It's pretty stupid to cross a 10-lane freeway with a bicycle, especially considering there is a bicycle bridge within 1/8 mile from the University Avenue interchange.

It obviously was not a smart decision.  A blood alcohol test may be in order, IMHO.

So, let me see if I get this straight a cyclist decides to cross the Eastshore Freeway that carries both Interstate 80 and Interstate 580. Take a minute, and let that soak in. Seriously, who walks a bicycle across a 10 lane freeway carrying two major Interstate Highways (the main route and a child route). I don't see why this cyclist didn't just use the nearby Berkeley I-80 Bridge. Maybe the victim was intoxicated and thought the highway was the faster way. I don't know, but I feel sad for the family who lost a loved one.

honestly, at 4am, the traffic might be light enough that someone would consider doing it even while sober.

but you'd have to be very, very familiar with the road, the sight lines, etc.  I think this guy thought he was okay, then the truck came around the curve doing 70 and neither had enough time to react.

I'm trying to figure out why you'd want to ride your bicycle to a concrete divider anyway.
