Title: Alps' Roads UPDATE!
Post by: Alps on August 29, 2009, 04:10:35 PM
For the first time since the forum restarted, I finally have an update to announce!  The PA State College meet in April now has a page, along with various sights from the meet on various pages, and there's a lot of NJ work too including Bergen County.  If you like old route shields, you'll love Bergen and its many new CR pages.  So head on over to http://www.alpsroads.net/roads (http://www.alpsroads.net/roads)!

Thanks for the update but all the links on the updated section from "Garden State Parkway" and down link to the US 404 page.

It took six months for one update and now 6 days for the next one.  The second half of the update is all things Florida.  Check out button copy and bridges on I-275 and I-95, or feast on 193 photos (and a video) from US 1 starting in Miami and continuing down to Key West.  Enjoy more Bahia Honda Bridge and Seven Mile Bridge than you thought possible!  http://www.alpsroads.net/roads (http://www.alpsroads.net/roads) has the new Florida update listed with handy links.

Hey alps, do you need Maine photos? You seem to lack Maine on your site.

On this page http://www.alpsroads.net/roads/fl/i-95/s.html (http://www.alpsroads.net/roads/fl/i-95/s.html)

"FL 817 NB and SB at FL 848, which also goes west to FL 823, but who really cares about that road? There appears to have at one point been another sign on each assembly, so that could have been a WEST 848. I believe these are courtesy Costa Ioannidis - please correct or confirm."

Yes, that's correct.

New updates!  My Memorial Day trip is up along with all the photos from New England - especially Maine - and a good number from Maryland.  http://www.alpsroads.net/roads (http://www.alpsroads.net/roads) has the gooey details.

What roads do you add coverage for in Maryland? I am looking at your MD-272 page and don't think that you had it before. I love the Turkey Point area at the south end of MD-272. Have hiked there many times!

The front page tells all re: the updates.  Yes, MD 272 (Elk Neck) page is one of the new ones.  I went up and down the coastline of the northern Chesapeake.

Since you did some hiking around Elk Neck, next time you are in northeastern MD take MD-24 to Rocks State Park. Definitely worth a visit!

Funny that a good chunk of your I-95 CT signs are now history.... everything from NY to Exit 30 has been replaced, and they're working right now on Exits 35-42 and 47-50.

As of this moment, Alps' Roads has well over 1,000 more photos from the great state of New York.  Coverage includes the entirety of Long Island (including Shelter Island), the Highland Road Meet on October 3 (aka Poughkeepsie, aka Newburgh), and some pre-Highland festivities that not everyone at the meet got to see (Wallkill Valley Railroad Bridge, Perrine's Bridge on NY 213).  So you owe it to the gringoes to bip on over and check out the latest, greatest, NY photos.  As always, the full update digest is on http://www.alpsroads.net/roads, and comments/corrections/submittals/etc. are always welcome.

P.S.  Why only 75% complete?  Well over 400 photos of the Long Island Motor Parkway will be coming your way shortly!  Stay tuned.

The update has been completed.  Come over to the Long Island Motor Parkway at http://www.alpsroads.net/roads/ny/limp (http://www.alpsroads.net/roads/ny/limp) and see nearly 450 photos of just about as many sections of the old Parkway as can possibly be traversed along with a detailed history and directions on how to access all of the same sections I found.  As always, especially with a significant project like this, comments and corrections will be welcomed.  I am especially looking for input from/relating to the other major Parkway websites as linked on the front LIMP page.

Since I will be leaving for even more Old Northwest photos tomorrow, I thought it would be good to get some of them into an UPDATE!  At http://www.alpsroads.net/roads you will find highlights including a new Puerto Rico page, Michael Summa's sign collection (it's dandy), the original brick National Road in Illinois, the 2009 Indianapolis Road Meet, bridges of Cincinnati, hundreds of new Michigan photos including the Historic Bridge Park, abandoned Troy Meadow Rd. in NJ, and a whole bunch of button copy in Indiana and New Jersey.  I expect to see you at http://www.alpsroads.net/roads.  May the New Year bring you more happy travels and less Clearview!

wow, Mike S has a West Virginia turnpike coffin shield?  excellent!

I'll be seeing him around Jan 25th ... definitely looking forward to that visit. He's been an incredible help with the shield gallery as he has been taking photos and collecting signs since 1969.  The only person I know who regularly took photos longer ago than that is Jim Lindsay (1953 to today, and still going strong - the shield gallery has photos from him from the 50s, and photos from him from last month).

I've just added 1,500 photos (out of 2,900 total) to my Ohio empire.  Feast on the treats of the Waldvogel Viaduct, abandoned Maryland Ave. and Torrence Rd. in Cincinnati, and plenty of other Interstate, US, and state highway goodies around the state!  As always, comments/corrections/questions and, of course, submittals are welcome!  The details are in the link:

I'll try to keep my following comments specific to each page of yours, but general to the regions.
Cleveland
I-490 started out as (proposed) I-80 N then I-290 (which was to have gone out along Shaker Blvd (Oh 87) to I-271) before its current status.  I don't know of any freeway extensions east of I-271 into Geauga County other than US 422 (and US 322 4 laning that ends at the county line)
Dennison Expwy (I-71/I-90/Shoreway West connectors) was to have continued south as mainline I-71 through Parma and North Royalton as late as 1957.  By 1960, I-71 south's routing had changed to the present routing.
I-480 N (the connector between I-480 and US 422) was originally intended to be US 422 all the way to the Oh 14 exit (according to Marc Fannin). Thus the extra space on the BGS for exit 26B (Rockside Rd) from I-271 NB.
Youngstown
I don't understand what you're saying about US 422 with the bypasses of Warren & DT Youngstown with surface routes.
Columbus
What is now I-670 (from I-70 west to I-71) was originally to be I-70.  By the mid 60s ODOT/Columbus had already decided that bringing I-70 west traffic into the Spring-Sandusky interchange was a bad idea, thus the present routing of I-70 from I-670 to I-71/315 (and a reconstruction of the then Mound-Sandusky interchange into what it is today)
Thus the (old) funky signage for I-670 @ Grandview Ave. for many years (prior to I-670 being completed).  I-70 was completed to Grandview Ave. in the late 60s and left like that till the "reroute" was completed in the mid 70s.
Also, I-71 was NEVER routed on Oh 315, between the innerbelt and I-270.  In fact, the 315 interstate wasn't completed till 1982 (I-71, in comparison was completed through Columbus by 1966).
I-670 east (I-71 to I-270) was conceived and built to connect DT C-bus and Port Columbus.
The actual purpose of the US 62 freeway (from west of the Airport on into Gahanna), prior to I-670 is unknown to me.  But all those photos were taken after I-670 was extended east in the mid 90s. Thus all those signs have yet to be replaced.
I-270 west used to have Indianapolis as the control city before the "Dayton tape job"
Also that "exit only" tab on 315 (on your I-270 index page) wasn't a "tape job" just shoddy work.
The reason for the exit spacing on I-270 between I-670 and Oh 161 (Easton area) was done on purpose.  The developers (Leslie Wexner of The Limited clothing fame) wanted to (esentially) have exclusive access from the Easton exit to New Albany. They paid ODOT handsomely (both above and below table) for this to happen.  It was a favorite subject between me and one of my Geography professors @ Ohio State.
Signage around I-270 and I-71 north has changed (again) due to construction in the last year or two.
All BGS signage at Polaris now includes the 750 shield within the signs, not as an extra appendage.
Oh your US 33 page, you have a I-270 south Wheeling sign photo.  I believe that sign is along Oh 161 east.  Notice the blue directional sign beneith the BGS.  It has 161 on it, not 33.
Central Ohio
Oh 13 was to be a 4 lane expressway from Mansfield to Newark (according to state plans from 1961 & 1972). Only parts built were from the Mansfield city limits to near Belleville and the bypass to the west of Fredricktown. Though, a map of Mt. Vernon, from the 1980s show a proposed Oh 13 bypass to the west of Mt. Vernon.

(You can go ahead and kick this to the Great Lakes forum sub-section)

Though this may be too esoteric, I will try to address the points in order.  No one else may be interested...

I had found information about considering such an extension.  I'm not distinguishing between ideas vs. realistic/drawn plans when I write, so it may never have made it onto paper.

QuoteDennison Expwy (I-71/I-90/Shoreway West connectors) was to have continued south as mainline I-71 through Parma and North Royalton as late as 1957.  By 1960, I-71 south's routing had changed to the present routing.
Not sure that changes what I have written on any of my pages... I'm not telling a full history of routes, I'm only telling history as it is relevant to what I'm showing.

QuoteI-480 N (the connector between I-480 and US 422) was originally intended to be US 422 all the way to the Oh 14 exit (according to Marc Fannin). Thus the extra space on the BGS for exit 26B (Rockside Rd) from I-271 NB.
I'll make a note of that on the I-271 page - thanks!

QuoteI don't understand what you're saying about US 422 with the bypasses of Warren & DT Youngstown with surface routes.
I think I was referring obliquely to OH 82 and PA 60 (now I-376 anyway).  I'll fix it.

QuoteWhat is now I-670 (from I-70 west to I-71) was originally to be I-70.

Thanks for that info - I'll update the pages with it.

QuoteAlso, I-71 was NEVER routed on Oh 315, between the innerbelt and I-270.  In fact, the 315 interstate wasn't completed till 1982 (I-71, in comparison was completed through Columbus by 1966).
I-71 did use 315 as far as I-670.  I had heard elsewhere that it was studied to continue straight north from there as well.  I'll clarify.

QuoteI-670 east (I-71 to I-270) was conceived and built to connect DT C-bus and Port Columbus.
The actual purpose of the US 62 freeway (from west of the Airport on into Gahanna), prior to I-670 is unknown to me.  But all those photos were taken after I-670 was extended east in the mid 90s. Thus all those signs have yet to be replaced.
It seemed like the signs were taken before the airport interchange was reconstructed.  But John K. did make multiple passes through there, apparently.  I'll update accordingly - also will recaption the last photo now that I see where it is.

QuoteI-270 west used to have Indianapolis as the control city before the "Dayton tape job"
Got it, thanks.

QuoteAlso that "exit only" tab on 315 (on your I-270 index page) wasn't a "tape job" just shoddy work.
Is that your observation, theory, or is that confirmed?

QuoteThe reason for the exit spacing on I-270 between I-670 and Oh 161 (Easton area) was done on purpose.
I'll word it tactfully.

QuoteSignage around I-270 and I-71 north has changed (again) due to construction in the last year or two.
All BGS signage at Polaris now includes the 750 shield within the signs, not as an extra appendage.
Not changing the caption, but thanks for the info.

QuoteOh your US 33 page, you have a I-270 south Wheeling sign photo.  I believe that sign is along Oh 161 east.  Notice the blue directional sign beneith the BGS.  It has 161 on it, not 33.
OH 161 intersects both sides of I-270, as a freeway, and one of them has US 33.  I just chose the wrong side.

QuoteOh 13 was to be a 4 lane expressway from Mansfield to Newark (according to state plans from 1961 & 1972). Only parts built were from the Mansfield city limits to near Belleville and the bypass to the west of Fredricktown. Though, a map of Mt. Thanks for the info - not adding to the caption at this time but will keep it in mind if I add more to the page.

A tremendous amount of time later, many false starts and interesting twists and turns in my life, I finally squeezed out the last of my Virginia roads and I present to you an UPDATE!  There are two new meets posted (DC from November and Detroit from January) and a lot of material from Virginia and Pennsylvania.  The highlights include three new videos, 123 new Virginia US 11 photos, plenty of new construction and post-construction photos from the Springfield Interchange/Wilson Bridge (thanks to the DC meet), and the 2009 New River Gorge Bridge Day on US 19 in West Virginia.  As usual, all of the juicy bits are listed on www.alpsroads.net/roads, and comments/contributions/corrections are always welcome and appreciated.

There's no button copy anymore on I-395 proper...DDOT replaced all the overhead signage along I-395 a couple years ago.  Some of the approach roads, as well as ramps to/along the Southeast Freeway still have button copy, though.

Thats a shame. I was really hoping to shoot the ones on I-395. But ah well, the ones on the ramps can be a consolation prize. You included it in your update Steve, but just to be safe, is the I-95/I-295 BGS under the L'Enfant Promenade still there or no?

I thought the exit tabs were just an addition and DDOT was going to leave those along. Ah well, I was hoping to get some shots of those. So do you know if the I-95/I-295 BGS under L'Enfant Promenade is still there? I know its on Steve's site and included it in the update, but I wanted to be safe since his photos are from November. I also want to get some shots of some of the other district named I-95 and I-395 shields scattered throughout the district as well as some old traffic signals including those old neon NO LEFT TURN signs (there are 2 of them just outside the Holocaust Museum, as well as a district name I-395 green sign right near it).

I believe that District of Columbia is still there as of early July. The non-cutouts are definitely still in place.

This nearby sign (https://www.aaroads.com/mid-atlantic/district_of_columbia/us-001_nb_at_madison_dr_nw.jpg) was corrected, though its replacement (http://www.alpsroads.net/roads/dc/us_1/nmadison.jpg) uses non-standard fonts.

Lets hope it stays there, along with the old signals at an intersection right next to it. I don't see why it'll be replaced, except for the fact that the photo Steve has shows it peeling.

Alright, thanks! And thanks also for telling me about the I-395 button copy replacement, since it would have been more of a bummer to discover on my own that they have been replaced.

bloxor.  Since when is Alps Roads a "streaming media" site, according to my company's firewall.  WTF, it wasn't blocked as recently as a week ago.

Let me guess... WebSense(less)? It blocks aaroads as a travel site too. Heck it was blocking my own domains as "unknown" even though I have nothing more then a parking page up.

that's the one, except it blocks Alps as "streaming media".  I've never seen anything blocked as "travel" so I don't think our company uses that as a filter.  AARoads comes through fine, as do other travel sites like Orbitz.

It would block that page as streaming media because I have a Youtube video embedded in it.

damn.  it managed to find the one YouTube video embedded on your site, and hosed the entire set of hundreds of pages?  Websense, what a bunch of morons.

that explains why the site got borked just a few days ago - they just blocked YouTube and other streaming media explicitly.

Interesting - I went in to the site @ work and it loaded - it's how your company sets up their blocker.  to block the object or the site - in your case it was the latter.

Old bridges in AL (US 31, Legg Bridge) and OK (OK 18, OK 66, Blackburn) including history on AL US 80 in Selma
3 videos in Alabama

Regarding your I-22 comment on your root Mississippi page, a bit of history is in order here:  the plan for a US 78 freeway between Memphis and Birmingham goes back over 4 decades...with Mississippi completing their part in 1994.  The idea to designate it as I-22 came much later...only about 10 years ago.  So the claim that "MS and AL have made big mistakes by designating the new highway as US 78" doesn't really apply here.

In less than three weeks I've exhorted another 1,500+ photos to join the Internet for your viewing pleasure.  Huge amounts of new content for Louisiana, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland, some areas of which have been historically lacking in road coverage online.  A collection of Polish signs for your pleasure.  2 videos, cats-eye signs, and more bridges and scenery than you can shake a Truth Stick (TM) at.  As always, the updates are posted at http://www.alpsroads.net/roads/ and check out the new, improved, 35% more cuddly background color.  Comments, suggestions, corrections, submittals, etc. are always appreciated.

Even though it's not roads, comments, corrections, etc. are still welcomed.  I discovered a lot of broken links - if you see something, say something! (TM Port Authority Police)

But the star of the show is NJ, with new I-78 and Garden State Parkway construction photos, Turnpike widening photos, a lot more of the Beesley's Point Bridge on US 9, US 46/NJ 15 construction, NJ 52 Causeway Bridge construction, historical NJ 169, and several hundred other photos (nearly 1,000 in all!). Regarding "D" in the federal route marker for cuotas:  the full official label for a toll highway in Mexico is carretera directa de cuota--literally "direct highway with a toll"--so the "D" is for directa.  Also, kilometerposting behavior varies somewhat in Mexico, but generally kilometerposts count down to a state capital or other large city, and up to the state line.

http://dgst.sct.gob.mx/index.php?id=659 is a decent set of maps and route logs of federal and state highways in each Mexican state (if you can get them to load; they seem a little slow right now). I don't think there are defined routings through cities; treat signs as if they had invisible 'TO's.

Welcome to another update! Brought to you by the letters M and D, and the letters O and H. Those are the features this month (just in time for the Watertown meet, too), and here are some things to watch for:

Akron and Baltimore meet pages are finally up, just a year and a half late...

In Ohio, check out OH 172, the former Lincoln Highway. You'll like what you see.

In Maryland, there is a LOT of interesting stuff:
* Alt. US 40 and Casselman River Bridge, US 40 and Wilson Bridge, and the other National Road photos west of Baltimore
* MD 144 and Monocacy River bridges, and even more from the National Road
* US 50 and Choptank River Bridge, and other new photos east of DC
* ICC construction (I-95, MD 200, MD 97 pages)
* I-95 around Baltimore, I-70 and I-83 stubs with button copy and MD 149 stubs (Moravia Road)
* Old MD 194 near Pennsylvania

The complete list is at www.alpsroads.net/roads. As always, comments, corrections, suggestions, contributions, etc. are welcome!

New York:

I-278 - Lots of Verrazano Bridge photos and a trip under the Gowanus Expwy.
NY 39 - Three old stone bridges
NY 211 - One very memorable sign error
Syracuse - Tipperary Hill with the famous upside-down traffic light

Connecticut: Hundreds of updated and new freeway button copy photos
CT 72 - New expressway construction photos in Bristol

There's plenty more, including a total of 6 new videos, so click on over to http://www.alpsroads.net/roads and feast on an update more fattening than a Christmas goose! As always, comments, corrections, information, etc. are welcome.

Concerning "OLD US 380"-
Texas 24 (west of Greenville) became US 380 in 1971. Therefore, if this bridge was bypassed before 1971, it would be "Old Texas 24". I have no idea when this bridge was bypassed. Did you happen to observe the design caracteristics of the new bridge, in order to determine its appx age?

Also, glad you got the bridge remains at Norman, OK. It saw those on Google Maps and thaought that was interesting.
Overall, good update wit lots of interesting stuff, keep up the good work.

Are there any pics of OLD 80 from the Boulevard/Jacumba area that you would like since I lve there?  BTW, final regulatory approval nears for Jacumba to be renamed to Jacumba Hot Springs, in fact i just thought of a great old "Junction 94" sign near my farm

I don't have a whole lot of old 80 covered, so I'd accept the offer. But I don't know what I'd be looking for in Jacumba.

Okay, I've sorted everything I've done so far, and I have 13 more roads updates to go. So, what do people want to see? (Same poll is on my FB page (http://www.facebook.com/alpsroads.net).)

(You can pick one or more numbers, or rank them. Please use the numbers - I'm not moving states around within these groups.)

1 Quebec, Ontario
2 Maine, NH, Vermont
3 Massachusetts, RI, Delaware, part of NJ
4 Most of NJ
5 Connecticut, part of NY
6 Most of NY
7 Maryland and part of Pennsylvania
8 Virginia and part of Pennsylvania
9 Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky
10 Ohio, WV
11 Illinois
12 Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma
13 Florida, Georgia, SC, NC, Tennessee, DC

I'd like to see 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 13.

After taking that whole roads poll, I still had a bunch of non-roads photos to finish up, and now you can see the results (http://www.alpsroads.net/www). Most of the photos are from California, and most of the rest are from way up high in the air. (If you can identify any mountains or canyons I flew over, I'd be happy to edit my pages accordingly.) Enjoy! Because after this, it's 13 straight roads updates.

Just in time to ring out the old year, I've fulfilled the first request (based on total votes) for Quebec and Ontario. I have about 1,500 photos and exactly 5 videos (all in Quebec). This includes:
* Montreal (5/28/11) and Ottawa (8/25/12) meets
* So much freeway construction: ON Highway 417, QC A-5, A-30, A-35, A-50, QC 175
* Bridges covered and uncovered - Alexandra, Pakenham, Burlington Bay Skyway, Burlington Bay Lift Bridge in Ontario; covered bridges (on their own page with links to other pages), A-25 toll bridge, A-73 and QC 175 bridges in Quebec
* Finally, a visit up to Saguenay for a very special pyramid that you're sure to love.

http://www.alpsroads.net/roads - As always, comments, corrections, submissions, etc. are welcome and appreciated! Took me exactly 4 weeks for this update - if I can keep that kind of pace up, I'm through my current roads backlog by this time in 2013. Somehow, I doubt it.

First update of the new year, right on schedule for my "one update a month" plan. Highlights:

* Backyard railroad in Barnet - trust me, it's not just for railfans!
* A plethora of covered bridges in Vermont (with handy jumpoff page) and New Hampshire
* 11/12/11 Bennington Road Meet and VT 279 construction
* New photos from Israel
* New members of my sign collection

As always, comments, corrections, suggestions, submittals, etc. are always welcome. Coming next: the Midwest!

is that 11/12 a 16 or 18 inch set?  wow.

that looks to be one generation later than the 103/11.  the 103 and 11 are wood and have a square blank, with squared off corners - while the black border has rounded corners.

upon closer inspection, that 4 seems to be the same style as the 11 and 12, not the 103 and 11.

Speaking of UPDATE!

1,500 more photos have made their debut in Kentucky, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, with supporting cast in Indiana, Michigan, and a bit of Illinois. Highlights include the Bridges of Minneapolis, 10/1/11 Wausau Road Meet and US 10 (WI) construction, Cedarburg Covered Bridge (last authentic one in WI), I-69 construction near Evansville, and all sorts of Kentucky and Illinois truss bridges. Picher (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picher,_Oklahoma) is an interesting story, from an environmental point of view.  As you know, it was a lead and zinc mining town.  The cave-in risks were only a part of the abandonment; however, it is the mine tailings themselves that are the main reason for the abandonment.  The town had extremely elevated lead levels in the soil and in the people living there due to the mine tailings.  The final straw was the 2008 tornado that not only destroyed homes (that the Feds would not let be rebuilt) but also spread more dust from the toxic mine tailing piles.  Currently, it is a superfund site (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tar_Creek_Superfund_site).

Picher was founded by the Picher Lead Company which merged with the Eagle White Lead Company, forming Eagle-Picher.  They've been the subject of quite a few superfund sites, including a smelter in nearby (to Picher) Joplin, Missouri, and as the defendant in a lot of asbestos litigation.

On the Missouri US 69 page, you state that the Fairfax/Platte Purchase Bridges "is not and never was part of US 169"

US 169 moved from the 7th Street to the Broadway extension in the early 90's, when the tolls were pulled from the Broadway Bridge. Also, the Broadway Extension reconstruction won't be "several years ago," until at least 2015.

K-131: K-131 actually predates I-35, and ran from US 50 (the "Welcome to Lebo"sign) to the south city limits.

US 169 was moved from the Fairfax/Platte Purchase bridge to the Broadway bridge in 1995. The I-635 sign clearly predates 1995. As for the sign on the approach that you photographed, I'm thinking it's either a MoDOT goof or it was erected during the Broadway Extension closure in 2012.

My issue was with the statement that the Fairfax/Platte Purchase bridges "never was" designated 169 when, in fact, it was US 169

Regarding Virginia, a few comments about the (former) Va. 7100 (Fairfax County Parkway).

It's now Va. 286.

The big building under construction in your images at the Engineer Proving Grounds (now officially called Fort Belvoir North Area) is the main building of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), which  has been occupied for several years now.

I'll have to figure out what I want to do with that page - for example, I kept I-279 intact after half became I-376. Damn DOTs can't keep their hands off...

EDIT: Okay, figured it out. VA 286 it is.

Over 120 days? Then I'm long overdue for an update!
http://www.alpsroads.net/roads

Today's features: 44 covered bridges of southeastern PA (Bucks, Chester, Lancaster Counties; Schofield Ford and Thomas Mill Bridges; PA 23, 152, 252, and 501; US 30 east of York, and US 322 east of Harrisburg). In Maryland, we have the old US 50 bridge in Annapolis, the December 2011 ICC meet (part 2), and 90 other new pages with old bridges and former alignments. (Check out former MD 442 and MD 856 if you like 10-foot concrete roads from the 1910s.)

As always, comments, corrections, suggestions, etc. are welcomed!

The 10ft concrete roads are awesome. Love old alignments like that. Keep up the good work, Steve. I've found a few of these east of Dallas.

It's interesting that there are a lot of one lane country roads in East Texas, but not so much in West Texas

It's been too long. Tonight, live from Central Jersey, I bring you... Illinois! My US 66 pages are now complete from LA to Chicago, and the Joliet meet is up. I also have hundreds of Chicago-area truss photos that the FBI doesn't want you to see... too bad! Other highlights:
* Brick US 66 on the IL 4 page
* Old sign graveyard on Business I-55 in Springfield
* MacArthur Bridge stubs in East St. Louis (I survived!)
* Rare state-name shields on I-294 and (an original one!) Division St., Chicago

Pib on over to http://www.alpsroads.net/roads to peep it out!

It's been even too longer, but I've finally pushed out a homebrewed update with some local construction:
* DE 1/I-95 interchange (both pages)
* US 1-9 Truck at US 1-9 (both pages)
* US 206 bypass in Somerset Co. (also see CR 514)
* US 322 bypass in Mullica Hill

And over a thousand other photos. Peep, weep, but do not DARE to ogle-beep without Tim's permission, at http://www.alpsroads.net/roads. Comments, corrections, submissions, etc. are always welcome.

Steve, I was just checking out your page on US 13 south of Philadelphia, and you claim your coverage of the Crum Creek Keystone made either Pennsylvania, Delaware County, or  Woodlyn replace it.

http://www.alpsroads.net/roads/pa/us_13/s.html

If they did it because of you, that's great. I just wish that PennDOT or Philadelphia would replace the one in Angora back in 2013.

Steve, just a correction for the Illinois page and the Joliet Road Meet; it's Drauden Road (you have Drauden/Dryden).

The structure you took a photo of a Lake Renwick is part of a rookery.  It was built to provide nesting areas in the middle of the lake (former quarry).

The signals at the Cass Street and Jefferson Street bridges are meant for when traffic is temporarily diverted for work on the other bridge.  They have been one-way since the 1950s/1960s, and used to feature the STOP-type signals found in Chicago.  The modern traffic-light ones were installed in the late 1980s.

The Arsenal Road interchange was rebuilt due to the massive intermodal yards nearby.  These yards have substantially increased the volume of trucks at the interchange.

Hey Steve, just an FYI, I noticed there were some broken images on this page:

http://www.alpsroads.net/roads/de/de_5/

It also looks like the bottom image is incorrect, because unless I'm oblivious, there aren't any shields in that photo (which is the same as the one on the top of the page).

Darn you, Steve Alpert, I fell into the trap that is your site last night when someone posted links to pictures when comparing the CT and WV state route markers. About an hour later, I wandered out.

The city that used to be displayed in button copy but was replaced with Ironton was Chesapeake, Oh. I have some photos with that city included before it was changed. Signage was the same, and also changed, on I-64.

South Island non-roads will be next! I don't think anyone else has a NZ roads site yet, so enjoy! Comments, corrections, etc., whatever, always welcome.

Today is a very personal day for me, and not just because it's my birthday. My last regular website update was in August of 2016. I was in the middle of reconnecting with my ex, soon to become girlfriend again, then to become ex again. A lot was going on in my life. Before that, my last regular update was January of 2015, which is right before I'd met her the first time. It makes sense that I wasn't as active on the website when I was with her. But then we broke up as I moved into my new house. That was 2017. New Zealand Roads debuted in March of 2019 along with the first installment of Non-Roads. The second installment of Non-Roads was last month. There were a lot of negative emotions in that time, a lot of kicking myself and trying to get myself to work on my website, but my heart wasn't in it. With every month, every year, I felt my backlog grow as I got farther behind with my website. I would joke about photos I took in 2018 being ready for the website in 2025, but the truth was, I felt like it would never happen. I considered taking it down or just leaving it up in perpetuity and paying for it but never touching it again.
Today, I'm in a much better place. The first NZ upload helped, but only this year have I finally felt emotionally in the right place to get back into things. My hope is that as I progress into Australia, I can keep the updates on a more regular basis and rekindle the joy that this brings me. It's in there, but I have to be happy enough to find it. I would be thrilled with the birthday present of seeing the finality of my New Zealand pages in their painstaking glory:

https://www.alpsroads.net/www (latest update toward bottom)

If you read this whole thing, thank you, and I look forward to being a better Alps' Roads for you, my faithful viewers.

Speaking of backlogs, we're (meaning I'm) working nonstop to push out more (999-pixel wide) quality photos! After just one week, tonight's update is over 800 photos of Queensland Non-Roads (http://"https://www.alpsroads.net/www/qld"). Take a peep, and if you know your QLD mountains, feel free to offer up some corrections or additions. Speaking of "looks like it," I couldn't hit the midnight deadline, but I did get another state uploaded tonight. Every time it's more photos, isn't it! So take a trip through Victoria and spend at least 30% of your time in Melbourne, because that's the number of photos I have there plus how long it took me to sort through them and edit them. https://www.alpsroads.net/www/vic

With a mighty heave, I have completed all updates of The Land Down Under. You have no idea how difficult this was and how much it means to me to finally have uploaded all of the photos from this momentous 3-week trip. Come visit the non-roads of Tasmania and learn about its history and scenery. Then for a special treat, come check out my interview in 2 hours (18:00 Eastern, 17:00 Central, 15:00 Pacific, 8:00 Australian EST) on roadwaywiz's Youtube channel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mxsj08g_5T8).

I think those were both your meets. 2 in one year, similar area. It was interesting to relive that. Plus the infamous Tim Brown/Bunker Blast special that was Ashland.

Yep, they were mine, and I'm familiar with most all the routes you traveled to and from the meets. I didn't realize you'd gotten ill while at the Ashland meet. Same thing happened to you at Indiana a few years prior.

Looking at the VA US 52 page, I had down that US 221 was now in a concurrency with US 58 BUS (https://www.google.com/maps/@36.7493978,-80.7572558,3a,75y,63.91h,81.34t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sju4h5jhN8mSjlBy-QuHQUQ!2e0!7i16384!8i8192).  However, US 58 BUS for Hillsville is not in the 2019 Traffic Data for Carroll County (http://virginiadot.org/info/resources/Traffic_2019/AADT_017_Carroll_2019.pdf).

Odd. I can't remember if signage has been updated along old 58 in Hillsville, but as the Google Maps link you shared indicated, Business 58 is definitely signed as you approach downtown and the start of the new bypass from the west. I think it's also signed at the eastern end of the bypass, but I don't think I have any photos, having traveled through downtown to get clinches of both VA 100 and US 221 within Virginia.

One last update for June. Today I feature the 2012 Doylestown meet, PA 378 Hill to Hill Bridge, abandoned PA 402 Marshalls Creek bypass, a ton of old US 22 alignments, and some stuff not even in Pennsylvania. Last roads update on the year takes all of my 2012-2013 input for New Jersey and squeezes it into a couple hundred pages. It's a doozy. The main features are yet another road meet (Brick/Wall), old US 9W in the Palisades, and ongoing construction at Parkway Exits 88-89 and Turnpike Interchange 8. You know where to go. Why not get a head start on the new year? I was so excited to share the Ridge Route with you, I just had to get going. My first of the 2014-era updates features old US 99 through California and the various roads nearby. Other features include the 2014 Seattle Road Meet, abandoned WA 520 Arboretum Interchange, Alaskan Way construction, the Toontown tunnel (Griffith Park, CA), and a ton of ancient street signs and button copy from Los Angeles. Today I feature Oregon with over 1,000 photos centered on old US 99 and current US 101, along with a passel of bridges in Portland and beyond. I have also thoroughly revamped and upgraded content on the NJ Multiplex and 5xx Ends pages, something that's been in my queue for 15 years. So please do me the honor of viewing! Comments, questions, corrections, and particularly this time, submissions of multiplex and 5xx ends photo, all appreciated!

I have the 8 photos on Flickr, and you can see them here (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=70.msg2569804#msg2569804) (although you'll want larger versions than the ones I put there). Speaking of adding links:

UPDATE!
Featuring US 220 construction and old US 220 in PA, a ton of railroad bridge views and embossed signs (Kenilworth and Boonton Twp. are your hints) in NJ. You know the drill. https://www.alpsroads.net/roads

First time on your site, and this was a great first impression  :D (though correction, the signs say "Easton Way" for Exit 33 now, but still)...
QuoteBasically, an elaborate and expensive system was set up to prevent traffic from Exit 32 accessing either Exit 30 or Exit 33. Why? A bunch of rich people who like their "Easton" development and don't want the east side mucketymucks mucking it up (it's what they do best). Exit 33 is signed for Easton, which doesn't exist; what does exist is Easton Way and a shopping center. The Exit 33 overpass, which you can see on the corresponding counterclockwise page (see link at bottom), is also labeled "Easton." So incredibly pretentious of them
Also all the button copy photos for Ohio, a blast from the past.

You would be surprised how much I needed to read this reaction post. :) Interesting that they realized their error and corrected the signs.

An NJ update (20 photos in all) including CR 502, 507, 511, Bergen Co. was announced around 10 PM.
Followed by an NY update (similar volume) including NY 59, I-87 Thruway, Old NY 17, a random Exxon on US 9W, and most importantly, a NEW PAGE! for Rockland CR 97.

Next time could you please update the changelog on your website itself? Because currently it's at 2021, and you had me worried when I came to revisit your site on a whim.

I'm doing little bit changes here, and probably going to take down the change log entirely.

In the meantime: Added 2 photos to each of the Morris Roads (https://www.alpsroads.net/roads/nj/morris) and Morris Non-Roads (https://www.alpsroads.net/www/nj/morris) pages from Main St. in Roxbury.
EDIT: And 26 subway tile photos to NYC Subway (https://www.alpsroads.net/www/ny/subway).
EDIT 2: And a few more NJ photos, featuring an old bridge on CR 527 in New Brunswick (https://www.alpsroads.net/roads/nj/cr_527/s.html) and an old bridge sign on US 202 in Oakland (https://www.alpsroads.net/roads/nj/us_202/1.html). And this:
