Title: Thrilling Rollercoasters
Post by: MultiMillionMiler on November 26, 2022, 03:45:42 PM
My personal favorite is Fury325! Rode it almost 100 times on my 3 day trip to Carowinds in Charlotte, North Carolina. Actually the park is in both North and South Carolina. This rollercoaster passes through both states (maybe it should receive an interstate designation lol). It won the Rollercoaster Golden Awards for 6 years straight as the best steel rollercoaster in the world. It is fast, smooth, comfortable seats/restraints, doesn't do anything weird like going upside down or launch, and the first drop is a good 5 second sustained free fall. Living on Long Island, Six Flags Great Adventure is my "home park" but is very boring in comparison. Fury 325 is almost a perfect rollercoaster. Anyone else love rollercoasters? What are your experiences?

I thought you hate grades over 7 percent?

Oh wait, you want every road to be like a rollercoaster.   There is one in Tampa, that goes straight down.  What interstate do you want to be like that?

Roller coasters have too many curves for MMM.

Any rollercoaster that makes me fear for my life like the curves on the PA Turnpike

I knew who the OP was as soon as I saw the title.

There was some theme park ride called the West Virginia Turnpike. Go into the Ohio Valley Mid-Atlantic regional board and look for the thread "West Virginia Turnpike"; open to the first page.

I don't get him. Main St. in Cattaraugus is too steep for a state road, yet he wants over 24% on a new interstate, because being straight is more important than being drivable at 70 MPH, apparently.

Just like how the Jersey Turnpike is a near perfect road? It doesn't have anything weird like curves and hills.  :bigass:

And the designation for the Fury325 is I-325 (just hope they don't use that for a new spur into Casper, Wyoming LOL)!

A roller coaster at Waldameer in Erie bridges over PA 8-suchandsuchwhoactuallycaresLOL and is called the Ravine Flyer II. I have never ridden any roller-coasters but I have been to Waldameer, and I have been under the coaster's bridge over PA 8-suchndsuchwhoactuallycaresLOL on the way to Presque Isle.

The whole point of rollercoasters is intense curves at high speeds..etc the difference is its bolted to a track on at least 3 sides of the rail.

Toll roads should be an admission fee, just like amusement parks. Charge say $5 or $10 for entrance to the jersey turnpike regardless of how far you take it. Charge $20 or $30 to enter the Penn turnpike regardless of distance traveled.

Nitro
El Toro (Malfunctioned 2x in a year, not sure I will trust it again)
Intimidator (at carowinds, not I-305)
Superman - New England
Expedition Everest - Disney
Space Mountain
Thundermountain Railway
Coney Island Cyclone
Other wooden ones-forgot the names
Fury 325

Wanted to go on Candymonium and Skyrush at Hershey Park when I was in Palmyra PA this month, but they were both closed due to them putting stupid lights up or something for "transition into the holiday season". Etc or some BS like that.

Noooooooooooooooooo no no no no no no noooooooooooooo! The person who drives seven miles on the turnpike should not have to pay the same amount as the person who drives 160 miles on the turnpike!

Trouble is for the rollercoaster operator is that there is thing called net profit that needed to keep operations going.  Or am I edging you towards some sort of bizarre rant on how you think economics should be?

If it meant I wouldn't have to shell out $100 or $200 any time I drove the whole length or close to it, definitely. And if people are only going 1 exit they probably don't even have to use the turnpike in the first place. Those people are adding to the traffic long distance drivers have to endure, so it's not unfair they have to pay slightly more than per mile/per exit. They would save a ton on any long distance trip and the state may net just as much money anyway.

You people really need to get on this ride, I've been on other hypercoasters that got boring after 4-5 rides, but this one took a good 60-70 times before it got boring. My main reason for going to South Carolina was to go on this rollercoaster.

The Super Dooper Looper and Comet at Hersheypark have both provided relatives and friends of mine with infamous moments. My dad and brothers got stuck at the end of the Looper (my mom and I had sat it out after riding it once, but they couldn't stop riding it that day), and one of my classmates told me a story about throwing up after riding the Comet once.

The best ones don't go upside down. Ones over 200 feet usually don't have inversions. Loops are the Pennsylvania Turnpike of rides for me.

How are we supposed to take your rankings as unbiased if your criterion is so narrow?  Doesn't the not just make you a "paper expert"  on rollercoasters?  To me it just sounds as though you can't get out of comfort zone with rollercoasters just as you can't with roads.

My favorite coaster is Millennium Force at Cedar Point. CP is Nirvana for coaster enthusiasts. King's Island near Cincinnati is also a great coaster park with the Beast being the main attraction. I also like Six Flags St Louis, having lived there for almost three decades; The Boss is great and has almost a mile of track. Disney is more about theming and family fun than coasters but Test Track at Epcot - while not technically a coaster - is great fun.

I don't go on upside down rides.
Not sure that your opinion on roller coasters is well-founded, then.

Yeah, I guess my totally biased and unfounded opinions are why Fury325 won the International Golden Ticket Awards 6 times in a row after it opened.

So your opinions on rollercoasters are just of the populist variety?

No, just of the unscientific survey variety

My favorite coaster is Millennium Force at Cedar Point. CP is Nirvana for coaster enthusiasts. King's Island near Cincinnati is also a great coaster park with the Beast being the main attraction. I also like Six Flags St Louis, having lived there for almost three decades; The Boss is great and has almost a mile of track. Disney is more about theming and family fun than coasters but Test Track at Epcot - while not technically a coaster - is great fun.

Haven't been on that yet but that's a great choice for a favorite. I was considering going there for my trip instead of carowinds but since Fury325 was taller, faster, steeper, and longer I figured it would be slightly better and I was right! I read top thrill dragster is shut down permanently after multiple malfunctions.

Top Thrill Dragster was actually a bit of a bore, especially if you've been on other instant-start coasters. I rode it once and never again bothered. There are several better coasters at Cedar Point.

Same with Kingda ka. There's a reason those two never make into even the top 20 despite breaking height/speed records.

At this point, your experience is so limited that  your opinion has no broad application.

A healthier perspective for you would be: "I really liked Fury 325 and look forward to riding more costers to see if the rankings are right.  Someday, I'll start going upside-down..."

I mean, my son loved Gemini at Cedar Point and rode it a bunch of times (great coaster), but he's not so naive to say it's the absolute best one in the world, since he knows there are a ton he hasn't ridden.

I used to like the effects of Chaos, at the long defunct Opryland In Nashville.  Not a thrill ride but neat effects that created thrill.

Maybe not what the OP was looking for as I said it on my own experience and not what a Rollercoaster mag rates it, but I remember this experience well. 😂

Quite frankly there aren't any rides with better specs. All the rides with higher height and speed specs are launched and last around 30 seconds.

As shown in this video even the most popular coaster enthusiasts who have ridden thousands of coasters throughout the world think this is the best one.

If you're talking about Superman: Tower of Power, that is not a coaster per say, it's a 325-ft tall launched tower.

My favorite coaster is the Titan at that same park.  The Titan combines the gliding sensation in the first three drops and G-forces in the pair of helixes.

We'll see. As I said I get bored with most rollercoasters after 4-5 times riding it, but this one I literally rode for 12 hours straight and it was still fun by the end of the day. By the 2nd day of the trip it got a little boring. Line pass was worth the money for this one.

Fury 325 is awesome, my second favorite coaster I've been on. For a totally different take on the giga coaster concept, try Intimidator 305 at Kings Dominion, focuses on positive Gs and quick transitions instead of larger elements and airtime (it's #4 in my rankings). My favorite is Steel Vengeance at Cedar Point.

Steel Vengeance is a great coaster.  Love RMCs, myself.  Wicked Cyclone at Six Flags New England is an incredible conversion of the old classic Cyclone, with neat hang time elements.  My father and brother didn't like the lap/ankle harness, though.

Probably because I refuse to go upside down ones which limits my choices alot. I wonder why people want those elements anyway. Being upside down is disorienting and unpleasant compared to other extreme elements. And that's not just me btw, many people are afraid of looping rides specifically but not ohmther massive coasters, or at least find that circular motion more sickening than thrilling. Do you even feel like you are upside down on looping rollercoasters?

Depends on the shape of the loop I guess. If the centripetal force is strong enough you would feel like you are sitting upright, but if it the loop is taken more slowly, you will get "hang time", dangling there and feel like you are actually flipping over. It's not the fear of falling out for me, it is just the sickening motion.

The Sidewinder in Hersheypark is one you feel the force of gravity on you while looping in reverse.

You're rationalizing your own fears by an inaccurate perception of coasters' popularity.

It's okay to afraid of them in your own right.

I thought of a great thrill ride. A virtual rollercoaster that has these electromagnetic helicopters that try to pick you off the track as the rollercoaster simulates a runaway tractor trailer running wild.  Then to add to it your virtual ride comes equipped with a graphing hook so you stop the ride at anytime.

How's that for a coaster.  Better than the Penn Turnpike.

I remember Rolling Thunder, back before it was removed from Six Flags Great America.  It had bobsled sections, wherein the cars slid along a chute rather than being on a track.

1st video really shows the insanity of the launch

2nd video, on ride footage is around 4:20, with speedometer and all.

This rollercoaster had to be closed due to a number of riders supposedly breaking bones during this insane launch. 112 mph in less than 1.6 seconds. And it's not like the riders are wearing G suits or anything.

I like the Sidewinder in Hersheypark. Short shuttle coaster, but a thrill for the back and forth through two loops and one twist.

Similar rides were in both Ocean City, MD and Wildwood, NJ that featured same exact layout.

Edit: Sidewinder now is renamed The Jolly Rancher Remix.

I’m guessing Jolly Rancher candies is now part of the great Hershey Chocolate Brands hence the latest name.

Heh.  Very common ride.  Every park worth its salt has one of these cheaply and mass manufactured rides.

Weird thing is the enthusiast community looks down on them because of how common they are.  If people enjoy them, I don't see the problem.
