When this was OK 117, did Peoria head due south and have a 5 way intersection with 71st and Riverside?  Or did 117 hop onto Riverside for a few feet?

Short answer: yes

Longer answer: The 71st St Bridge was finished at the same time the extension of Riverside south from 56th to 71st was completed.  That's when Peoria was "bent" west to 71st to avoid the mess of an intersection that would have otherwise resulted.

It's enough of a mess as it is, as the light on Peoria at Riverside stays red for about 3 minutes at a time.

Did 71st westbound curve north into Peoria northbound?  Looking at the aerials, it appears it could have done that.

I think the stretch of road coming off the south end of Peoria may be fooling you a bit. It might be old alignment, but where it curves east, next to 71st, is just a serivce road for the development there.

That's the reason I thought that curved road might be the original connection between Peoria and 71st.

I stand corrected. My apologies... a very logical assumption indeed on your part!

THere is nothing left of the curve where Peoria turned east and became 71st. I'm not sure why ODOT shows a "spur" south unless there was a small access road I'm not remembering.

There was a short (about two-block-long) spur of Peoria Ave. just south of the curve at 71st. There were a few small houses along there, but at rte66man says, it's all gone now.
