Fresno, California

-  People come here usually for the following reasons:

1.  Yosemite National Park
2.  Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks
3.  Something agricultural related

Interestingly somehow Fresno is the 34th largest city in the county at approximately 542,000 residents.  Fresno doesn't feel like a city of over half a million people and I wonder how many residents are even aware that it is.

The road network in Fresno is surprisingly robust with four freeways (five if you want to count part of South Golden State Boulevard); CA 99, CA 41, CA 168 and CA 180.  Fresno is the largest city in the country without an Interstate but CA 99 will remind how quickly that is really just semantics.  US 99 is the big legacy highway in Fresno, unfortunately most of it will be razed to make way for the HSR.

hotdogPi

Clinched, minus I-93 (I'm missing a few miles and my file is incorrect)

Traveled, plus US 13, 44, and 50, and several state routes

I will be in Burlington VT for the eclipse.

I literally can walk across the street and out of the city limit onto swath of farm land stretching east to the Sierra Nevada Mountains.  Most people live north of downtown, I hardly ever see any of them.  I've lived in a lot of cities and this is the one that feels the least it's actual population size.

Overland Park, Kansas.  It's the second-largest city in the state, but it isn't a control city on any road (unless Metcalf Avenue counts, and by the way, this sign actually got replaced with an updated version of the same sign: https://goo.gl/maps/GkecgrdCGEUrfHHN7).  Overland Park, Kansas is also roughly twice as densely populated as neighboring Kansas City, Missouri.

Yes Its interesting that Fresno is bigger than Sacramento as California's largest city within the Central Valley. Its like saying San Jose is the Bay Area's largest city over San Francisco and most people would be shocked by that even though San Jose overtook San Francisco for Northern California's largest city 30 years ago.
