How many people out there are ziney? By that, I mean people who are the type who'd write a zine.
I don't appear ziney at first glance, but deep down, I'm as ziney as they come.
You may have family members who are ziney. You may have some who are not very ziney, but accept others' zininess. You may have some who are too stodgy and unbending to ever accept people being ziney.
Be ziney!
not
I wrote an e-zine for our local blues society from 2015-2017.
Zines seem to very much (have) be(en) a Gen X thing. I don't know of anyone my age that has been interested in them.
What's a zine?
These days forums and blogs serve the purpose that zines did in the 80s and 90s.
Zines aren't necessarily digital.
I would have been ziney if I'd been born 5 or 10 years earlier.
Didn't REM do a song about this? "Ziney Happy People?"
I might have been ziney. Not too ziney though.

Glad I'm not the only one who thought of that song.
I also remember REM guest-starring on a TV show, and one of the characters asking them "Am I a shiny happy person?" and them answering simply "No." I could have sworn it was part of the Simpsons episode
Homer the Moe, but I can't find that interaction anywhere in the script. Hmmm.....
"Zine" is short for "magazine," so it's pronounced "zeen."

Did you even bother to look up the definition?
"I.... wanna publish zines.... and rage against machines...." (at about 1:47)

I just assumed it was "publish scenes," but "zines" makes a lot more sense.

True, but seeing the word "ziney" with the word "people" just begged for that one-liner.

At the risk of stomping the joke to death...I just don't even look at the word "zine" and think of it rhyming with "shine."
I also don't look at "GIF" and think it's pronounced "jif."
I assumed it rhymed with shine, even after looking up the definition and finding out it comes from magazine.
Apparently, February is when Tim's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of zining... https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=22177.0

I've always pronounced it with the soft "g." Like "
GIra
Ffe."
I knew how "'zine" is pronounced and actually read a few issues of "The Last Word" online back in the day.
Only contrarians pronounce .gif with a soft g. :D
Gif is an acronym, for graphics interchange format. So hard G for me. Despite what the creator of the format says.

Well, there you go. He's only slightly less of a douchebag than Colbert, but they're both douchebags, so I don't watch either of them.

Lol fantastic. Colbert is the only late show host that makes me laugh, although he does go a bit overboard with Trump-bashing sometimes. All of his other segments are great though.

Because pronouncing it "gif" rather than "jif" is going to cause offense to anyone? (Except for people who toiled long hours at the Skippy peanut butter plant.)

You have a singular wit, Mr. Elkins.
I don't care much for Fallon either, though for reasons that are probably diametrically opposed to Belkins'.
Doesn't take a rocket scientist to see why he doesn't like Stewart or Colbert.

So, when you watched them, some of the puke stayed inside? And it's still there? I stand by my earlier statement: that sounds unpleasant.
As long as you've eaten recently, you're always full of puke that has never finished puking.
Quote from: Merriam Webster
puke
verb
English Language Learners Definition of puke (Entry 1 of 2)
informal : to empty what is in your stomach through your mouth
When I eat, I almost never
begin to empty what is in my stomach through my mouth. Therefore, it cannot be said that my puking is left unfinished: it never started.
In some cultures, they only eat vomit.
pooing is cool

I don't know if the pronunciation of the letter in the original word is really all that relevant, otherwise, for example,
laser would sound more like "lazzer." Also,
NATO would be "natto," the "E" in
BASE jumping would be pronounced,
CAPTCHA would not have a "ch" sound, and so on.
The issue really derives from one of the various quirks of English. In words of Germanic origin, "g" stays as "game" in words that start with "ge-" and "gi-," like
get and
give. But in words of Latin or Greek origin, the g pronunciation changes to "j" as in "geometry" and "engine." (You can find exceptions, but they aren't common. Then, there's words like "judgment," where there's a "j" sound, even though there is no "i" or "e" after the "g.") Anyway, because "gif" is an acronym, it isn't really either Germanic or Classical, and so we're kind of stuck.

Hey, this is a fun thread.
I knew there was a thread I forgot to post to when I returned!
Zine is pronounced like "zeen", as in short for magazine.
My middle school art teacher was big into zines. We all had to make one (and then make copies and distribute), and I did mine about a calculator. More specifically, a little red calculator with a flip-open stand that I had found somewhere and decided to keep. It was a bit of a joke for an art project, but ended up being kind of fun. I rode my bike around the neighborhood and dropped a copy of my zine into the street every so often. Some of the neighbors picked up a copy; I never heard what they thought! :-D
And just for the record, no, I do not consider myself to be a ziney person. :-P
