, then the Cubs should demand their money back.
"And ninety-five is the route you were on.  It was not the speed limit sign."  - Jim Croce (from Speedball Tucker)

Of years of roads and highway signs" (with apologies to Carole King and Tom Rush)

Where's the flying cars?

At least the USA Today still prints the paper...although who actually reads the physical paper (except for those that get it free at a hotel)?

Queen Diana might miss her trip to Washington, unfortunately.

I find it interesting that the Cubs will legitimately have a shot at it next year if they stay healthy. Of course, they won't have a chance to play Florida in the WS - but they COULD face Tampa Bay...

Maybe in 1985 plutonium is available at your corner drug store, but in 2014, it's a little hard to come by!

I still think that the Cardinals are the best team in the NL Central until proven otherwise.  I thinks the Cubs will be a factor but they seem to be a year away (besides the Pirates have made the playoffs the last 2 seasons).

Man, to have me a Gray's Sports Almanac.  Though, I'd prefer one that maybe goes out to about 2050.

IMO, this year's Cubs team seems ALOT like 2012's Blue Jays as a big-market team that made a ton of offseason moves, highlighted by a big pitching acquisition. I think they peter out due to a lack of depth and a tough division.

I'm not sure if it would continue to work after people figure out that you always win your bets. After all, couldn't the people on the teams you're betting on figure out you're betting on them to win, and then bet on the other team and throw the game?

Well, yes, it probably can't continue forever.

Key would be to do a few large bets on something with high odds (placing a bet on the Raiders to win this year's SB probably paid 250:1 or better) and do that just a few times before cashing out.

algorerhythms

One challenge to doing it as a few large bets with very high odds is whether the casino/bookie would be able/willing to pay you the whole amount.

Causality begs to differ.

BTTF does not follow Novikov Self- Consistency principle. If the bet itself causes a change in the outcome of the event, the book wouldn't change until some time after the bet is placed, according to the silly temporal mechanics shown in the movie.

Al gore rhythms' scenario is problematic, though. Any team can bet against themselves and throw the game, with our without information from the future. Either way, the league should have rules against that. If the lucky gambler's bets are taken to be prophetic by others, the smarter and simpler course of action would be to bet the same way, and just about anyone can do that. But chances are, the bookies would refuse to do business with the gambler, or try to take advantage of the information he possesses by adjusting the odds when dealing with other gamblers.
Wait, it's all Ohio? Always has been.

algorerhythms

Ah, that's what I missed in my scenario: the bookie, if he knows that that particular gambler is always right, will adjust his odds to reduce his losses. That makes a betting-against-yourself scenario more profitable, because the odds will be more favorable to get a large return. If the bookies adjust the odds by enough, it might be enough that the athlete betting against himself won't have to worry about the consequences from the league if he's caught...

formulanone

Just lose a few intentionally and use different bookies or houses; not that difficult...just a nickel bet on your sentimental favorites, and the losses are bound to happen.

vtk

I don't see Biff being clever enough to place anything but winning bets.  I wonder if Gray's included a footnote about Biff's apparent luck in the alternate timeline...

I would love to see the Cubs win a World Series in my lifetime. Please end my suffering!

I'm so over Bartman.

I wonder if he started going to the games again.  I heard he is still a fan.   http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/14/sports/baseball/10-years-later-a-cubs-fan-remains-invisible.html?pagewanted=all&_r=1&;  thought it was an interesting story anyway.  I'd have a "Steve Bartman day"  Let him throw out the first pitch, maybe to the guy who was supposed to catch the ball that day, put him in the press box, sing "take me out" and call it "remove the curse" day and have fun with it.  Doubt he'd do it though.

Watch all 9 starters go down with injuries that day.

Yikes, you might be right.

The Cubs are like the ultimate franchise.  Always loved no matter how bad they are.  Are there any fair weather Cub fans?

Just make a huge bet on a big game and stop. That's what I'd do. Then again, if I were a star pro athlete I'd sign a huge 5 year contract and then retire.
