The US Supreme Court ruled in favor of New Jersey today, ending a 7 year legal battle that permits sports betting to take place across the country.  Previously, the US only permitted sports betting in 4 states. While Nevada, and Las Vegas in particular, is well known for allowing betting to take place on all sports, Delaware was allowed to have parley betting for NFL Football games as well.  (Parleys are when you bet on at least 3 games on a single bet/ticket, and you need to win all 3 games in order to win on your ticket.)  2 other states were allowed by the US to have sports betting but never actually permitted it.

The overall effect for Vegas will probably be minimal, but may be lucrative for the states that permit it.  In NJ, it's expected sports betting will be allowed at horse tracks, Atlantic City casinos, and eventually for online gambling within the state.  Monmouth Park had already built a sports betting room a few years ago hoping sports betting would be permitted; they believe they can have it up and running within a few weeks.

The thread title is misleading. Sports betting is legal only in the states that allow it. Not all of them do.

More accurate to say that sports betting is legal in more states now than before the Supremes spoke this morning. And others might jump on the bandwagon. But don't bet on, say, Utah doing so.

The decision is, obviously, correct.  Imagine a law allowing Florida, but not California, to grow oranges; or Michigan, but not Ohio, to make cars.

The issues in the states will be two, IMHO.  One is those who, like NJ, want to limit it to casinos and race tracks; and those who will seek to have it more open via apps, computers, or lottery terminals (most brands of lottery terminals were designed to accomodate sports gambling easily).  The other will be the desire of the leagues, and thus the players, to get a toke in the form of an "integrity fee".  They, already being paid millions via the cost of sports TV networks and receiving huge stadium subsidies, should be told to pound sand.

The roll out will be just like that for a lottery or casino.  If you are old enough to remember those campains, this will look just like that.  Why should ___ian $$ go across the border to ____istan, lets legalize it here, will be the mantra.

As to the $$, like the previous 50 saviors of state budgets (lottery, raise taxes, casinos, raise taxes, pot, raise taxes, toll roads, raise taxes, ......) the capacity of government to waste money on things governments should not be doing is always greater than the money taken in.

True, you're right about that (Original title was 'Sports Betting now Legal in all 50 states").  I'll revise the thread title to show that states can enact sports betting if they choose to do so.
