The date may be set incorrectly on my computer. I'm certain that I looked at the date and saw January 7. I was wondering why nobody had posted a new challenge yet for that day. I'll have to check that back at the office on Monday. Sorry about that.

No problem! I just wondered if you'd taken a trip to the Far East or something. No harm done. :)

I feel like we're about to wind up with a whole lot of overpasses today.

Would a simple mast arm pole count as a gantry?  I've got photos of those.
Avatar is the last interesting highway I clinched.

Yes. Too easy. (Perhaps I should have said something other than a bridge as well as a gantry, since there are plenty of those.)

January 8 challenge: 'BEGIN' route markers

The ones below are all legitimate beginnings of routes.  An interesting sub-challenge or future challenge might be begin signs that are erroneous or misleading.

Way back to July 29, 1999, when I first visited the beginning of I-90 East in Seattle.

I know we've seen these in other threads, but here's the beginning of US 20 East in Newport, Oregon.  July 19, 2004.

Then to Chicago for the beginning of I-55 South.  July 15, 2007.

Photos I post are my own unless otherwise noted.

Neat! I actually got a picture at that same spot December 19th, which now uses a green sign instead:

An unusual use of a BEGIN banner on the intersecting route, not the beginning route itself, near Midland, MI.

I'd actually been thinking of a Challenge for BEGIN and END markers posted on the same assembly, so we'll take that as a subset of this Challenge. :)

What does the "SYSTEM" sign mean?

"SYSTEM" means it was part of the Florida's Turnpike System:

Not all toll roads in Florida are part of the the Turnpike System; many toll bridges, Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX) routes, the Orchid Pond Parkway, and a few Orlando-area toll roads (among others) are not part of the Turnpike System. I think all non-System toll roads in Florida take SunPass, but a few bridges do not.

The route I posted above, the Sawgrass Expressway, was not part of that system until it became clear a few years after opening, that the bonds would take several decades get paid off. While it seemed like a bit of a boondoggle at the time, there's now lots of traffic, due to encroaching development and population growth along that route.

MNHighwayMan

Ah, good to know. The one and only time I've ever been to Florida was when I was eleven or twelve; I'm a month away from being 25 now. :)

Examples of misleading:

Where Virginia 207 ends and merges into a US 301 that had already been in existence for several hundred miles, in Bowling Green.  May 25, 2005.

And when I-80 merges into a very much already existing I-95 in northern NJ.  April 29, 2006.

And similarly, where I-280 ends and merges into I-80 West in NJ.  July 9, 2007.
