I found an old, very faded YIELD SIGN AHEAD sign off the Clearview Expressway in Queens recently:

When did YIELD/STOP SIGN AHEAD become regular YIELD/STOP AHEAD?
Not every speed limit in NY needs to be 30

I believe they were still text in the 1988 MUTCD, but symbol only by 2000. Symbols may have already been an option in '88.

Symbol signs were introduced with the 1971 MUTCD, but text signs were still an option until the 2000 MUTCD.  However, even prior to 1971, the text version was YIELD AHEAD, not YIELD SIGN AHEAD.

I did not pick up on the word SIGN in there. I'd have to look back at old NYS supplements to see if that was ever a standard, or this is a NYCism.

My guess is that it's a NYCism.  I've never seen "Yield/Stop Sign Ahead" on any NYSDOT install, which used text signs until the mid 00s (It wasn't until around 2006-07 when symbols became widely used).
