Right now, Tennessee is at around 70.

I-55: 12.28
I-26: approx 57
Total: 69.28 (give or take a mile or two)

I'm out of this F***KING PLACE!

If TDOT surprises us and opts to tie-in I-22 to I-240 (recommendation to be released in October), then they would have 18.75 to 19 miles.  I-55 (12.28) + I-22 (approx. 6.5).  But, they could then "blow it" by multiplexing I-22 to (ironically enough) I-55 for a tidy 2di to 2di connection.

Glancing at a map of Memphis circa 2000, it looks like, at the time, part of U.S.78/ Lamar Avenue Corridor closest to Mississippi state line was in area "reserved for Memphis annexation" and that the rest of the corridor was already within the Memphis city limits.  Assume for sake of argument that "reserved" part of city limits is part of city limits (I'd be interested to know if Memphis has already annexed that area).  If TDOT opts for I-22/ I-240 "tie-in", then Memphis would have two 2di Interstates (I-55 and I-22) whose entire distance within Tennessee would be within the Memphis city limits.

Are there any cities in the country that currently have at least two 2di Interstates whose entire distance within that city's state are within that city's city limits?

The Hawaii interstates are all in the City and County of Honolulu (on the island of Oahu)! :-D

But all except maybe H-201 stray outside Honolulu's "urban area boundary," which is what the state and the Census Bureau use to differentiate between Honolulu and all the other communities within Honolulu County.  Hawaii has no municipal governments below the county level, and so doesn't have conventional "city limits" (or signs marking the city/urban area boundaries).

"Now with no-intersection required, then DC winds hands-down with I-66 (~1.2mi) + I-95 (~0.1mi) = 1.3mi
Excluding DC, I'd hazard a bet that the Georgia example cited is the winner."

Looking for info re Puerto Rico's interstates, I stumbled across FHWA's interstate mileage log yesterday:

http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/reports/routefinder/table3.cfm

So, simply for the historical record:

Exact length for D.C.: I-66 (1.48) + I-95 (0.11) = 1.59 mi
Revised length for Georgia: I-59 (20.67) + I-24 (4.10) = 24.77 mi

you have I-95 (~23.5mi) + I-78 (0.5mi) = 24mi.

Tie between NY and Mizzou confirmed: I-95 in NY is listed as 23.50 miles.
I wonder if either state's DOT will throw the red challenge bag and demand a "survey under review"?  :D

List is as of Oct. 2002; no total for TN I-26.

"Do the 2dis have to intersect in the state?  If so, GA beats even HI (leaving aside whether the single-digit H- routes should be counted as 2dis).  If not, H-2 and H-3 sum to about 23.6 miles."

Upon further FHWA review...

H-2 (8.33) + H-3 (15.32) = 23.65 mi.

So, HI beats the NY-MO tie by a whopping 0.35 mi.

In "longest" shortest sum category (using the 2002 FHWA table):

Gold: South Dakota with I-90 (412.76) + I-29 (252.50) = 665.26 mi
Silver: Kansas with I-70 (424.15) + I-35 (233.51) = 659.66 mi
Bronze: Montana with I-15 (396.03) + I-94 (249.15) = 645.18 mi

Who says the Bowl System is better than a playoff? [sorry, first full Saturday of college football]  :hyper:

Even though Georgia could not earn gold, silver, or bronze, home-state pride compels me to (to borrow a phrase) commend their performance as "most exceptional".  A mere 1.13 mi. from winning the gold outright ...

HOWEVER, the Peach State does bring home the gold in the "intersection required" category.
