Recovery.gov now has a photo album on Flickr : http://www.flickr.com/groups/1380829@N25/

They have invited me to post a couple of my photos on their site (a Mississippi ARRA sign and an Arkansas ARRA sign). Look at the group rules: http://www.flickr.com/groups/recoverydotgov/rules/?comment_id=72157624100351664

All photographs become the sole property of the Board. The Board will not provide any financial compensation for the submitted photograph(s).

I don't think so. I'm not signing my rights away. I'll just post a couple lesser quality photos and let the government own them instead.

Same reason why my alma mater (Virginia Commonwealth University) gets none of my photos unless I sell them directly, because they do the same thing on their official Flickr group - all photos in it become their property, no royalties, and may be used for any purpose without notifying the person who submitted the photo.

Is that even legal?  Why does the copyright in their group supersede the copyright you set on the photos?  What is Flickr's policy on it?

I don't think Flickr/Yahoo cares. When one of my photos got lifted and showed up on Cafe Press, Flickr all but said "NMP".

Now, I caught some on MoDOT's site a couple years ago, but when I complained, the photos disappeared though they never acknowledged my complaint.

The whole world seems to be in MFFY mode anymore.

I am with David and Will on all of this. This is why its a good idea to post an edited down version of the original photo. If someone wants the original, they have to request you for it. If they want a 72 dpi version, there is no stopping them from using it. But that does not print well, so you at least cover your rear end for preventing photos from showing up in hard copy form.

ah okay.  Well, you can replace "forget" with something a tad stronger.  Also, you can replace "MF" with a thirteen letter adjective!
