Its about time, i thought they should have done this years ago. Now i don't have to go way down to 1-80 to get to 1-57.

An article in the Joliet Herald-News from Nov 23, 2008 stated that the interchange is due to be open by 2013.  I would expect that is if funding is found.

I wonder how they will implement the tolls on the ramps on that one.... :-/

I mean, if you look at the other major interchanges on several tollways in the Chicago area, they are all very drawn out and feature long ramps....

In the book Legendary Route 66 there is mention in the caption next to a picture of downtown Springfield, IL, on page 179 of a plan by the governor in the mid 1960's to reroute I-55 away from the US 66 corridor and go from Lincoln to Joliet via Peoria and maybe LaSalle.

The interchange is scheduled to be partially opened this fall.

It's damn near ready for Phase I (Nbd I-57 to Nbd I-294 and Sbd I-294 to Sbd I-57) to be open soon.  The ramps are all in place, and it appears the signage is being put up.  Got a photo of one of the signs (covered up) today.

Will they eventually put in place a fully directional interchange, or is it just going to be 57 N to 294 N, 57 S to 294 S, 294 N to 57 N, 294 S to 57 S?

It will be a 3/4 interchange.

N 57 -> N 294 / S 294 -> S 57 (direct flyovers)
N 294 -> N 57 / S 57 -> S 294 (direct flyovers)
S 57 -> N 294 / S 294 -> N 57 (will involve a loop ramp)

N 57 -> S 294 / N 294 -> S 57 will be handled by I-80.

It's going to be electronic tolling only.

And an E-Z pass is required. (just to clarify)

But not necessary.  It is also toll-by-plate as long as you pay within 7 days.

Not that it matters, but there will be 30 days to pay until January 1.

Almost ready to open!

The signs are up.

And a lot more user friendly than some other tollways - I-Pass or pay on-line.

Woah, when did ISTHA learn how to make signs that use Clearview the correct* way?

* The only thing that one can point out is that "147" in 147th Street is in Clearview, but frankly I'm not sure that this is in the FHWA's mandate on whether or not destinations using numbers should be in FHWA or Clearview.

The signs are up on I-294 south as well, with the same I-PASS or PAY ONLINE add-ons. I drove through there today, which is why I don't have pictures to post.

The signs in the photo above your post are on I-57, which means whoever did the signing plans for the Toll Authority also had to get IDOT's blessing on the design.

But, they are very distinctly ISTHA in design, not IDOT.  The location of the "TOLL" banner gives it away.
