Texas 77 -> Louisiana 78 (hopefully I'm not boxing us in with US 79)

I had thought about writing a program to figure out the longest "hello neighbor" chain in the US -- but the number of possible paths is a combinatorial explosion.

In the 6 New England states, using state routes from 1-100 only, there are 5,539 combinations. All the longest ones start with RI 7 and end with NH 28. (US 1 through 6 are "in the way" for most states, and no state has a Route 29.) That's manageable.

Add New York, routes 1 through 30 only, and the number of combinations increases to more than 13 million. The longest chain is still 7 though 28, but many more paths run through NY.

Add the rest of the New York state routes to 100, and ... I don't know how long it takes to run. A rough estimate based on NE+NY routes to 30 is about 1.73^n, where n is the number of routes. 1.73^100 is about 6.4 * 10^23, a little more than a mole. All 50 states, 100 routes, might be about (1.73 * 50/7)^100 or 8 * 10^107. We could probably refine this estimate based on route density, number of neighbors, and so on.

Instead of a brute force "search everything", a bounded search (say, starting from LA 78) will be quicker. Then most of the work is data entry (listing all the routes for each state). But the algorithm itself was the more interesting part.

Hopping over to Missouri for 19. (KY ---> MO)

Dammit, I wish I knew about this thread earlier. I probably would've occupied MO 19.
I am inactive for a while now my dudes. Good associating with y'all.

Unfortunately I didn't have anything ground-mounted for TX 79 except the error below (should be US 79).  I can delete the previous post if someone has a legitimate TX 79 not on a BGS.

I can take us back to Louisiana for 82, which should allow us to move back to Texas for 83.

Rule proposal: If 48 hours passes without anyone making a valid play, any player can play one of the following:

A) Route 1 from the last state played.
B) A US or Interstate highway matching the next number in a neighboring state.

(Yes, I realize that these two cases don't necessarily ensure that the game would be restarted.)

It looks like 89s in Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Wyoming offer options to continue, but I don't have any of those.

Glad someone found a way to move this forward.  I know Wisconsin and Kentucky have good 92's, so here's Illinois 91:

IL-091-078ER by Paul Drives, on Flickr

Illinois has a state route 94 in case the thread stays in this region.  Many other states won't because of the proximity of I-94.  Thinking ahead, note that the route of WI-92 and MN-93 will lead to a dead end.
