I give this ten thousand thumbs up. And yes, I'm old enough to remember when button copy was everywhere.
You really don't need to be that old to remember when button copy was everywhere. NYSDOT started their mass replacements in the mid-late 90s, so I remember quite a bit of NY button copy, and Ohio was installing it until the early 2000s. I lived in OH 2003-07 and they were installing (lit) button copy the first year or so I was there.
MA stopped installing it and then, when I was a teenager in the late 1980s/early 1990s, started installing some again on I-91, particularly around West Springfield.

Actually, MassDPW stopped doing button-copy signage en masse by the early 70s. There was a brief revival in the mid-80s; mainly the signage along the Southeast Expressway portion of I-93 when it was reconstructed circa 1984-85. For the early 90s, only the I-shields on signs were button-copy.
Mass. Pike (I-90) signage, via the Mass. Turnpike Authority, used button-copy through the 90s.

Do they re-use those button copy shields on new signage? Or did DPW and/or MassHighway just have a lot of shields manufactured, with plenty of backstock?
Much of the interstate signage looks remarkably "new" for 15-20 year old signs, while the button copy shields still look pretty good...

Post the worst, most ineptly put together pieces of crap in your state. Not just "oh, it's in Clearview", "wrong type of shield", or "it's a bubble shield" or anything like that. No, those shields were new-builds for the signage. The reflective red-and-blue backgrounds being the dead give-away.

Such is actually two images placed/photoshopped on top of each other. The first one is indeed that of I-95 southbound in Westwood, about 2 miles from the I-93 interchange in Canton (the BGS is the 2-mile advance sign). What's below the overpass is actually a separate & unrelated image.
Here's the actual sign and surroundings (https://www.google.com/maps/@42.2239213,-71.1731232,3a,75y,132.56h,66.02t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sqL4GCGXSQOmnp7nUQdjGuQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656).
Don't know about the lower image, which appears
mirrored.
I KNEW the BGS looked familiar. Good ol' 128.

Lol. That actually reminds me...does anyone here actually parallel park by intentionally bumping the cars around them? My car is small enough that this isn't an issue for me, but I could see someone with a larger car w/o backup sensors or a camera utilising this method. Or anyone trying to park in NYC.

SOP in New York City is to tap the car in front of/behind you. It's the only way to fit so many cars in and the reason why so many cars have bumper pads. I do love how every ad for those things featuring real license plates uses NY plates.

Never knew that was a thing....the pads or the procedure. Are y'all taught that in drivers ed classes?
It's possible they teach it in the City. They definitely don't Upstate (but outside of the Hudson Valley, few places parallel parking is the main parking option). I only know how to do the tap thing because I was taught to parallel park by my grandfather, who spent much of his life in dense parts of Queens and Brooklyn.
I don't know if parallel parking is still part of the Kentucky driver's license road test or not, but it was when I took it. If I had tapped, bumped or otherwise struck a vehicle while parking, I would have automatically failed the test.

That's technically the case in New York, too. But so is pulling onto a street if anybody is visible, responding to waving, hitting a bump, etc.

Yeah, it's often not worth detouring for gas in NJ anymore. Why get gas there if Ulster County is only a few cents more expensive?

By the mid-90s, they weren't requiring it as part of the road test in Florida. Apparently all, or most, parallel parking spaces had been converted to diagonal parking.
Me, I wouldn't say I go out of my way to bump cars ahead of/behind me when parallel parking, but I don't sweat it when it happens, either. The way I see it, they put bumpers on cars for a reason.

You could never drive in Seattle without hitting bumps. At best you can miss the potholes big enough to cost you an axle.

I'm strongly against a dislike button. It would significantly reduce my activity for fear of getting downvoted.
I personally wouldn't be too overly hip for either a like or a dislike button (but if I had to choose one, like would be better, as it would show one's appreciation for a post, and dislike buttons would easily start controversy if a person got a very large number of dislikes on their post). I think we're probably fine on this forum with none of those buttons, but that's just me.

Well, I know there are a few times when I've felt that I've liked something enough to warrant expressing it somehow but don't really have anything to say other than "I like this", which IMO doesn't really add to the discussion. Such situations I wind up just moving on without replying. I can certainly understand not wanting to become Facebook, though.

I love the one little corner of the angled area that's inline with the railroad rather than US 12 or a N/S grid.
Denver does the same thing. The entire metropolitan area is built on a N/S grid, except for the northwestern downtown area, which is aligned with the railroad and the South Platte River.
Different grids is a very common thing. Seattle has 4 or 5. S.F. has 2. Many of the Central Valley cities along CA 99 and the railroad are aligned with them, and then switch to N-S grids outside of their downtown.
Then you have San Jose, which simply fans out southward from downtown. Meridian Avenue is the closest thing to a strictly N-S route -- but it actually bends slightly SSE near its southern end. Almost as if city planners threw their hands up and uttered "whatever".

One of my favorite examples is the town of Patterson, near SR130's hypothetical terminus between SR33 and I-5. The streets are laid out in a fun radial pattern that only extends about five blocks in each direction before switching to N-S/E-W. Interestingly, the rural roads on the other side of SR33 align with the rail, not cardinal directions.
Perhaps the biggest such city that comes to mind is Fresno.

Really only allowed in North America, a few states in Australia (left on red), and at like ten intersections in Germany. I'm not aware of any other countries that allow movements on red.
In most countries, slip lanes are usually provided in lieu of permitting turns on red.

:eyebrow:
Well, I wasn't expecting people not to get it, so that's not why I said that.
I elaborated on it because I was going into detail about the specific reasons why I found the meme especially impressive.
I tend to do this often in my speech and writing - it's just how I speak sometimes. I could be standing there staring at a brown driveway, and randomly say something like "I love this exposed aggregate concrete" or "I love how this driveway facilitates transportation from the road to the house the way that it does." Yeah, I'm stating the obvious - it doesn't mean I think other people don't know it - I just tend to ramble on and state things everyone already knows, just because I get excited and say more than is really necessary. I apologize if you interpreted that the wrong way.
And most people find that the humor of a joke is sucked out of it when it gets explained (if there was any to begin with!)

Well, I do highly value humor and comedy, so I will try my best next time to abstain from over-explaining a joke or a meme in the future. What you have to realize is that this is just the way I naturally operate many times, and also that my intention in that section of my post was not to "ruin the joke" but to get into some of the specific reasons why I loved the meme so much, since I was excited about it and rambling on, as I often do.
I am rather poor at social interaction and communication, and I do not operate like a normal person, so you must understand that my intentions are not malignant, but that I am just rather strange.
Quote from: MNHighwayMan on January 08, 2019, 01:37:19 AM

Some memes don't lend themselves to explaining the joke; either you know the underpinnings of the joke, or it's incomprehensible. It's my feeling that many memes aren't funny after the third or fourth time; it's the same punchline again and again. But some persist, and some are evergreen. Like slang or jargon, it's become a in-group language in and of itself.
Humor usually derives from distilling Emotion from the combination of the Absurd and the Well-Known, while assuming a little Ignorance to bridge the two. If the audience doesn't wish to apply the Ignorance, or hasn't experienced the Absurd, the joke is likely to fail. If there's a limited body of Well-Known experience to draw on, then nobody knows there's a joke in the first place. The idea of
"the joke isn't funny if I explain it" is a failure to comprehend the audience. Yeah, there's a chance you'll still be the only one laughing after explaining it, but such is life...at least they're still listening and appreciating what you have to say. In the worst case scenario, you've removed some ignorance, which isn't really a bad thing.
I have no idea why I'm talking so much about this.

Haha, that meme was a long time coming, especially from the current POTUS.
Does that mean the White House will issue a formal public apology for not having declared it a national emergency already?
To be honest, I first saw this for the Blue Route, but changed it to Breezewood, and posted it to Facebook with the notation that it might cause some liberal roadgeeks to start liking him more.

Just the photo won't do anything. If he
actually proposed a fix, he'll probably gain a small but significant number of voters in Pennsylvania.

...Then he'd throw away any goodwill by pardoning Bud Schuster. :D
A few dozen road geeks, a few hundred truckers, a few thousand Pennsylvanians would notice, but then pushed back by a few thousand locals who would like it to stay as it is. The rest of the country wouldn't care. No political net gain.

It's not as big of an employment center as it once was. There's a bunch of closed businesses, abandoned buildings and a few vacant lots.

There have to be a few people in nearby towns / cities / hamlets / townships / whateverPENNpeopleCallit that would probably be annoyed by the headline of QUIET SMALL TOWN DESTROYED BY INTERSTATE or "Breezewood is getting an exit, here's what we know so far" (which isn't real journalism). They'll be roused to some sort of action. Push the right buttons, and someone's going to care.
And few that probably muttered

I'm not sure how Pennsylvania political/municipal subdivisions go, so I'm not sure what the official boundaries of Breezewood are, but there's a small residential area located just to the south of US 30 and west of South Breezewood Road. There are also some residences on US 30 east of the turnpike connector.

Overuse of signs, such as four-way stops when unnecessary, things that should be common sense like "bridge ices before road", etc., so that drivers don't treat the signs seriously.

You can thank the lawyers for stuff like that. Before we can adopt the Geneva Convention for signs, we need to seriously overhaul our legal system.
Is the Geneva road sign convention, in comparison, really less idiot-proof? Seems that we use very similar road signs, with the designs being the major difference.
For example, the UK has a common law legal system (akin to the US, Canada, Australia, NZ) but uses Geneva-style road signs.

But . . .
It wouldn't be pointless if the IDiOTs at IDOT had been a little more cooperative and given us I-55, 57, and/or 65, meaning that I-41 and I-43 would not exist. IMO, I-39 should become I-55, I-41 becomes I-57, and I-43 becomes I-65.

Should have been a 3di.
Why?
Pennsylvania's I-476 is the longest 3di at 130 miles. The "non-pointlessly-multiplexed" section of I-41 (from I-43 at Greenfield to I-43 at Green Bay) is 137, and if you add in the Interstate-grade US-41/141 freeway to Abrams, it's over 150. I get that non-multiplexed I-41 terminates at I-43 on both ends, but it meets none of the 3di criteria - it's not a spur, bypass, or beltway.
I respect your opinion, but I would like to hear why you think it should be a 3di.

Am I the only one who has a hard time seeing that meme as a woman yelling at a cat? The vertical white line makes it VERY obvious that those are two completely unrelated images mashed together, making it look more like a contrast between two states.
To be fair - there are several knockoffs of the meme on imgflip, and not every one of them are well constructed - I just happened to have used of the badly constructed ones.

Yes. That we all pretty much know what standardized signs mean in the US.
It was Canada? I guessed as much, but wasn't sure.

Is that an open can, or a golf club bag with a club head sticking up out of it?
I seriously have no clue what that sign is supposed to prohibit.

The sign is saying "no littering", and the fine is $500 if you're caught.
And now I've learned that this sign isn't found in the US.

I've not seen that sign in BC either. The US has littering signs but they're written in text.

No littering?? Omg maybe it's because the meme put the idea of canned beans in my head... I thought it was something like... well, like "no hobos" , but more politically correct, obviously.
I wasn't already familiar with either sign, but I correctly guessed what each one meant before looking them up. Seemed somewhat obvious to me.
But I still liked the meme. Clever.
Saw this one today and got a chuckle out of it.

The meme is designed so that the phrase is mentioned in a sort of "in passing" way, unrelated to anything mentioned before or after it.
It's back in the news because of new information related to his death. Don't want to talk about it too much here because of the politics rule.

I think the Clintons would rather go after the people who make the memes.
The best Epstein meme I've seen involves replacing "We never deny a guest, even with the most ridiculous guest" (the Krusty Towers motto) with "Jeffrey Epstein did not kill himself" with a surprisingly accurate Mr. Krabs voice over.

I definitely feel like there's been a massive uptick in recent days, though. And 99% of the ones I've seen as of late have been variants of the woman yelling at a cat meme. It may have to do with the newer investigations in to Epstein and his death, them being the investigation in the two prison guards that have sense been arrested and Prince Andrew's possible ties to Epstein (who has since "stepped down from royal duties"), as well as the accusations against ABC for supposedly covering the whole thing up. When I see an Epstein meme it is almost always at the end of an otherwise interesting fact.

not to misinterpret arcane state regulations. They're too busy trying to figure out what their next official capacity will be once their three-and-out is up!

Funny, although even funnier is that the photoshopped image, I believe, is the interchange where the 110 and 105 freeways meet in LA.
The photoshopped image is quite prolific at this point, but I guess my roadgeek humour would have appreciated a photoshopped Texas interchange. Kind of a deep-cut meme at that point, I guess.

I have a Thomas Bros. street atlas and a street guide (a pocket version of the street atlas) of San Francisco, both dated 1953. Despite the many accolades given to them about their cartographic prowness, I have found several omissions on these maps: the Stanley St. extension (built 1952); the Alemaney St. overcrossing to Junipero Serra Blvd. (map pg.14); Pier 50 (Mission Rock) extension (completed 1950); and the cojoining of Piers 30 & 32 (built 1951). I realize this is a site about highways/freeways, but it pays to cross reference with different maps, as they can contradict each other even though they may be of the same area and date.

Not being terribly familiar with Charlotte, I looked this up in GSV. For those like me who don't understand, just before this exit is an interchange between I-277 and US 74, another freeway. Two lanes of I-277 from the left merge in with two lanes of US 74 from the right. If you are coming from I-277, and you want the 12th street exit, you have very little room to make two lane changes.

<img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/proxy/bRpP8eGfYRZujqWicgKnOdFMOcTgykHVC2mK9-HBuBAovljlD7x5hvzy5_-02wmYotovhqtHwgzaa32s5zgFC8c-5Q" alt="U.S. Route 666 | World of Signs"/>
For some reason, I can't get the image of US 666...now renumbered 491 in the 4 corners states region.

I made this meme after being inspired by an AARoads Facebook post the other day, and one of the gentlemen on there had this idea (I will credit him when I learn his username!).
Oh, New Jersey...

If you're able to find a workable image of the US 666 shield, that would been a great post. :-(

The credit card number is all over the internet now. Thousands of people will now try to use it; one of them is bound to guess the security code correctly. (It's probably 000, anyway.)
Side note: this card never expires, since 2000 didn't have a month 0.
Trying to figure out the issuer. Visa cards starts with a 4, Master Card starts with a 5, Discover starts with a 6, a few other 16-character cards start with a 7, and American Express uses a different system.
I attempted this one a few weeks ago

There has been a rifle or two in the living room in the past but not at present moment. I've been in California the last four years but firearms were far more common site when I lived in Florida and even more so in Arizona.

There is definitely the possibility of at least one of those things in the living room.
It's pretty easy to have three of them at one time. For example, if you have house guests who are an immigrant family, and y'all are having pie for dessert in the living room, then there would be several eyeballs, several slices of pie, and several resident aliens in the room.
A lit stick of dynamite, however, would hopefully be much less common an occurrence.

Considering how much of a creative crafts person my Wife is I'm sure there has been explosive theme decor that I'm just not remembering. I didn't really pay attention to the Halloween theme this year but last year there was a Zombie Rudolph mask (with drooping eye) floating about in the living room.

It's funny, I know a fellow who bought a Tesla and he said one of the things that you don't think of and that becomes apparent only after several months is how you have to take the initiative to clean your windows by hand at home because you won't be using the squeegy at the gas station, so your windows will get filthy if you don't either buy your own squeegy or otherwise clean them by hand.

Yeeeeeep. There's a subtle difference between New Mexico suck and Oklahoma suck I can't quite put my finger on. But they both suck.
Arizona isn't too great either at the moment because it seems like half the signs are in Clearview and half of them are in FHWA Series, which is worse than them all being in Clearview. I can handle Clearview when it's done to the consistency Texas does it, but rolling the random font die on each panel (even different signs for the same interchange!) is extremely annoying.
In contrast, I would rank Nevada's freeway signage somewhere in the top 10, at least going by what I've seen in metro Las Vegas. There are a few weird bugs here and there but they're infrequent enough I don't have a problem with them. Hell, Clark County does a better job than most states do.

You explained it well before:

ODOT signage is æsthetically garbage, violates norms of both graphic design and traffic control, and hurts your eyes to look at. But it's almost always there, and it's usually complete and mostly correct. ODOT signage sucks, but you can at least navigate with it. NMDOT sometimes can't even manage to clear that simple bar, to the point that it starts to negatively impact navigability. So there's a pretty good argument that NMDOT is worse than ODOT.
Well, by "can't quite put my finger on" I mean, in instances where NMDOT has a sign there that is "correct", it tends to suck in a way that Oklahoma signage doesn't.
Some NMDOT practices I saw that I couldn't imagine Oklahoma doing, but I'm not sure why I can't imagine Oklahoma doing it:
- Two consecutive off ramps to the same frontage road with the same signed exit number
- A gore point sign with the same thin aluminum and square perforated posts as a conventional-road sign, with just the text "EXIT/XXX" and no arrow
- A two-lane pullthru sign with a single arrow pointed directly at the lane line
One thing I can put my finger on is that directional banners appear to be entirely optional in New Mexico, even on Interstates.
The random font thing is something I could say about ISTHA. They don't do Clearview anymore, but a significant number of Clearview signs are still posted.
The cheap exit gore sign thing is totally an IDOT thing. Though at least they remember the arrow, even if it's an ugly arrow.
A lot of NMDOT signage looks like it might have been installed by a one-armed teenager with a ground rod driver. Oklahoma at least tends to erect signs that don't look like they're about to fall over.

My experience driving in New Mexico is very limited. Since the 1990s, I've only driven 425 miles in the state, and on just two trips. And yet, just in that small number of miles, I've seen crap like this:

...and those are just some that I've personally driven past.

The funny thing is while it's always good fun to make fun of OkDOT, who clearly knows what a good road sign looks like because they accidentally make them from time to time, by the time we had made it through New Mexico the second time, it almost felt bad making fun of NMDOT. Sort of like making fun of a special needs child or something like that. New Mexico has a lot of problems as a state; it's one of the poorest states in the union. Its road sign problems seem like they might be a symptom of some greater trouble beneath the surface.
And NMDOT occasionally does some quirky, charming things, like welcoming you to a DOT district with all the sincerity and flourish of a state line crossing, or accidentally recommissioning US-66 because they seem to have forgotten that it was decommissioned. And some of their errors are just kind of sad, like when they manage to misspell the name of the largest city in the state somehow. (Granted it is a long and complicated name, but you'd think they'd have seen it enough. Maybe if they'd stop signing Santa Rosa and Tucumcari as controls they'd get more practice at typing it out...)

Yes, newly-completed roads in Oklahoma are generally quite good, as long as you don't look at the signs! But the tradeoffs are
- We are a fairly middle-class state, so we have to cut a lot of corners that other states wouldn't (the new I-235/I-44 interchange still has two loop ramps with a c/d road in between)
- It takes an exorbitant amount of time to get projects done because ODOT is not allowed to issue revenue bonds, and so can only work with money doled out to them by the Legislature, which isn't much because our Constitution requires a higher vote threshold in the Legislature to raise taxes than to lower them (the aforementioned interchange took 10 years to build)
- During construction, OkDOT has a penchant for "cattle chute" work zones, and they can be very, very dangerous. It's best to just avoid them entirely unless hitting other cars, Jersey barriers, or both is your idea of a good time. Two-thirds of the accidents I've had have been in OkDOT work zones.

In New Mexico, we had a "is this bridge closed or not?" moment. Decided to go for it, and it was fine (the intent was probably to just close one lane of a two-lane road, but the signage was ambiguous), but you don't get those kind of...erm...thrills in any other state.
I had the pleasure of working in New Mexico for close to three years during past employment. New Mexico is probably a ton ten scenic state, but the Highway inventory is all over the place. Hawaii is really the only state I've been to that even approaches the weirdness and haggard standards of New Mexico. Really New Mexico is virgin territory for anyone in the community looking to document something largely untouched. I wish that I had taken the time to get serious by road photos when I actually worked in New Mexico, I have rarely had occasion to visit this past decade.
What makes Oklahoma highways seem poor is that it's between Kansas and Texas, both of which tend to have good-quality roads (and signage too). Oklahoma might take a while to fix its broken highways, but they do eventually get around to it. As for signage, I'd characterize it more as "quirky" than "awful" (except for that Craig County sign, may it rest in peace and live in infamy). But New Mexico, on the other hand...
Driving in New Mexico is quite a bit like driving in actual Mexico. Its roads are maybe halfway Mexican, in my opinion. Signage tends to be spotty, inconsistent, and often unhelpful–all hallmarks of Mexican signage. Pavement quality tends to be bumpy, conditions tend to be dusty, and speed limits tend to be under-posted and/or overly cautious and/or seemingly random–all hallmarks of Mexican highways. You might get a wide, divided, four-lane highway; you might get a decent two-lane highway with shoulders; you might get a narrow shoulder-less mess of patchwork and crumbling asphalt; who know till you get there!
The zia doesn't even guarantee you'll get pavement! How's that for inconsistent?
The zia doesn't even guarantee a graded road sometimes.

Do you have an example of one of these DOT district crossing signs from NM? I'd love to see one.
Sure thing!
Yes, it really has six legs; that's not a stitching error. Check out how much bigger the district boundary sign is than the county line! (https://www.google.com/maps/@34.9914968,-105.2912646,3a,41.3y,139.64h,89.22t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s23SFiJunI6TFi6bWL9-GcQ!2e0!7i16384!8i8192)
Thanks for sharing. I'd love to know what the average person thinks when they see a sign like that. I'd imagine quite confused. Also, I wouldn't mind if we had those in Illinois for when you leave the clutches of IDOT District 1.
Speaking of Illinois, it's funny that you say OK is a "middle-class" state that leaves things like loop ramps and C/D roads, and yet there's plenty of examples of just that from Illinois, a supposedly not middle-class state. I know we're all aware of the budgetary shortfalls of IDOT, but we have more loop ramps than I could count. The ramps near my office are one example of a newly built C/D road with loop ramps and it's constantly bottlenecks all traffic right there. It's also dangerous. I feel like I'm going to rear-end or get rear-ended by someone almost every time, no matter what time of day it is.
For the record, it's this one here: https://goo.gl/maps/rtanTbbw7Lwp9CDGA (Same one I wrote about regarding the lack of a ramp meter)
Regarding the highway district boundary signs, I can tell you as someone who works for a highway district and is responsible for dealing with complaints from the public that I wish we had such things in Kentucky. Often, we will get communications about issues that should go to another district office. I keep a copy of the other district office numbers near my desk because I have to refer to it often.

So... putting 2 and 2 together... New Mexico has those signs because so many people complain about their terrible roads.

I suspect they probably don't help your counterparts in NM nearly as much as you'd hope they would.

Add Louisiana to that list. Next year, DOTD is going to overhaul exit 84 on I-20 in Ruston. Along with a brand new overpass (built in 1959!), they will be installing
4 (yes, 1, 2, 3,
4!) circles of Satan there. One for each Service road, and one for the on & off ramps.

I used to take this exit on my way home from work. If you zoom out, there are two more as you head west. So yeah, I would drive through five roundabounts in about one and a half miles. It sounds ridiculous, but honestly they aren't difficult to manage or anything.
I'm not sure where the roundabout hate comes from. I'd love to see more roundabouts in Illinois. I can think of several locations where they would be beneficial, one in particular in my head where there's already ample space to build one.

Illinois has struck me as one state that was very slow in adding roundabouts to its arsenal of intersection designs. Maybe the town square in Benton scared them off.

We get some new things, but usually in very small doses. And even in reconstructions, the old configuration is put right back. No DDIs or SPUIs on the Tri-State. No D1 FYAs, even on brand-new signals. I can think of only 3 roundabouts near me, only 1 of which is IDOT.

It's like WISDOT went gaga over roundabouts when they upgraded US 41 to interstate status. I had to go through this mess (https://www.google.com/maps/@44.5394047,-88.0764896,1556m/data=!3m1!1e3) just a few miles south of Lineville when visiting my brother. I like roundabouts generally, but I got completely turned around trying to navigate this from NB I-41 to WB CTH RK in the rain after dark (that's six roundabouts in about a half mile). Fortunately, he moved to Albuquerque during the pandemic so I can drive to visit him again and I no longer need to navigate that mess.

I think they have determined that they will no longer do three lane roundabouts due to people getting turned around there.

I guess that one is equivalent to just saying it's best to drive the highest number in whatever category over the speed limit you are going. Like 19 in the 10-20 over or 29 in the 20-30 over, without hitting the next category. But some states include the exact amount over in the fine formula such as $200 + $5 per mph over the limit, so that wouldn't always work.
