California State Route 274 was a six-mile State Highway which was located in the city of San Diego along Balboa Avenue. California State Route 274 was first defined during 1965 and the initial segment from Interstate 5 to Interstate 805 would be complete by 1971. California State Route 274 would be extended to California State Route 163 by the mid-1970s and eventually to Interstate by the late 1980s. California State Route 274 was deleted by the legislature during 1999 but signage remained in place during much of the first decade of the 2000s. California State Route 274 can be seen along Balboa Avenue on the blog cover as it was displayed on the 1990 Caltrans Map.

I remember this route still being fully signed as late as 2003. I didn't know it was already deleted at the time. Might rival CA-42 for best signed deleted route.
Another deleted Highway in the San Diego area that was partially built was the CA 252 connector. It was to have connected Interstate 5 with Interstate 805. All that exists of CA 252 is the roadway that connects Interstate 805 at Exit 11A (northbound, southbound it is Exit 11B) with S. 43rd St.

CA 252 was the focus of one of my teenage fictional highway fantasies, while I lived in northern San Diego County. Then that fell victim to a freeway revolt by the largely Hispanic neighborhoods it would've plowed through.
The remnant 43rd St. interchange with I-805 is an impressively overpowered interchange, given what happened to the rest of 252. My hunch was that the interchange was built while that part of 805 was still under construction, and it was easier to build it before 805 was opened to traffic rather than wait for the rest of 252.

(The number is a little special to me, also, because I won the Pinewood Derby as a Cub Scout with a car numbered 274. It was so ridiculously front-heavy that it just raced through the ramps even though I didn't do much else to it other than angle the front and paint it brown. Fun fact.)
