More of A-85 is getting opened... this time, the full freeway is open from km 80 to 86, with the remaining "tronçon 2" getting fully opened by 2022.

One carriageway of that segment has been opened to two-way traffic for several weeks. I drove that segment, in both directions, earlier this month. I'm counting that as a clinch of the extended northern part of A-85, though of course there will be one or more further extensions to Saint-Louis-du-Ha! Ha! that will complete the freeway to the New Brunswick border.

According to this PDF from the official MTQ site, the plan seems to be in seven segments.

Autoroutes that stay within 90 degrees of their signed direction:
13, 19, 25, 31, 70

19 and 31 head on a consistent diagonal and in fact always head NW-SE. Meanwhile, A-85 does not stay within 90 degrees of north-south, but it DOES stay within 90 degrees of east-west, so that just proves it should be a second segment of A-70 and a new bridge should be built to connect them.

Anybody coming from Ontario would turn off 102 further north though.

Getting a bit off topic here!

It's almost a wash...but the NS102 to NS101 freeway is still faster and anyone familiar would take this route. I drove Truro-Mt. Uniacke for work for a couple of years and never went though Rawdon....always 102/101.

A tourist might take NS14 or NS236 as they are shorter by kms. But with the lower speeds, twists and turns and getting behind farm equipment or school buses...you certainly don't save any time! If I was a tourist...I would take NS215 along the Noel Shore and Burntcoat Head to see the Fundy Tides!

Seconded.  Super fun drive.

Random sign find: a trailblazer leading from Autoroute Dufferin-Montmorency towards Autoroute Charest (unconnected segments of Québec City's A-440). However, it's the only trailblazer between the two freeways I recall seeing.

Street View, for reference.

Just to return back to A-85,...

Can somebody at the MTQ can explain why they decide to give exit number 85 to the ramps going towards Chemin de Riviere-Verte? Normally, the exit number is corresponding to the place the road is crossing the highway, like at the overpass/underpass.  But in this case, the km marker, at the underpass, is 86.5, so it would be exit 86, not 85.  This situation caused some confusion, because the contractor had to place some more signs to indicate the exit 85 is not highway A-85.

:pan:
- How many people are working in here?
- About 20%.

- What Quebec highways and Montreal Canadiens have in common?
- Rebuilding.

States/provinces/territories I didn't went in: AB, AK, AL, BC, HI, KS, LA, MB, MN, MS, MT, ND, NL, NT, NU, RI, SD, SK, WA, WI, YT.  Well, I still have some job to do!

But who would confuse an exit number (in yellow) with an Autoroute shield (in blue)?

I don't put anything past drivers these days.  The "lowest common denominator" is pretty darn low...

The same people that caused Louisiana to post "TO-I-59" trailblazers at the LA-59/I-12 intersection.  Apparently people don't know the difference between a 2 to 4 lane side road with a green state shield with the outline of the state of Louisiana and a red, white and blue shield that signs a 4-lane limited access freeway.

I guess that's a holdover from old directions "hang a left on 59!"

AsphaltPlanet

A series of supplemental through signs were installed at the Westney Road interchange in Ajax along the 401 because Westney Road is Exit # 401.  Presumably someone was confused about the exit number:

Kinda sad to see a toll era interchange go, but I get why they'd reconstruct it.

You and me, definitely not, but it seems to confuse some people.  But now that the highway is open on 4 lanes, everything is back to normal.

Piles bridge, the bridge at A-55's end, was closed yesterday due to unpredictable structural failures. The bridge is one of the four remaining prestressed concrete box girder bridges in the province, known to be problematic. Its ratings are 11.6 kvpd, 14% trucks. Trucks are now detoured via R-153, R-359 and A-40; the use of Grand-Mère bridge (between Saint-Georges-de-Champlain and Grand-Mère) and 125e Rue/Rang Saint-Mathieu (between Shawinigan-Sud and Lac-à-la-Tortue) are strongly discouraged for commercial vehicles while they are the recommended route for passenger cars.

A new bridge is expected in 2025.
