Title: Cancelled and Stealth Cancelled Projects
Post by: 3467 on April 16, 2019, 12:01:50 PM
I want to thank ilpt4u for correcting me on the Shawnee parkway. I cannot find an official cancellation. So with our passive aggressive DOT I thought I would start a new thread. There may be some overlap . I mention stealth since some are EISs left to wither. Also with the statements of Senator Sandavol I suspect we will see some more. I will post some links later.
I will start with the Interstates. None. All the original Interstates were completed and all but the later additions except the crosstown were completed. It still exists in onto 2050 on life support. There is some question about Lake Shore Drive.
Supplemental Freeways Illinois 1 . EPA  hammered it in the early corridor studies due to proximity to US 41. I would be interested to hear from Rick Powell if it was ever discussed in District 3.
67 North of Monmouth. FHWA said same thing as EPA in IL 1 and suggested a74 67 combo.
Very recently US 30 due to public opposition. Will get a link later.

How are you defining that? Look at 67 in IN/MI here.

Also, he didn't specify it...but given what he mentioned plus his past posts, it's pretty clear he's talking about Illinois.  And that proposed "I-67" from the late '50s was not in Illinois.

Yes Froggie I did just mean Illinois in my post but feel free to include the whole region . I thought it might be a good link to see if your highway idea belongs here or fictional

US 30 now fictional unless you want to discuss passing lanes

US 12 was once to be converted to freeway standards from Madison, all the way into Illinois. There was a study to eventually build a US 12 Fort Atkinson bypass utilizing some of the existing STH-26 bypass, but that study was suspended several years ago. There was also a study to connect the Whitewater Bypass with the US 12 freeway at Elkhorn. That study was suspended in 2016, and the likelihood of that project ever being constructed seems very unlikely to me.

US 10 east of I-39 proposed new corridor was recently cancelled I believe.  The current highway goes through a city street with an expressway/freeway on both sides.

Other than staring at the Supplemental Freeway map on the wall in the Bureau of Planning when I was in for the winter...whatever momentum IL 1 had for improvement is up in District 1. And I would also count the IL 394 corridor here. I was on a study of the Chicago Heights - Sauk Village area recently for Cook County, and there is some investment potential for new business along 394 near Sauk Trail, a lot of vacant land near the existing expressway which is rather scarce in Chicagoland. Also the proposed Crete CSX intermodal. Long-range, IDOT has looked at making IL 394 fully access controlled all the way from US 30 to the IL 1 junction south of Crete. South of there, it would depend if the South Suburban Airport ever got legs. Beecher has talked on and off again about an IL 1 western bypass aligned on Ashland Avenue, and it was looked at for compatibility by the Illiana study a few years ago. Other than that, I don't see any further momentum or need south to Danville to add lanes.

Thanks. I had always wondered about Illinois 1 it seemed the oddest corridor There was a route one asks nation out of Mt Carmel that existed it seems from sometime in the 70s to the 90s and that one corridor study. I also found it mentioned in the recent US 45 widening. It just said same as 30 no traffic North of this point.
I was once told by IDOT planning the supplementary freeway were never official ....I limited out they were in the annual reports from 1972 to 1979.
That is another reason I used stealth cancellation. Illinois 1 just faded away. The really interesting on is that 30 story. This is cancelled Maybe in town repairs and passing lanes. Just a real change in IDOTs passive aggressive for many orojects.

Guess you could argue the original system in Illinois was not completed due to the 64 relocation.

Wonder if the Houbolt Road Toll Bridge over the Des Plaines might be in the stealth cancelled category?  Seems to have been fairly quiet lately.

I think we will get a better idea in a month. They have to work out budget and any capital bill. But I have a hunch that any project in a district who's rep v I red no will have a cancellation of stealth cancellation.

This is probably the latest Houbolt Road news. Looks like anywhere from this spring to this fall for groundbreaking, but the project has already seen some delays.
