Strange, perhaps... but, given the angle at which the roadways meet, it seems almost ingeniously efficient.

I've seen those in Omaha, Nebraska at a few intersections, like this one at 168th & Center:

And the ones I remember there do not have angle issues.

They seem to like those in Brownwood.  Here's one at the main highway junction.

There's another one like it where US 183 goes north in Early and at the junction of US 67 and SH 279 nearby.

For something like this, you'd expect to have a few green signs (along with the traffic signals) on it!
