In Michigan, I believe the M-553 designation was removed after only a few years :-(, giving the high number distinction to M-294.  Before that, M-247 held the honor for several decades. :coffee:

M-554 was removed in 2005, but M-553 remains. Anyway, the highest numbered highway in Michigan is I 696.

Oops!  Thank you for the correction regarding M-553 and M-554.  Also, the highest U.S. highway number in Michigan is US-141. :coffee:

Highest FM road in Texas is (AFAIK) FM 3549, while highest RM road is RM 3474.

In Kansas I think the maxima are as follows:  I-635, K-383, and US 400.  K-383 is former US 383, so the "natural" maximum for Kansas state routes is probably one of the state-maintained spurs with a K-2XX designation in the mid-200's.  US 400 is essentially a fake two-digit route, so the "natural" maximum for US routes passing through Kansas is likely US 283.

Assuming you were limiting Michigan to the non-Interstates, and M-553 was renumbered, what about M-311 (now signed) and M-331 (still unsigned)?

Yes, I was.  Also, because I forgot about US-223, and since Michigan's Upper Peninsula is, in some ways, unique to the rest of the state,  here are the highest numbers for the 3 different types of highways in the U.P.:

1.  M-553
2.  US-141
3.  I-75
