US 101 Sinkhole SW Oregon - "It's a Monster"
« on: January 29, 2016, 10:07:50 AM »

This sinkhole, which came after heavy rains in the area, is in the unincorporated community of Harbor (between California-Oregon state line and the city of Brookings in Curry County) at Milepost 358 along US 101. Motorists are detouring around the sinkhole using local streets.

The state closed down part of 101 in Harbor, Oregon, on Thursday night due to the sinkhole, which is the second sinkhole in as many months in the area. The first one opened on Dec. 13 in a restaurant parking lot next to the highway and, like Thursday's sinkhole, just kept growing. ...

The sinkholes formed after a series of heavy rains pounded the Oregon coast, causing a landslide north of Harbor and shutting down other highways due to debris flow.

Sinkholes and landslides frequently occur in the region because of the geology of the area.

According to the Curry Coastal Pilot, trouble began about noon along Shopping Center Avenue which runs parallel to U.S. 101. A landslide, about 50 feet from the sinkhole, started after a storm dropped about 1.5 inches of rain. Simultaneously, the sinkhole underneath a parking lot grew and ate up a portion of the highway.

The holes came within feet of the Fireside Dinner and Rice Bowl restaurants and ate portions of a parking lot. ...

Transportation officials told the newspaper they want to repair damage caused by the landslide first to reduce the detour time for motorists. Currently drivers will have been diverted through Lower Harbor Road near the Chetco River Bridge.

"It's massive. There's just no other way to describe it."

And yet, that's perhaps the most paradoxical way in which you could describe it. :-P
