In some areas of New York City as of present day, a crosswalk set-up exists that reminds me of an emergency set-up (e.g., firehouse).

Above, are three different views of this set-up from Brooklyn, New York. It was installed sometime in 2011. The three-section 12" heads flash amber until a pedestrian pushes a nearby button, while the cross street has single-section heads that flash red 24/7.

When a button is pressed, the traffic signals that control the main drag change from flashing amber to steady amber. Then, to steady red. The pedestrian signals then show the "WALK" indication. Once this terminates, the 12" heads rest again on flashing amber.

Others that exist today have been in use for over eight years.
