Seems like every time we get a technical issue, we blame the Chinese and/or Russians for it...
Go Cubs Go! Go Cubs Go! Hey Chicago, what do you say? The Cubs are gonna win today!

I wonder how long public calls for more 'redundancy' in the system will be going . . .

Did they mention the credit amount? Half of a day of service or a bit more?

Nope.  My bet: A coupon for some sort of stupid wireless accessory.

Per this news article, it's a $5 credit. https://www.kwtx.com/2024/02/25/att-announces-5-credit-after-widespread-outage/

And before people go hypercrazy, unless you're paying more than $150 per month, $5 is more than what you're paying for 1 day of service.

Local internet provider tries to be helpfull, but for specifically anal customers they scale service credit by the hour. So 10-20 cents credit for 1-2 hour midday interruption.

Quote from: SectorZ on February 23, 2024, 01:01:35 PMI knew the media didn't know what they were talking about when they started discussing MVNO providers being down as well like they all had their own towers.

In English... Mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) in the United States lease wireless telephone and data service from the three major cellular carriers in the country, AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile US, and Verizon. Allvoi Wireless, Beast Mobile, Cricket Wireless, easyGO Wireless, FreedomPop, Straight Talk, Tracfone, Boost Mobile, and Pulse Cellular are all MVNOs that partially or completely use AT&T's cellular network.
I'm an Engineer. That means I solve problems. Not problems like "What is beauty?", because that would fall within the purview of your conundrums of philosophy. I solve practical problems and call them "paychecks".

Yes and it's always politically loaded too.

To be fair, early reports made it seem like all cell networks were down simultaneously for most of the country, and it hard to see that coming from anything less than a cyberattack (the fact that it came a day after a controversial UN vote didn't help).  We now know that those reports were in error, probably caused by the fact that AT&T wasn't communicating and the media was just regurgitating Downdetector (which had erroneous reports for Verizon and T-Mobile caused by roaming or trying to call a number that's with AT&T or an AT&T-reselling MVNO).

Meh.  Perhaps the jump to "cyberattack" is merely the assumption of a public that has seen too many Mission: Impossible movies.

The other thing to remember is that "cyber attack" is often a synonym to "admin watching bad porn"

And when did similar accusations occur?  The KC Superbowl parade shooting, and then not too long before that, when the car crashed into the queue area of the US/Canada border crossing.

The news media can freely lob sky-is-falling assumptions because they hide behind the 2nd amendment. But this stuff needs to be looked at, possibly by the FCC or Congress.  The media can't keep yelling out terrorist/cyber/mass attacks, only for it to be much more mundane in nature.

AT&T will give $5 to customers hit by cellphone network outage.
I wonder if mvno would get anything from the mothership. and if they do, would they pass anything to customers

It may not be a bad idea, the way some people act when there's a reporter doing a live shot.

That said, ok, I'll dial that back to the 1st amendment.

AT&T will give $5 to customers hit by cellphone network outage.

Wow.  Help me to find a container for my joy.

I had referenced this amount in another post above.  I also made mention that for most customers, that $5 is actually more than what the daily rate would be for service.

I have DirecTV. In the early morning hours yesterday, we had a big booming storm with thunder so loud it shook my house a couple of times. Afterwards, we got the dreaded "771 Satellite Signal Loss" error message. It had not resolved itself by the time I went in to work yesterday during the late morning. I later found out that there was a systemwide satellite signal outage. It made me wonder, since AT&T owns DirecTV, if perhaps something similar that caused AT&T's outage last Thursday hadn't also caused DirecTV's outage yesterday.

Government would be tolerable if not for politicians and bureaucrats.

AT&T sold off DirecTV in August 2021.

From ABC News:

FirstNet outage concern for some law enforcement leaders
FirstNet is run by AT&T and was affected by last week's outage.
QuoteWhen FirstNet, the emergency communications network, went out of service last Thursday morning, some law enforcement officials who spoke with ABC News said they feared it would be impossible to communicate with first responders in a crisis.

Born out of 9/11, the First Responder Network Authority was signed into law by President Barack Obama in 2012 and offers a single "interoperable network" for public safety.

The system is run off the AT&T network, which went down Thursday because of a software update gone wrong, the company said.
