Now that Ohio is in a single board (along with the KY side of the Cincinnati metro area), and a push to make more specialized threads instead of putting everything in a general state thread, here's a thread for Cincinnati area projects. The Brent Spence Bridge will stay in its own thread.

I'm not sure what specifically to talk about to start off, but besides the Brent Spence Bridge, here's a list of major projects under construction or in planning I'm aware of

Under Construction:
- I-275 SmartLane between US 42 (exit 46) and Loveland-Maderia Rd (exit 52)
- OH 32 traffic signal removal and new interchanges between Eastgate and Batavia, at Glen Este-Withamsville Rd and Bach Buxton Rd.
- Direct SB Mason-Montgomery to SB I-71 ramp (exit 19)
- I-75 widening between Glendale-Milford Rd (exit 14) and I-275 (exit 16), including an expanded Sharon Rd (exit 15) interchange.
- I-75 widening between Hopple St (exit 3) and Mitchell St (exit 5)
- I-74/I-75 interchange reconstruction

In Planning:
- I-71 NB ramp to Kennedy Ave (exit 8C)
- I-75 between OH 126 (exit 10) and Shepherd Lane (exit 13). This part is currently undergoing a feasibility study on realigning the I-75 NB lanes to the alignment of the SB lanes.
- I-75 widening between OH 562 and OH 126
- Western Hills Viaduct replacement
- I-75 reconstruction between Downtown and Western Hills Viaduct (exit 2), including the reconstruction of the WHV interchange, and northbound exit ramps at Ezzard Charles Dr (exit 1G)

Hey, this isn't my usual Midwest board fare. Who let you in here? (I'm joking, of course)

One project you forgot was the I-75 and OH-129 interchange project in Liberty Township. That's going to be seeing significant changes.

:) Needs more... :sombrero: Not quite... :bigass: Perfect.

This aged well.

Not until I see a plate of Skyline Chili and a cold Hudepohl.  (Not that either of these are on my diet anymore).

I-71 SB ramp from SB Mason-Montgomery Rd opened sometime in the past month. I was in the area yesterday and got some photos.

This was needed.  With all the residences, restaurants, car dealerships, and office buildings in that area, it gives an extra opportunity to get on SB I-71 instead of all traffic using the ramp from Fields-Ertel onto SB I-71.
I don't need a GPS.  I AM the GPS! (for family and friends)

I used the left turn ramp from Fields-Ertel onto SB I-71 that day too. To me, it seems like the new ramp didn't affect the amount of left-turning traffic that much (still a long line of left-turning cars), since most of SB Mason-Montgomery to SB I-71 traffic already used Escort Dr to get to I-71 prior to that. But this could change in the next couple of months.

Hi all. I hope that Northern Kentucky is OK for this thread since it is still Cincinnati Metro. I'm a KYTC scholarship student now and I'd like to put together a small list of projects in NKY currently under construction or in the 2022 Highway Plan for the next several years

Under construction
- KY 338 and I-75 / I-71 DDI + US 25 and KY 338 SPUI - Completion at end of summer
- KY 536 and I-75 / I-71 DDI - Completion sometime this year (it is almost done anyways)
- KY 536 from Dixie Highway (US 25) to Turkeyfoot Road (KY 1303) widening - Completion end of year
- Mineola Pike (KY 3076) widening - No idea but probably end of year
Very soon to be under construction
- KY 18 Superstreet project from Krogers to Houston Road (KY 842) approximately
- Donaldson Highway (KY 236) widening from Mineola Pike (KY 3076) to Houston Road (KY 842)
Planned
- KY 536 widening from Turkeyfoot Road (KY 1303) to Madison Pike (KY 17)
- Massive rebuild of I-75 / I-71 and I-275 interchange in NKY
- I-71 widening from I-75 to the current 6 lane section at the Sparta Speedway
- Replacement KY 8 bridge in Covington / Newport
- A bunch of smaller projects

Here are a couple shots from inside the KY 338 Richwood Road and I-75 DDI project.

I'll have to get some shots of the Dixie Highway US 25 overpass where the future SPUI will be. Can't get too close to it right now but the bridge is really coming along.

Which scholarship and which school? I presume you'll be doing your summers at D-6. My counterpart there retired last year.

Mods: This means that our young scholarship student now is deserving of the DOT Employee badge. KYTC scholarship students are KYTC employees; they work summers and are guaranteed permanent full-time jobs after they graduate.

Guaranteed?  So, they could show up and be a bad intern and still be hired full-time?

Here in NY, we will certainly hire an intern full-time if they perform well, but we wouldn't guarantee the job just because they were hired as an intern.

That's too bad. I rather liked the separation there.

How exactly would they do this with I-75 in Arlington Heights? It's six lanes (three in each direction) at that point so I'm thinking it'd be difficult to allign two directions there without the city in the median.

I'll read through it and summarize it later; I think they mention a solution in there.

Widening the existing northbound lanes (much of it elevated) is prohibitively expensive due to some high-voltage power line supports that would have to be relocated.  Also, most of the buildings that were to the east of the existing SB lanes have been torn down, so the ability to widen the right-of-way significantly is there.   I believe there is a park that would have to be relocated.
2di's clinched: 44, 66, 68, 71, 72, 74, 78, 83, 84(east), 86(east), 88(east), 96

Thanks for posting that link; pity the Exhibits weren't part of the PDF. My take is not that the power lines would need to be relocated, but that they were worried about future issues when Duke Energy would eventually need to replace the towers. Long bridges a definite concern. I liked the alternative that would have new NB express lanes follow the SB route, and rehab the existing NB roadway for the local exits. But that also had issues. Construction not expected to start until 2028, so plenty of time to see this Interstate oddity.

Looks like the I-75 split's days are numbered; I always thought it was cool to surround an entire neighborhood by two high-speed roadways. It'll be a sad day when this Thru the Valley thing victimizes it eventually.

2022 TRAC applications are in for Ohio. This guides upcoming major projects in the state. List: https://www.transportation.ohio.gov/programs/trac/resources/2022tracapps
Looks like there are two Cincinnati related TRAC applications, both for the I-75 Thru the Valley project.

Widening to 4 lanes per direction, and relocating the NB alignment to where the SB alignment is (as discussed earlier in this thread):

Replacement of the railroad bridge over SB I-75 just north of the Galbraith interchange, in preparation for the NB relocation:

I doubt the residents in that neighborhood thought it was good to be completely cut off from the city by freeways at the time. (Most people aren't like the old man in Little Pink Houses who thinks an interstate through his yard makes America great.) I think it's cool when this happens in rural areas where few are affected and good for industrial areas so traffic can easily access freeways without using city streets (shades of Cities Skylines). But I don't think this split in the middle of Cincinnati is good for the local residents and its removal should improve their quality of life.

Civil Engineering scholarship at UofL. Yup, I do my Co-Op semesters and will do my post-university employment at home in D6. I've been doing this co-op at the Traffic & Permitting department.

In other news, a new planned design for the replacement KY 8 4th Street Bridge between Covington and Newport have been proposed. It's quite ambitious on the front of pedestrian / bicycle accessibility.
https://www.fox19.com/2020/05/12/northern-kentucky-bridge-be-replaced-unprecedented-developments-take-shape-3/
It's nice to see the old IRS building site in Covington and the former Section 8 housing site in Newport finally being given some attention and development. Hopefully whatever the new 4th Street Bridge that is built is at least has a separated bike path (the current official KYTC proposals do) because there was an incident last year where two bicyclists were killed, one on the 4th Street Bridge and one on the 12th Street Bridge, in a single weekend.

Also some more NKY news
- Donaldson Highway (KY 236) widening is starting on Monday. Donaldson will be widened from 2 to 5 lane, including better turn lanes, from Houston Road (KY 842) to Mineola Pike (KY 3076), intersecting right with the Mineola widening project that widens to the exact same standard. There will be a 10 foot multi use path on one side, the same as seen on many recent KYTC projects here, and a regular sidewalk on the other side. Completion is September 2025.
- KY 536 widening between Turkeyfoot Road (KY 1303) and Calvary Road / Williamswoods Drive starts sometime this year and will be widened to 4 lanes with a multi use path. Of note is the fact that the entire planned stretch of KY 536 from Toebben Drive to KY 17 will be entirely roundabout intersections, and it may also have a median in the middle effectively turning all driveway entrances into RIROs

I did a little trip to check on the progress of the Mt. Zion Road widening and the construction around Richwood.  Observations...

1.  Mt. Zion is being rebuilt to four lanes from Sigmon Lane to near the old Erpenbeck property west of Bristow Rd (KY 1303) mainly south of where the current two-lane road is.  The new road is going have a median, as mentioned above.  Mt. Zion is on a temporary road for about 1/2 mile from 1/4 mile west of Bristow to where the houses currently are.  It appears that the house just northwest of the Bristow/Mt. Zion intersection is gone, it is cleared through the trees, and that the four-lanes will be built on top of the current road and just north as one approaches Bristow from the west.  This will assist in tying in to the planned four-lane that will be built for Bristow toward Independence.
2.  US 25 (Dixie Highway) has been totally relocated through the Richwood area to accommodate the overpass and future SPUI interchange with KY 338.  Going south, US 25 curves west just past Old Richwood Road, swinging around the Mr. Fuel (formerly Pilot) Truck Center, and approaching a stoplight at the future relocated Richwood Road (KY 338), which is slightly south of where the original road was.  US 25 continues straight where the easternmost parking was for the TA Travel Center, then curves back to its original path 1/4 south of where the SPUI will be constructed.  This surprised me as I drove through, partly because of the many times I stopped either at the old Pilot or the TA to fuel up when I drove for a Cincinnati trucking company, and remembering how the area used to look like.  The SPUI area is still in its early- to mid-construction stage.  As an aside, the TA is being rebuilt and will probably be in the same footprint as before when this road work is completed.
3.  The DDI at I-71/75 and KY 338 is coming along.  Not much change from the photos posted above, though.
I don't need a GPS.  I AM the GPS! (for family and friends)
