Here is the ODOT page for a planed project to modernize the oldest section of the US 30 freeway through Mansfield, OH. This would be from SR 309 to Fifth Avenue, and involve replacing old pavement & bridges, widening shoulders, adding lighting, and modifying the interchanges at SR 39, SR 13, SR 545 & Fifth Avenue, with a projected construction start date of 2016. There are several interchange alternatives, and it will be interesting to see which ones they go with, especially for the 13/545/5th Ave area.

I've always liked driving this part of 30 and those interchanges, as it's a neat look back at how freeways were designed in the 50's, and I believe this is the oldest section of freeway in north central Ohio. So it'll be sad to see it go, but I can see why it needs done.

I was surprised to see the "weave" between the Trimble onramp and 309 offramp westbound mentioned as a problem.  Driving through there semi-frequently, I have never noticed a problem...the weaving is worse eastbound where there isn't a lane to handle it.

It will be nice to finally have the rest of the surrounding road match the newer viaduct in width and quality.  It always seemed out of place sandwiched between the much older sections.

Another public meeting coming up, on 9/22:

http://www.dot.state.oh.us/districts/D03/DDD/newsreleases/Pages/16-0902-RIC-US-30-Public-Meeting0902-7515.aspx

and according to the current project page.....
QuoteThe work has been split in to two separate projects, including:

-WEST Project -  From State Route 309 to State Route 13, $60 million, construction April 2019 to September 2020.
-EAST Project - From State Route 13 to Fifth Avenue, $58 million, construction April 2020 to September

This is well to the east of the thread's subject, but are there any plans to ever extend the US 30 freeway in Canton, OH east of its long-time terminus of Trump Ave. S.E.?

Let's just go ahead and make US-30 a coast-to-coast interstate and be done with it already.

Don’t ask me how I know.  Just understand that I do.

Not really. There is a study on that corridor on ODOT's site somewhere that I can't find right now. One of the alternatives is to build a new freeway to OH 11 north of Lisbon, but the general consensus is to do spot corrections on the route between Canton and Lisbon to resolve safety and sight distance issues. I remember seeing some curves being flattened in the proposal as well. It generally has a low VPD but a higher crash rate than state average.

ODOT does have a project to extend the US 30 freeway east to SR 44 by East Canton lurking in TRAC Tier II but it is unfunded through 2025.

East of SR 44, the plan is spot upgrades as Sherman said. There is a report of suggested improvements at http://www.dot.state.oh.us/districts/D11/Documents/US30Docs/2015-11-11%20STA-COL30ReportFINAL.pdf.

I just recently drove US 30 from Canton to Lisbon.  I don't think that it needs a full highway to Oh 11 yet.  While it's a somewhat busy 2 lane highway, and the highway just ending at Trump Ave looks a bit dopey, there is still not that much traffic on that road.  I think spot improvements would work just fine.

The Ghostbuster

What about building a 2-lane limited-access roadway off the end of the Trump Ave. stub? Are traffic counts too low for even that to occur?

The plan is to eventually extend the freeway to SR 44. It's on ODOT's priority list but has no funding.

According to the project main page this is supposed to begin construction in April of this year:
http://www.dot.state.oh.us/districts/D03/Pages/RIC-30-Major-Rehabilitation.aspx

...and it looks like it does appear on the District 3 STIP list (or at least parts of it, I find it hard to decipher that document sometimes)

Probably means that the days are numbered for the numerous button copy signs on that section. :(

Upon further review, I now see that parts of this project have been scaled back.

It was originally planned to eliminate all of the existing OH 13 and OH 545 ramps and replace them with a diamond interchange between them with a system of new connector roads.

Now they are leaving the ramps for the westbound side of both interchanges in place and only building new ramps for combined access to/from 13 and 545 on the the eastbound side:
http://www.dot.state.oh.us/districts/D03/Documents/RIC-30%20Project/PublicMeeting/2018_08-01/Exhibit%20-%2007%20-%20Modified%20East%20Project%20-%20Ramps.pdf

I also recall seeing improvements to OH 39 interchange at some point, but I don't see that mentioned anywhere in any of the current documents on the project page.

A new lane between the eastbound 309 on ramp and the Trimble Rd off ramp is included in this project, so now both directions will have an extra lane between those interchanges. There is currently a similar 3rd lane between the existing OH 13 and OH 545 interchanges in both directions. Westbound will remain the same, eastbound will have a 3rd lane between the new combined 13/545 on ramp and the existing 5th street off ramp.

Oh, and the 5th avenue and Trimble Rd bridges will get decorative "MANSFIELD" signage:

Seems like they left them in place longer because they knew this project was coming.  West and east of there the button copy were replaced years back under the Clearview regime while the ones in the project area were left.

Not to mention the I-71/US 30/Koogle Rd interchange just to the east that is completely substandard ..... Here is my idea for a potential fix:

Here's what the page for this project now looks like under the new ODOT website format:
https://www.transportation.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/odot/projects/projects/93455

What I find a bit confusing is that there is no mention at all of the OH 39 interchange on the text list of items that are being done for this overall project. However, on the illustration that interchange is shown as getting a new half folded diamond configuration with 4 new ramps replacing the existing 6 ramp parclo geometry as well as a new traffic light on OH 39 at the westbound ramps intersection. It also shows that the access to Longview Ave from the westbound ramps will be removed with Longview getting cul-de-saced.

Losing the 30WB to 39NB ramp in favor of the loop and then sitting at a signal seems odd, unless they want less to maintain or something.  The most meaningful changes at 39 are to and from eastbound 30, but it seems like if the added traffic requires a signal and they are removing the free-flowing ramp from WB to NB, there must be some reason.  Are they narrowing down 39 a lot?

It's probably a cost savings issue. I don't think that ramp gets a ton of traffic. It has a short merge with 39 and I think maybe sight distance issues, and it looks from GMSV like the ramp doesn't have much of a shoulder. ODOT probably figured it wasn't worth the money to upgrade it.

In some other US 30 news, ODOT is planning to place RCUT's at the following intersections on US 30 between Mansfield and Canton:

OH 603 near Mifflin:
https://www.transportation.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/odot/projects/projects/102108

OH 89 near Jermomesville:
https://www.transportation.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/odot/projects/projects/110853

Wegner Rd in Dalton:
https://www.transportation.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/odot/projects/projects/102109

There's also one coming to western part of US 30 in Ohio. Thayer Rd near Beaverdam will get an RCUT and access will be eliminated to the two roads on either side of it. These are the first 3 roads west of where US 30 crosses I-75. This one has a project page that includes a 16 minute youtube video about the project and RCUT's in general.

ODOT seems to be jumping on the RCUT bandwagon. SR 21 in Wayne County is also getting some. I'm not sure why ODOT seems to favor the style of entirely closing the medians versus allowing left turning traffic off the main road to be done at the intersection.

With the US 30 projects, SR 603 is a skewed intersection and Wenger Road has sight distance issues. Sight distance isn't a problem with SR 89 intersection - I think the issue there is more of people running the stop sign on SR 89.
