Title: 2018 World Series
Post by: jp the roadgeek on October 19, 2018, 12:00:40 AM
WELCOME TO SOXTOBAH!!     Beat the Yankees , and an impressive showing taking 3 in Houston against the defending champs.  And now we wait: will it be a rematch of the 1916 Series, or a former AL East matchup?

I'm betting all on a rematch of the 1916 Series. Don't think a simple AL East matchup is gonna cut it for this year.

I betting on a Brewers-Red Sox series. Brewers win games 6 and 7 over the Dodgers, you heard it here first. Go Brew Crew!

I am a Sox fan, but gladdens me most is that this won't be Houston representing the AL AND Milwaukee representing the NL. That wouldn't seem right to me.

Okay, the World Series start tonight. It's Red Sox against Dodgers, so I don't have a clear favorite.

If you love/hate Liverpool FC, they are owned by Fenway Sports Group, the owners of the Red Sox.

Lebron owns 2% of the team as well.

Since I used to live in L.A., I'm going with the Dodgers. It's a bit strange to see Boston and L.A. play for a championship in something other than basketball (remember all those Celtics-Lakers Finals?). Also, Super Bowl XXXVI gets an asterisk, because the Patriots are actually based in Foxborough (approximately 30 miles outside Boston), and the Rams were based in St. Louis at the time.

If the Rams could move back to LA, perhaps the Arizona Cardinals could move back to Chicago.

Believe it or not the Rams were originally based in Cleveland. Also the Cardinals were originally known as the Racine Normals.

But then you'd have to have the Bears move back to Decatur and the Lions would have to move back to Portsmouth, OH.  Portsmouth would then replace Green Bay as the smallest city in professional sports (pop. 20k)

The Bears, when they were originally based in Decatur, were named the Staleys. The Lions were named the Portsmouth Spartans when they were originally based there.

Game 3 was the longest game in WS history for both innings and time

and now in game 4 Boston was down 4-0 but has roared back to take a 9-4 lead

And the Sox take it 9-6 after some more anxious Kimbrel moments.  Now 1 win away from a title.

And lest us forget the Hartford Blues.  Lasted all of 1 NFL season (1926) and went 3-7.

Let us not forget the Hartford Dark Blues, a charter member of the National League in 1876. Their 47-21 regular season record was better percentage-wise than the Red Sox in 2018.

They moved to Brooklyn in 1877 and became the Brooklyn Hartfords, a naming tradition that sadly did not catch on. (Go Sacramento KansasCitys! Go Carolina Hartfords!). After one season there, they disbanded.

The team's owner, and the first president of the NL, was a guy named Morgan G. Bulkeley. He was a mayor, a Senator, and a governor, as well as president of Aetna Life Insurance Company; and (back on topic), there's a bridge on I-84 named after him.

Before the National League, there was the National Association. The Dark Blues were members, as were (briefly) the New Haven Elm Citys and the Middletown Mansfields.

I guess if the Dodgers lost again, there'll be another Downfall parody clip where Hitler is angry about the Dodgers loss. ;)

One guy have another theory about why the Dodgers hadn't won a World Series since 1988. That or the Cubs gived them the Billy Goat curse to the Dodgers. ;)

If the Red Sox win, it would be first time that a team won the World Series twice exactly 100 years apart.

Good luck to the Reds next year.

They'll need a lot of it.

First time since 2011 that the same team lost two consecutive World Series...as well as the first NL team since 1992 to do so.

Isn't it funny how fortunes can be reversed in the 21st century, with the Red Sox, White Sox and my beloved Cubs breaking their curses? Who would've guessed that the Red Sox would have more championships than the Yankees, or that the Giants would win (2010, 2012 and 2014) before the Dodgers did?

You can bet on the 2023 Yankees to do the same thing
