Yet, Whole Foods seems to be a drain on Amazon (as I called it when they bought Whole Foods). Amazon just cannot run grocery nor can it do brick-and-mortar all that well.

Didn't Amazon's other services start as a drain as well? It practically seems to be standard operating procedure to enter a market at a loss in order to establish dominance.

Yes. As a matter of fact, i don't think Amazon as a company started earning a profit until very recently.
And most if not all of that profit is through their web services (which run a large swath of the internet at this point).

The B&M Amazon stores strongly resemble the bookstores they put out of business, but they're fine. I suspect the fact that they double as pickup/dropoff points for Amazon packages brings in a lot of foot traffic.
