That's cool to see.  I'm kind of surprised that it took Caltrans this long to do an interview with you.

Very cool. Congrats and well deserved.

Dan makes an interesting point at the article's close: "If there's one takeaway, it's that your work can influence your hobbies, and your hobbies can teach you for your work."

And IIRC the CA Highways site comes from his Usenet roads list, so it predates the web itself.

In looking up something for Gribblenation's 20th, I found a early post in ca.driving from 1992: https://groups.google.com/g/ca.driving/c/zsafEZUofCU/m/kUzV5pUqRtoJ
I also found a posting showing the list in a closer to a website format from 1994: https://groups.google.com/forum/print/msg/ca.driving/td_8AN7smU0/L41QB0NHsiEJ?ctz=5809948_88_88_104280_84_446940
The first version of the website was up on Pacificnet in 1996.

As for predating the web itself? I forget when Netscape started, but that was around 1992. I was still reading news with rn then. I've actually be on the nets since ~1978, when I got my first account at MIT-ITS by telnetting from UCLA, where I was an undergrad.

Nicely done with the interview and write-up!

It's always nice to see when the news or highway agency acknowledges the existence of us roadgeeks in pieces like this.
