I love Holiday. It's where I normally go when I have to stop for gas and etc. anywhere in Minnesota. I hope the buyout doesn't screw it up.

Seattle has most of what everyone else has, so I'm going to list what we don't have:

Restaurants we don't have: TGI Fridays, Ruby Tuesdays, Tony Romas, Chili's, Cracker Barrel, White Castle, In-and-out, Culver's, or Dunkin' Donuts. Until recently, no Sonic's or Chick-Fil-A's either.

Big stores we mostly don't have: Dillards, Bon-Ton, HEB, Publix, SuperValu, very few CVS's, very few Sam's Clubs (this is Costco country).

Gas stations we don't have: Exxon, BP, Texaco, Sheetz, WaWa.

When I first saw the thread title I thought:  Oh-- a discussion about tire chains (necessitating a trip to the garage).  But now that I see what's up, I can give you a local San Jose list:
Fast food:  the usual -- Mc D's, BK, Wendy's, Carls' Jr., KFC, Taco Bell (urp), In & Out.  Better sit-down/takeout food:  Fish Market (NorCal exclusive), Fuddrucker's, Red Robin, Chili's, Five Guys, Famous Dave's (BBQ), Panda Express, Armadillo Willy's (again, BBQ), Rubio's, L& L Hawaiian Express, etc.  When you get out on the road, there's Cattleman's (with a few locations mostly along I-80), which has a better-than-decent steak (more consistent quality than Outback or Stuart Anderson's). 

Buying stuff:  WalMart, Target, Ross, Marshall's (my GF's fave!), Best Buy, Fry's, and what's left of the mall-based department stores: Nordstrom, Gap, Macy's, Forever 21.

Groceries: Safeway, Lucky, Grocery Outlet (another NorCal feature), Trader Joe's, Smart & Final, Nob Hill/Raley's (dependent upon specific town), and Whole Paycheck (whoops, Whole Foods! -- have to see about that nickname now that Amazon's taken over -- only go in there for pre-prepared stuff anyway!). 

Fuel:  Union 76, Chevron, Arco, Valero, Exxon/Mobil (becoming ever rarer!), Rotten Robbie (they've taken over several Mobil locations), and scores of independent convenience stores with a few pumps.

Now you all know what's out here in the world of familiar places when you visit.  However, do take a little time and search out the independent places:  Bibo's (Willow Glen) and Angie's (Campbell area) for pizza, Smoking Pig (near the airport and in Fremont) or Blue Rock (Cambrian Park) for BBQ, Tlaquepaque (Willow Glen) and Mexico Lindo (Willow Glen & The Alameda) for good Mexican food, Thaibodia (Meridian off 280) and Krung (Winchester Blvd near Santana Row) for Thai, 4-5-6 (Santa Clara) and Great Wall (Willow Glen) for Chinese -- and Mojo Burgers (several locations in south San Jose) for hamburgers.  I could stretch this post on for another couple of paragraphs, but I'll refrain.  If any posters are in SJ, PM me for any more restaurant advice!

I'm not going to try to echo everything others have listed. Main ones I haven't noticed so far are Potbelly's (sandwich chain based in Chicago), Fleming's (steakhouse), the Palm (steak and seafood), Oceanaire (seafood), Wegmans (grocery chain based in Rochester), and LL Bean (I assume everyone knows LL Bean; they have a store at Tysons).

Hardee's was supposed to be returning to New England, but they seem to have hit a wall in Poughkeepsie.  No White Castle either; couple on Long Island and in Rockland County.  Cici's and Jimmy John's have yet to pop in CT. Krystal, Zaxby's, Whataburger, In-n-Out, and Jack in the Box aren't within 500 miles.  Waffle House stops in PA, nearest Perkins is in Newburgh.   Checkers tested things with one location and failed (funny thing is Sonic opened just down the street a couple weeks after Checkers closed).  Wegmans just skipped over CT and went to Metro Boston.  My town is supposed to be getting the first New England locations of Fazoli's, Mellow Mushroom Pizza, and Mission BBQ.

We have all the common restaurant chains; here in Phoenix, we have a local chain of Italian restaurants called Babbos which serves very good food. Some local Mexican restaurant chains are Macayos and Garcia's, neither of which have good food. A local chain of 50's-style diners is called 5-and-Diner.

Grocery stores: Safeway, Sprouts, Albertson's, Fry's (a Kroger chain) and Basha's.

Right near my house I have a Longhorn, A Steak & Shake, a Seven Eleven, Cracker Barrel, Ruby T, and a Fridays.  Marco Pizza is somewhat one.

Big Box I have a Target, a Walmart Neighborhood Market, and a Bealls Outlet. Smaller stores include Dollar Tree, Pet Smart, and CVS.

Orlando in general has em all except Jack In The Box, Bojangles (we did but someone thought to pull the plug on them here), Whataburger (as we had them, but Orlando got them all closed despite Jacksonville, Tallahassee, and many other FL cities are allowed to have them.   

I Drive, the tourist strip, pretty much has them all of the ones that are major that is.
