Title: Gauging interest in an AARoads Forum bracket challenge
Post by: OCGuy81 on March 03, 2021, 08:57:17 AM
Curious who might be interested in filling out a bracket once the college basketball tournament starts?

No wagers, but the winner receives bragging rights on the forum.  :-D

I wanted to ask early to see who might be interested, and which site I can use to host the pool. I'm thinking either Yahoo or CBS Sports. I've used the latter to run workplace pools and they're easy to set up and track.

Any takers?

Doesn't Alps usually do one every year?

Oh cool, glad to see some interest.

If someone here already runs one, I'll gladly let him. Otherwise I'll look into setting one up.

I don't do it every year, but I've done it before. I cede to you to get us started.

Okay, will do.

Thinking I'll host it on CBS Sports. I'll post here again on Sunday when the selections are made with the info.

Yes. And I may do a mock-up bracket as well like I did in 2016-18. I remember 2018, which was the only time ever a number 16 seed defeated a number 1 and busting most of the brackets.

Deal me in. Basketball isn't one of my favorite sports but this year I've made sure to watch more college basketball, as I'm intent on building a bracket dynasty within my family. Might as well expand my reign to AARoads as well, right?

Here's the details on the group I set up.

I used ESPN. You'll need to create a free account. I'm using the app, but I imagine the site is similar. Here's the details.

- When you choose to create a bracket, you have an option to join a group.

- The group is AARoads Forum and the password is interstate366 (lower case)

- For the name of your bracket, please use your forum name so we know who is who.

- I'll post results after each round.

Good luck, everyone!!

This is fake news. You grouped posters in some semblance of geographical order. If this was a real bracket, posters would be scattered all over the place. And I would have been put in the West because the NCAA hates Calipari.

My alma mater will be playing this year. Morehead State beat Belmont in the OVC Tournament finals. While this is great for my school, it's not so great for the OVC's chances at an upset. Belmont was a legit Top 25 team this year and was unbeaten in the league until the last two games of the regular season (losses on the "Death Valley" road trip to Eastern Kentucky and Morehead). MSU had a good year, but they'll get a 15 seed in the tournament unless several conference tournaments get won by teams with losing records. The OVC probably would have been better served by sending their regular season champion to the NCAA. They had that option this year. Belmont may end up getting an at-large bid, though.

I'm going with a different strategy in a much different tournament compared to past editions. I'm picking heavily against less strong conferences (i.e. 1-3 tournament bids) because the decreased number of OOC games means that those teams might not be ready to play other quality teams. I expect the Big Ten and Big 12 in particular to roll because teams in those conferences have been playing a gauntlet schedule all year, and might be pleasantly surprised by the lowered level of their competition through the first couple rounds. The reason why I'm sharing my strategy is because it sounds good on paper but I am not confident that it will actually work.

There was legitimate fear this year that the state of Kentucky might not be represented in the tournament (https://www.kentucky.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/mark-story/article249371875.html) but my Morehead State Eagles put an end to that fear.

Things are already not looking so hot for my entry. Arkansas is down by 8 to Colgate . . . I have the Hogs in the final 4. Yikes, I hope they figure it out.

Luckily for you, they did. Colgate ran out of gas and got pasted.

So far been a good day for the Big 12. 3-0 with a chance to go 4-0.

Nope. I had Ohio losing in the Round of 32 in both of them, so I'm only busted for one round. Actually doing quite well relative to normal, so I'mma day 1 brag about being in 1st place in our group (highest possible points), knowing that I'm about to be completely screwed and end up 12th place in the end.

My bracket was sitting in a dismal T-14th place out of 16 at one point last night. But I went 4/4 on the late wave of games, including two upsets. Now I'm back in the mix, up to T-6th.

It also might be worth noting that I have the second most maximum possible points of the group right now, as I've only lost one sweet 16 team (Ohio State) and still have all my elite 8 teams. Knock on wood.

After going a career worst 17/32 in the round of 64, I have a lot less to lose this round so BRING ON THE CARNAGE!

I only had Illinois and Ohio State going so far that their losses don't hurt much. Two years ago I went 28-32 in the opening round, and ended up finishing last because I only got 1/8 Elite Eight teams. Final Four picks are worth 8x the points of any R64 game, and 7/8 of my E8 teams remain which is why even in last I'm not sweating it yet.

Syracuse's 75-72 upset win over West Virginia moves me into stand-alone first place at 270 points. But with my national champion pick (Illinois) out of the tournament, we'll see if it sticks.

Thanks. Arkansas, Villanova, and Syracuse came up big for me. Illinois, on the other hand . . . despite the fact that I have a 40 point lead, I feel that my only chance of winning, or even finishing in the top half for that matter, is if Gonzaga loses before they get to the national title game. Preferably to Iowa in the Elite 8, but I'll take it however I can get it. Even though I have them beating OU, I'm rooting for them to lose today because I'm one of the only people in our group who doesn't have them in the Final Four.

Michigan's 76-58 win over Florida State moves me back into first place at 610 points. To have any chance at holding on to that lead, I most likely need somebody other than Gonzaga, Michigan, Baylor, or Alabama to win it all. Go Arkansas?

And now we have Pac-12 After Dark, NCAA Tourney Style, for the last Elite Eight spot, in USC/Oregon
