Welcome! / Hello from DelMarPa!

(I couldn't find an official name for it...)

Hello everyone! I'm from the pennsylvania-maryland-delaware area but am currently residing in North Carolina for college.

I think i first really started getting into roads once I started driving and becoming fascinated with how things connected together; travelling back and forth between multiple state lines every day certainly helped with that. Specifically, it was probably the enigma that is Maryland 591. State routes are certainly my favorite.

I've been keeping travel logs since late high school; most unfortunately were lost because Google Drive decided to delete my file instead of renaming it :banghead: but most of it I still have on recollection or scratch notes. Rebuilding what I had on travelmapping.net has made me learn that perhaps just "seeing" the route doesn't make it count. I've got a lot of driving to do. Before learning travelmapping existed I had been working on my own webapp - it didn't get very far unfortunately but I could add places I've been directly into the site rather than setting up a github/email/etc.

Alas, I am glad to be here and am looking forward to meeting all of you.

Quote from: The Ghostbuster on June 30, 2025, 02:58:04 PMStoughton Rd. was originally called the East Madison Beltline, but I believe that name died out pretty quickly. As much as I'd like US 51 to be completely freeway between US 12/18 and Interstates 39/90/94, I realize it will never happen (due to the existence of the forementioned Interstates).

Neither WisDOT nor the feds will allow more interchanges to be added along I-19/90/94 nor WI 30.  It is a pure bypass highway system for longer distance regional and through traffic.  Stoughton Rd already has oodles of local traffic on it (with calls from others upthread in here for more lanes and local access interchanges).  As long as personal vehicles remain popular, that traffic will continue to increase (I don't want to be here when the need for SERIOUS upgrades for its interchange at the Beltline comes due).

Metric speed limit signs are actually a thing: https://nysroads.com/photos.php?route=us11&state=NY&file=102_6697.JPG

My sister did that for her high school textbooks, then she'd color them artistically with markers.
I remember one time a teacher made us do that for our textbooks as a homework assignment.  I thought the whole thing was stupid.

While I don't travel to state lines on all these highways, I certainly memorize the exit numbers of common junctions.

For instance, when I head out west, I know on I-64, Exit 200 and Exit 177 is I-295 to bypass Richmond, and Exit 87 is I-81. Exit 264 is I-664 to take the MMMBT.

I know I-81 Exit 221 heading north is the exit for I-64. I-81 tends to get a little busier north of the southern I-64 junction, especially after the 7 mile three lane segment ends, so it's nice mentally knowing I'm getting off soon especially if there are walls of trucks going 55-60 mph in both lanes (70 mph zone).

It's been years since I have used I-81 north of I-64 in totality (a couple small segments for shorter trips is all), but I know I-81 is roughly around 325 miles.

In North Carolina, I've memorized that I-95 is around 182 miles as I have used that route several times in recent years.

Mid-South / Re: New Corpus Christi Harbor ...

It's displaying on Google Maps now, but is not interactive yet - directions won't take you over it.

Right now if someone visiting and unfamiliar with the area was traveling from North Beach to Corpus Christi, Google routes them on a 30 minute detour via the Joe Fulton Corridor and I-37.

It's tourism season during the summer, and especially with 4th of July weekend. There's several attractions on North Beach such as the Texas State Aquarium and the USS Lexington museum ship, likely to bring visitors with N Padre Island not far away.

It makes me wonder why the DOTs don't work with Google Maps and other mapping software to ensure these new routes are displayed when they open, especially when you're closing an old road with it... not several days later.

When I bought my most recent car (from a private party here in Wisconsin), I just mailed in the paperwork and bolted the plates from the old car onto the new one.  Pretty simple.
