Title: JMoses24's Road Pictures
Post by: JMoses24 on January 20, 2013, 04:45:09 AM
I will be posting my road photos in this here thread. Many of these will be from the pedestrian perspective. I do not drive. (It's a long story, but the short version: I'm paralyzed below my waist, and have issues with hand tremors, which are treated like seizures by the state.)

I'll start it with some scenes from my hometown of Florence, KY.

Non-cutout I-71/75 signage. This is roughly half a mile before you reach the ramps between Mall Road and the interstate, which is only a half interchange because you cannot access I-71/75 South from Mall Road, nor is there direct access from I-75/71 North to Mall Road.

Look, it's a state name shield for I-75! I-71/75 at the Kentucky Route 18 interchange. There are several more state name shields at this interchange (at least four, maybe a couple more).

I also put this in the "Worst of Road Signs" Thread, but I wanted to place it here, too. This is at the intersection of KY 18 and Mall Road. What's up with this font? Is this just the really bold standard font, or does this not belong here?

I saw a number of those around the various construction areas around Florence back in October, there seems to be no lack of reminders that there's an interstate nearby.

...now I feel guilty that I don't get out of my car enough when a' travelling (although usually most of my roading about comes on Mondays, when I either have to get to my weekly work assignment, or Fridays, with a possible race-to-the-clock to make my flight on time).

No need to feel guilty. We all have different ways to do our roadgeeking. The majority of mine just happens to be done by wheelchair or bus. Which, in fact, I did a bit of this today in Cincinnati and will post the photos at some point in the next couple days.

A few recent photos taken from the roads of Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. The first two were taken last Wednesday, as my brother and I drove from Florence to Sharonville, Ohio and back.

I-75 between Dixie Highway and Kyles Lane.

A little further up, this is the view coming down the hill toward downtown. This will change as the Brent Spence reconstruction begins this decade.

This last one was taken Saturday, and is a photo taken from a Cincinnati Metro bus. It's at the interchange between I-75, Central Parkway (aka US 27/US 127), and I-74.

I took several photos this afternoon while running a couple of errands. All of these were taken in a couple of blocks in Florence.

First up: Gah. A bad sign on KY 18 near my old high school.

Obviously, this is more the normal style, just a few hundred feet away:

The city of Florence is fond of doing this with road construction signs, where the construction is actually on a nearby street:

This used to be a named street, believe it or not. It was called Shawn Alexander Way in honor of the former Seahawk.

I think this sign needs to be fixed. I'm going to let Florence Public Works know about it tomorrow, but as of 6PM, it was hanging this way.

It was established to me that yes, it appears to be Series F.

I still don't know what the font on the A. W. Neltner Way sign was. My guess would have been all caps Arial.

Definitely Series F seeing how wide the "8" is for example. That's quite a rarity for route shields of any kind using Series F. I can tell the difference with E Modified to F in the thickness and stroke of the "8".

These three images were taken this afternoon.

I-75 and KY 18 shields near the Walmart on Houston Road. Yep, that's a state name shield.

These next two were recent installs. Besides being Clearview, they outline destinations in nearby Burlington pretty well.

Several recent photos here. I apologize, the first two are blurry as all hell.  :banghead: I will likely get out there and replace those two photos this weekend.

(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi592.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ftt8%2FJMos24_2009%2FIMG_20130425_205110_zps66e33131.jpg&hash=235bd138e85d98715c1e6b216b91df19931c7f5f) (http://s592.photobucket.com/user/JMos24_2009/media/IMG_20130425_205110_zps66e33131.jpg.html)

This was taken one night last week. Turfway Road at I-75/71. This is an interesting interchange. The left lane of Southbound (technically westbound) Turfway physically splits off and becomes two lanes to the ramp to I-75/71 North, actually going between the through lanes of Turfway, as seen here:

(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi592.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ftt8%2FJMos24_2009%2FIMG_20130425_205214_zps003f0140.jpg&hash=abd3da7a6af4261797527523fde81d622ec576db) (http://s592.photobucket.com/user/JMos24_2009/media/IMG_20130425_205214_zps003f0140.jpg.html)

Next is this very recent (in the last week) install of I-75 and I-71 shields, this is east of the location of the third photo in this thread, coming off Mall Road:

(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi592.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ftt8%2FJMos24_2009%2FIMG_20130429_195934_zps12092d41.jpg&hash=7f85d34e1ff6e62c9a149c137541c29254dcfcc4) (http://s592.photobucket.com/user/JMos24_2009/media/IMG_20130429_195934_zps12092d41.jpg.html)

Lastly is this. Too much whitespace on this sign... Dixie Highway at Goodridge Drive. More a sign for pedestrians than for drivers, though.

(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi592.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ftt8%2FJMos24_2009%2FIMG_20130406_175957_zpsf6ef7fd8.jpg&hash=a5d5e734ec695228f018722a1dfc7c718bd903dc) (http://s592.photobucket.com/user/JMos24_2009/media/IMG_20130406_175957_zpsf6ef7fd8.jpg.html)

I am adding multiple photos, taken this morning (10-1-13), as myself and my friend Jessica scouted a location for the upcoming Cincinnati meet. Big thanks go to her for indulging my interest in roadgeeking.

First two are from Point Pleasant Road in northern Boone County, Kentucky. Notice that this is not a 2 lane road. It's barely wide enough for ONE car.

The rest of these are various locations along I-75 in Hamilton County.

Most of the photos above are approaching Hopple Street (Exit 3) and I-74 (Exit 4). These are being reconstructed as part of the Mill Creek Expressway project from the Western Hills Viaduct at exit 2 to Paddock Road (Exit 9).

(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2F4vTl7gD.jpg&hash=c359717c4d1dad7f6d23d901c55b318ea208f7bf) (http://imgur.com/4vTl7gD)

The one above is as we left the location in Lockland. I barely got it, but I am fairly sure that's a button copy I-75 sign over there on the other side of the intersection of Shepherd Lane and Lockland Road, just north of the terminus of I-75 Exit 13's southbound ramps.

(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2FnX9LWjZ.jpg&hash=3df4bac18b9fe412d3e073ccfd78e7f0efd073c0) (http://imgur.com/nX9LWjZ)

This one is of southbound Exit 12, the Reading/Lockland exit. This is slated to be shut down as a result of the "Through the Valley" project in the next 10 years.

Southbound Exit 10, Ronald Reagan Highway (OH State Route 126)/Galbraith Road. This is also likely to be reconstructed as part of the Through the Valley project.

Several more photos from yesterday. I have brightened a couple of these due to the dreary skies yesterday.

Some (somewhat?) new signage was installed over I-471 Southbound at the KY 8 exit the weekend of September 27-30. A better view will be had on the upcoming Cincinnati meet but I took some photos from the riverfront in the meantime. The first is from Newport, below the I-471 bridge.

(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2FHgER0JA.jpg%3F1&hash=46ab2183b08a95d0700a2ce8b9d2f623eda7350e) (http://imgur.com/HgER0JA)

The middle sign on this sign bridge reads "Newport/Bellevue Next 2 Exits". That was also installed over the September 27-30 weekend. This is looking up from the Cincinnati riverfront. Again, I could get better photos of these during the upcoming meet.

(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2F3IQd2fm.jpg%3F1&hash=48e50c6a9a807901303b73ad5e9d6c953a355fbf) (http://imgur.com/3IQd2fm)

These next few are various scenes from downtown Covington and Newport. Note the damaged/slightly misaligned I-75 and KY 17 signs in the first photo, taken at Fourth and Greenup Streets in downtown Covington. The latter three are from Fourth Street in Newport approaching the Veterans Memorial Bridge carrying KY 8 over the Licking River.

This one, I'm singling out. Shouldn't these TO banners be blue? Fourth and Columbia Streets, Newport, KY.

Posted this in the "Erroneous Signs" thread, but since I took the photo, I'm posting it here, too. This photo was taken this morning. I had some time to kill, and was snapping some photos of road-related things. In this photo, I'm on Eastbound Third Street approaching the Clay Wade Bailey Bridge, which carries US 42 and...Ohio 127?!? No, that should be US 127.

This also serves as the northern terminus of US 25.

Does the blue SOUTH banner apply to all 4 route designations?  Seems confusing. At a minimum the white shields should have their own black on white banner.

US 42 confuses things by going from East/West in Kentucky to North/South in Ohio. Otherwise, the other three are north-south.

I-75 and I-71 should have a "TO" or an "ALT" banner above them.  However, I have seen signs such as this since I moved here in 1994.

Taken from a TANK bus 11/29. These shields are huge, the arrows are way small. About the only thing to spec seems to be the "TO" signage. This is grainy, which I apologize for. Again...bus.

I believe that is a temporary condition with the construction in the interchange.

Some new photos will be forthcoming today, as there have been some changes to the state route system in my county. To wit:

1) Aero Parkway has been designated as an extension of KY 1017 to the west of Florence.
2) In turn, they also took KY 717 and extended that designation up Turfway Road over the former KY 1017 to the north of Florence, also multiplexed with 1017 for a short distance between its former ending at Turfway and the east end of Aero Parkway.
3) Another road, Ted Bushelman Blvd, has been designated in totality as KY 3159.

Good to hear from you again.  In fact, just yesterday my wife asked if you had posted anything recently.  I told her that, no, I had not seen any posts from you for a couple of months, probably due to our weather situation for the past few weeks and that you are not able to "just get out" due to you being in a wheelchair.

These are excellent changes as more drivers are taking Aero Pkwy from Florence to Burlington (and vice versa).  It is a great way to avoid the Florence Mall traffic on KY 18 and the Wal-Mart/Meijer traffic on Houston Road.

So, will KY 1017 still retain its North/South designation even though you will be heading south on Aero (and KY 1017 would be designated North) toward KY 18 or will it be East/West?

I just returned home, and am endeavoring to get these posted in the next little bit, but I can go ahead and answer this question now before posting the photos.

KY SR 1017 is designated as North/South at least as far as the intersection with Ted Bushelman Boulevard. I didn't go further than that, because I was already having problems fighting the wind (which was pushing 40-45 mph in gusts at times) and wanted to be able to make it home under my own power. (My back still locked up as soon as I got in the door.) Otherwise, I might have rode all the way to the west end of Aero. I will go back and photograph the west end of KY 1017 on a warmer/less windy day this spring.

Yep, I wanted to know when the designation had been put in place, since I hadn't been to the area in awhile. The last couple weeks are the first time I've been able to be observant like I usually am. I first noticed the KY 1017 designation while en route to my pharmacy to get my wheelchair repaired (another reason I haven't done much roadgeeking recently...the chair's brakes were haywire, and if I was gonna be out, I wasn't going to lollygag around like I would on a geeking trip like today's). When I had been out that way in January, that designation hadn't been in effect.

Here we go. This is fixing to be a two-parter most likely. They won't be in any semblance of order, and I apologize for that. There's just too damn many.

Also, I shrunk some of them to 800x600, thus they look kinda skewed. Click through to see it as it should look.

If they switched directions, they would have to reverse the milepoints. That would be reflected in the official orders listed at the end of the SPRS listings for that county (Boone, right?).
Title: Re: JMoses24's Road Pictures

Reviewing the photos again, I noticed that KYDOT signed KY 717's concurrency incorrectly.  It should be a "wrong way concurrency" as the cardinal directions on KY 1017 have been switched (KY 717 should be signed NORTH in the last photo).

I'm sure the milepoints will be revised/changed as KY 1017 is not on the same routing as before.  I have never seen any mileposts along the original route since I moved here 19 years ago.  Since I have been here, KY 1017's former north end point has changed three times.  It originally ended at Donaldson Rd. (KY 236).  It was then extended over the rest of Turfway Rd., made a left at Dolwick, and ended at Mineola Pike.  When Dolwick was built next to I-275 to Erlanger-Crescent Springs Rd., KY 1017 was truncated back to the end of Turfway.

Yes, this is Boone County.

I didn't notice any reversal of mileposts. So either they did and I just didn't notice, or the directions weren't supposed to be reversed.

KY 1017 (Turfway Rd/Aero Pkwy) is now signed East-West.  The KY 717 concurrency is still signed wrong.  North should be signed South and vice versa.  Also the BGS just west of I-71/75 still has KY 1017 South.  It needs to be changed to East.

I didn't get a whole lot of usable photos on my Northeast Roadtrip, but I did get a couple in the Pittsburgh area and a few from Connecticut along I-95 coming back. I got more sunset stuff than roads in CT.

Connecticut along I-95 southbound the night of May 21:

Pittsburgh, coming into the city the next morning around 6:15 AM on I-376 approaching Squirrel Hill, which was a total cluster-foxtrot.

The one photo that struck me as odd was the one in Norwood on I-71. Why is Cincinnati listed as a control city when you pretty much are in Cincinnati? I feel like Louisville (to I-75/Lexington) would have been a better choice, or "Downtown".

Do you think that those signs should say something else or something more accurate like "downtown Louisville"?

Since March, the reassurance markers on Turfway have been changed and the road is now signed east-west. However, the BGS on eastbound Turfway Road (shown upthread) has not yet. I have put in a query to HB's friend and colleague Nancy Wood at KYTC District 6 regarding that.

If you are mentioning the BGS's on eastbound Norwood Lateral, at that point you are still in Norwood.  The BGS's on the west end of the Norwood Lateral for I-75 list Lexington because you are inside the Cincinnati city limits there.

Been a long time since I've been across the Lateral. Are those signs old, or have they been replaced recently?

They've been replaced. The old signs were button copy and did not have exit tabs (heck, they weren't even NUMBERED).

Recently I was in the area of Hopple Street and I-75 in Cincinnati. These photos were taken from the White Castle at MLK Drive and Central Parkway.

Friday night, I was on my way home from downtown Cincinnati, and I saw this. This new install is located at Turfway Road on Dixie Highway.

This photo was posted in the "Damaged Signs" thread...the sign was apparently hit by a car. This has been replaced, I'm told.

This is either really new, or has been there a long time. West Galbraith Road just west of Vine Street/Springfield Pike (which is OH State Route 4) in the Hartwell neighborhood of Cincinnati.

One new assembly, and one that's been around for a few years in tonight's photo set.

Some older signs over Main Street at Second. Here, Main is known as Joe Nuxhall Way, named after the former Cincinnati Reds pitcher and broadcaster. Please note that the U.S. 50 shield is actually just one that would've been placed on a BGS. (Though I would have been pleased as punch had it been an old cutout.)

A couple from Covington on 10/19/2015:

Fourth and Philadelphia Streets, downtown Covington, KY. That's an old, faded, state name Interstate 71 shield up there on the wire next to a comparatively new I-75 shield. However, those both may soon be unnecessary. In the first image, please note the ground-mounted assembly pointing for the same routes.

Covington used to have a crapload of spanwire-mounted signs, including some very very old US 25-42-127 markers on the hill leading down into town. Here's one of them, long-since gone.

I remember these, but not that one specifically. They were definitely around in the early '80s.

I still can't see why New London or New Haven can't be used on their I-95 South sign. Those ramps are part of a big circle (of sorts) which involves I-95, US Route 6 and the northern terminus of RI Route 10, which one takes south towards Cranston, RI.

So, I was out and about this week, and knew this set of signs was in an area where I had to go. Both are error shields (should be US 27 and US 127, respectively). This is Central Parkway just north of the point where that road turns from east-west to north-south.

I just noticed that was reused... the only question is whether that's a '61 spec or a '48.

Is that a TV studio behind the old street light pole? I've never been in Cincinnati, but know they have channels 5, 9, 12 and 19 for starters.

That is WCET-TV 48, which is the PBS station. Additionally,  WVXU-FM and WGUC-FM (NPR) are also located in that facility.

Thanks! The closest TV studio to me is WVIT-TV (NBC) channel 30 of New Britain, in the Hartford/New Haven market. It's directly off Exit 40 westbound of I-84 in West Hartford. They have a New Britain Avenue (CT Route 71 in parts) mailing address...despite that being on the other side of I-84!

Zoom out slightly and WestFarms Mall, which opened in 1974, will show up. CT Route 9 and the stack are immediately to the west.

I now see these every day as I am now working on North Bend Rd. just off Exit 14 on I-74.

I do like the reconfiguration of the NB I-75 to I-74 interchange.  Longer off-ramp and a better merge with traffic coming from Central Pkwy and Hopple St.  The I-75 on-ramp from Hopple now stays east of the interchange and uses the renmant of the old on-ramp from Central Pkwy by Cincinnati State.  The ramp from I-74 east to Central Pkwy was mostly demolished due to this new configuration.  Perhaps someone could add a GoogleMaps scan, when available, to the Unused Highways section of Wikipedia showing this.

I haven't yet had reason to use either the 74W exit or the ramp from Hopple. How's the merge between the two ramps to get on 74W configured? How far past the exit from 75N does the Hopple access ramp merge in?

The two-lane   off ramp from I-75N to I-74W begins just a tad north of the Hopple overpass.  A two-lane ramp comes down from Hopple.  The left lane merges onto the I-74W ramp just north of the Monmouth St overpass.  The right lane sort of "hugs" the Central Pkwy wall until where the old on-ramp to I-75N was.  From there, the rebuilt on-ramp uses most of the original ramp that also carries the merge from I-74E.  It enters I-75 at the same location it always has--pretty much under the Ludlow Ave bridge.  You can see this new configuration on Google Maps.  Use the map part, the satellite still shows the old configuration.  You can see some of the Hopple ramps on satellite, though.

A couple of recent photos... after a number of years where I didn't really take any. These were on an excursion along the Oklahoma River North trail's recent extension eastward along (and mostly south of) I-40.

I-40 at I-35. Looking north onto the ramp from W 40 to S 35. No guardrails separate the ramp from the trail. Yikes.
