"Historic" miles are based on original routing.  Improvements to the highway have led to it being somewhat shorter.

"Historic" miles are based on original routing.  Improvements to the highway have led to it being somewhat shorter.

The Alaska Highway has lots of historic mileposts. They help travelers locate events from the original construction of the highway, and also businesses whose addresses are based on historic mileposts rather than the recalibrated-every-five-years km-markers.

For a non-historic milepost that's a closer match to historic mile 627 than Pottawattamie CR L36, here's milepost 25 on Alaska's McCarthy Road within Wrangell-St. Elias National Park:

Then they should be called 'historical', not 'historic'.  It should only be called 'historic' if something significant happened at that milepost.
