I'm supposed to pick just one?

Approval (pick any number) works better than first past the post (pick just one) in almost all cases when there are 3 or more options, and this thread is one of the more egregious examples.

("Rate each option 0-10" works even better, but that's not supported by forum software.)

I would change it, but I can't.

I tend to stick to stuff from the 1980s regardless of genre.

I like most kinds of music, but chose pop. My favorite kinds of music are 80s, old-school hip-hop and 90s rock.

I would change it, but I can't.

Can you just delete the poll? This is not one of the rare topics where a poll works, or is useful. Accordingly, I'm going to ignore the poll.

Especially since my favorite, progressive rock (Emerson Lake & Palmer, Yes, Pink Floyd, etc.), isn't on the menu.

I also have a weird fondness for Lawrence Welk. I'm not sure where his hokey brand of "champagne music" (kind of in the "big band" genre) fits into the existing categories. All the more reason not to have a poll that doesn't (and really can't) cover all the options.

Blues (which is not the same as R&B), 70s & 80 rock, hairbands, some country from the 90s, just to name a few.

None of my options are available.  No jam bands (Grateful Dead, Phish), progressive rock (Yes, Pink Floyd, Rush), or classic rock (Rolling Stones, Hendrix, Beatles, Zeppelin, Skynyrd, CSN and Y [including Y solo]), for a choice?
Interstates I've clinched: 97, 290 (MA), 291 (CT), 291 (MA), 293, 295 (DE-NJ-PA), 295 (RI-MA), 384, 391, 395 (CT-MA), 395 (MD), 495 (DE), 610 (LA), 684, 691, 695 (MD), 695 (NY), 795 (MD)

tchafe1978

Basically any kind of rock, as long as it includes heavy emphasis on guitar, not necessarily heavy guitar though. But I can listen to stuff from the 70s up to current stuff. Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Rush, Ozzy, Iron Maiden, Dio, Some Skynyrd, Deep Purple, Guns n Roses, Metallica, Megadeth, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Audioslave, Nirvana, Godsmack, Tool, A Perfect Circle, Stone Sour, Seether, Shinedown, Five Finger Death Punch. Those are just off the top of my head, too many others to list. But there is so much variety in rock and hard rock music, other genres just seem to get stale and old and repetitive to me.

Not to over use a word I have ecclectic taste in music... I like everything from bluegrass/Americana to 1980s punk to Broadway Show tunes to classical to opera to Bassa Nova to bachata to hip hop and rap

Mainly electronic (using the word "techno"  as a blanket term for all electronic music is incorrect), rock, and some alternative pop (if that's what artists like Lana Del Rey and Melanie Martinez would be considered). Other genres I might find an occasional song I like; for example, I have one Bruno Mars song (Locked Out Of Heaven) because it has a very Police-like sound to it that I enjoyed when I heard it. Favorite singer is Lana Del Rey, favorite male singer is the late Ian Curtis.

Rap/hip hop

When it comes to Rap/Hip Hop I stick to the old stuff, you know before NWA, when they talked about having fun/social issues. Rap today is just noise. As for my favorite at the moment: Grunge/Post-Grunge. I have an eclectic taste as well.

Currently listening to a song that reminds me of when my grandmother passed away back in 2007: Wishlist by Pearl Jam.

Alps

Alternative is not necessarily pop. It ranges all the way from pop to folk to rock.

MNHighwayMan

My favorite is the one played at 3 AM in the supermarket restroom while the hydrocodone wears off.

SectorZ

No heavy metal, but 'alternative pop' is an option.

I don't think the OP knows that though; lest he know's about RYM.

I'd say I have an eclectic taste in music for the most part.

I voted Country in the poll to give it some representation (and, of course, it is one of my favorite genres of music). My top favorite genres of music might be, in no particular order, Country, Folk, Rock, older Pop (Traditional Pop, 80's Pop, Sunshine Pop, etc.), and anything psychedelic (examples: Psychedelic Rock (ex. The Byrds), Acid Rock (ex. The Doors), Psychedelic Pop (ex. The Beach Boys), Psychedelic Folk (ex. Love), Psychedelic Soul (ex. The 5th Dimension), Disco (ex. The Bee Gees, KC & The Sunshine Band, etc.), etc.).

Most of my musical taste lies in the past, with not too much being in the modern age. Most of the modern stuff I enjoy is by already-established rock, country, and folk artists who are still putting out albums (examples: U2, James Taylor, George Strait, Alan Jackson, etc.), and neo-Psychedelia. Any modern pop songs that I like are very, very, very few and far between (sporadic), such as "What Does The Fox Say" by Ylvis, and "Happy" by Pharrell Williams.

Bow to the righteousness that is Jane's Addiction!

Pop and country for me. I like listening to Taylor Swift, Tove Lo and Shania Twain.

I think a single-point poll works for this topic, because the question is about your favorite genre, not a list of all of the ones you like.  I like just about every genre of American music since 1900 except for country.  I have a fondness for 1970s porno music.  Some disco music incorporates that sound, with which it combines well.  To choose a favorite, I'd have to say 1970s-era rock, although disco (even non-porno disco) ranks pretty high, too, and quite a lot ranks not far behind.
I'd like to buy a vowel, Alex.  What is E?

The single-choice-only poll annoys me as well, because I tend to have somewhat eclectic taste in music, though I mostly live in the space between techno (whatever that means), punk, and rock these days. If pressed, I'd say my favorite band/artist is The The, but that seems to change on an almost daily basis.

index

I like pretty much everything, although most of the time I listen to rock, particularly metal, (thrash and some black metal) southern rock, classic rock, and 1980s rock. I listen to chiptune, some, but not very much pop. I occasionally listen to ambient and electronic.

What I listen to the most in terms of who makes it would be R.E.M., Diesel, (the one that made Sausalito Summernight) Molly Hatchet, Gordon Lightfoot, The Outlaws, Sleep, Exodus. There are a lot of other artists, singers, and such that I listen to, but only a few of their songs. There's a lot, so I won't bother listing.
I love my 2010 Ford Explorer.

I'll listen to pretty much anything, as long as it's not country, hip hop or anything made after 2000. I love 70s, 80s and 90s pop and rock, as well as (smooth) jazz.
