New project website at https://idot.illinois.gov/projects/florence-bridge-project

It states that construction of the new bridge is anticipated to begin in 2024.

The new design is a composite steel girder/concrete deck bridge with sufficient clearance for river traffic, replacing the existing mechanical lift truss bridge.

As I recall this bridge has been closed several times for fixes and I think it was hit by a loose barge10 or 12 years ago.

Anyway, this pulley damaging one of the trusses is a pretty good reason.

I was the consultant project manager for Phase I, which came in fairly close to schedule considering we had to switch gears with the preferred alternative due to a newly discovered historic resource. As I understand it, there were many complications with buying the land for the project. The $64 question might be, do we fix the old bridge one more time, or leave it closed awaiting construction of the new one? At a similar lift bridge location (Illinois 351) IDOT elected to do a $1 million repair to failed mechanical parts, only a year before the bridge was demolished to make way for a new fixed-span bridge.

Back in operation, pending a few additional closures to finalize repairs. And an interesting back-story leading up to the crash on the bridge.

Bonnie & Clyde hit Florence.

That is a long chase. Must have been a chilly swim.
