Here's the pictures of stubs of an abandoned freeway project in Seattle:

Wow this is the first time I've ever seen that. Where was the R. H. Thomson Expressway supposed to go?

It was supposed to go from Downtown Seattle to Wa-520 west of the bridge to reduce I-5 traffic...5th worse bottleneck in the nation

The LA 3132 and Interstate 220 stub ends may go somewhere eventually:

Been on LA 3139 several times (recently photographed it again in November). It is my understanding that the Earhart Expressway was built as a western extension of what would have been Interstate 310. If I'm incorrect, one of our Louisiana members surely knows the answer.

Furthermore they are finally adding an interchange between the Earhart and Causeway Boulevard, which may make the freeway more useful. There is work at the west end of the freeway too, but I was told that its likely a drainage project of some sort.

Stubs for the proposed SR-9B (aka I-795) southeast of Jacksonville: The freeway is still supposed to built and connected to a new St. Johns River crossing, but plans have been pushed back quite a bit:

Stubs and clearings for the Florida's Turnpike / Central Florida Greeneway interchange, which has been planned for, um, 20+ years and still doesn't appear to ever get built:

East end of GA166 in Atlanta that was supposed to continue on to I-20 further east (and become I-420):

Yes, Florida 9B is still a long way off. Florida 9A converting to Interstate 295 will happen next year at least.

I wrote FDOT about that Greeneway/Turnpike interchange in 2007, and they replied that there is no funding at this time and funding will not be available anytime soon.

I had no idea there were so many...

Would SC really have needed to connect the two spurs in Columbia? That city just doesn't seem big enough for it.

Well it was just the original freeway plan, not something that went with growth.

I don't see anything special there, what's up with it?

It was supposed to have been a part of I-40, which would have been built through Overton Park.

agentsteel53

is there any quick way to get out of street view and get the map back to full size, instead of half the window at most?

No, that's correct.  It would have connected to a proposed "Riverfront Expressway", which would have followed the east bank of the river between the Earhardt and then-proposed I-310 at the Westbank Expwy.

QuoteFurthermore they are finally adding an interchange between the Earhart and Causeway Boulevard, which may make the freeway more useful. There is work at the west end of the freeway too, but I was told that its likely a drainage project of some sort.

No road-related work at the west end at present.  There's occasional discussions from time to time about connecting Earhart to Airline (US 61) on both ends, but aside from an MIS study from about 5 years back (which also recommended an LRT line between the airport and downtown), nothing has happened.  LaDOTD appears to be concentrating on its ongoing upgrades to I-10 (of which the interchange at Causeway is next in line).

And the reason why I didnt understand it...I looked from my ipod touch which doesnt have street view. I get it now

The Earhart Expressway would have tied into the Riverfront Expressway on its east end, but was never slated to become part of I-310. That designation was only proposed for the segment of the Riverfront Expressway between its slated eastern terminus at I-10/Elysian Fields and its intersection with the Pontchartrain Expressway/GNO Bridge.

There has been some sort of work going on at the west end of Earhart. A tall, flat pile of soil has been created that looks suspiciously like a future elevated fill section for a highway. Realisitically, though, I hardly think any true roadwork is going on there. There is a drainage canal at that location so it could very well be drainage related work. There are also several buildings in the potential freeway right of way at the Dickory interchange that would have to be removed if any extension was constructed.

The formerly wooded land where the future Causeway/Earhart interchange is supposed to be constructed was cleared a couple years ago, but nothing has happened since.

The last work that I am aware to have occurred on Earhart was the addition of an entrance ramp from an industrial park to westbound Earhart just west of the parish line, using the old ghost ramp alignment that would have linked the proposed Riverfront expressway to Earhart.

This isnt unbuilt, rather than abandoned, but have any of you ever seen the 10 mile stretch of abandoned freeway in Pennsylvania?

IMHO, those tunnels should have been kept open for at least one direction of traffic.  Since the turnpike apparently has enough problems on Sideling Hill to warrant variable speed limits, I also have to wonder about the actual costs of bypassing those tunnels.  As much as it costs just to drive the turnpike anymore, I think they could afford to keep them open.

There's also an abandoned stretch of the Pennsy Turnpike around the old Laurel Hill tunnel.

However, that tunnel is currently in use by Chip Gannassi;s IRL (and NASCAR?) race teams!

See Ganassi's Area 51  @ http://www.thenascarinsiders.com/2009/01/08/ganassis-area-51/  :wow:

I think the reason the tunnels were bypassed in the first place was because it was less expensive to build up the mountains than to expand the tunnels (they were only 1 lane each direction when first build so the PA turnpike would have to build a second tunnel at each spot in order to use them).
